Why are most of the worst games I've ever played ones that were recommended by /vr/?

>> No.5462778

Holy Christ, THANK you, OP. I was beginning to think I was the only one who didn't like that insipid heap.

With JRPGs it goes like
>BEST GAME EVER MADE
>EXTREMELY UNDERRATED
>HIDDEN GEM
Which means the only ones you should play are the ones called "best game ever made", because there's a 90% chance everything else is crap.

>> No.5462820

>>5462814
What about games like Xenosaga II which are universally agreed to be a turd?

>> No.5462825

>>5462820
Always read why it is called a turd. Some games are called a turd because JRPG fans are way too engrained in tradition to appreciate different games.

e.g. people call FFXII one of the worst Final Fantasies because it doesn't play like the earlier games, but to me it was one of the most fun, speaking purely from a gameplay point of view.

>> No.5462826

Because vr is completely contrarian; they hate what everyone likes because of its popularity, and pretend that they like what is otherwise universally agreed to be bad

Why is your taste such shit?

>> No.5462846

>>5462775
Because you're a zoomer at heart and would rather play Fortnite; the only old games you enjoy are the ones you already know and can apply nostalgia glasses to

It's nothing to feel embarrassed about, OP. You're just conditioned by the modern game industry's standards.

and it depresses me out how common this is on /vr/ now. Fuck it, to stay on topic, Threads of Fate is kinda flawed but I found it to be enjoyable, some of the music is great, I like Rue as a character, and his monster transformation mechanic was fun.

>> No.5463140

>>5462775
it's actually because games age. in some cases (pretty often) they aren't so good in modern day with aged janky gameplay, old design and horrible controls.
so if you haven't played them when you were young, you don't have any nostalgic bond with them, thus they don't have anything to offer for you simply because there's many modern games that does the same thing but better. that simple.

I'm talking JRPGs, retard. Go and browse the Internet, nearly every pre-PS3 era JRPG that was officially localized/received a fan translation is considered either great, underrated, or a hidden gem.

And I don't mean "well King's Field IV is actually great because people dislike it for not being like other JRPGs", but rather "this entirely mediocre game is called great because it has turn-based combat and an animu plot".

>> No.5463156

>>5463114
Pro tip: every single game no matter how generally disliked has at least few fans who liked it. If you're too stupid to do your own research and think for yourself it's your problem and no one else's.

thanks to /vr/, I found out about Echo NIght 1 and 2 and Macross VFX-2. they were great. nobody recommended shit games yet.

I wanna say Battle Hunter but even this incredibly low-budget poor shit game was actually rather fun despite its obvious flaws.
Book of Watermarks seems boring and tough to get into but nobody actually recommended it.

Only good games so far. Keep going with that, /vr/.

Shit, I never thought of games /vr/ recommended to me.

Well, I saw a thread for Battle Mania/Trouble Shooters around a year ago, and that was fucking great. I loved that game and it's sequel. It felt like a Panty and Stocking Shmump, and had a great Mega Drive esque OST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7elpxsW68SU

Technically, an image I saw on /vr/ back in 2013 or so, made me want to try Phantasy Star 1 and I gave it a try a few years later. Bit rough around the edges and a quite outdated, but I really liked it as well. Finished it last year after a lot of trial and error.

I haven't really listened to a lot of /vr/'s suggestions, but so far the ones I picked up on haven't been awful.
