Give it to me straight, /vr/. How is this game? I have heard nothing but bad things about it but it looks like it would be a lot of fun and I don't really have a problem with grinding. Jarpig hating "zoomers" stay out.

couldn't tell you anon. I got bored and gave up on it when I played as a kid, and every time I've tried to play since then I've never stuck with it for more than 10 minutes.

I don't remember anything specifically being wrong with it, just that it didn't have anything really engaging or memorable about it apart from the way you interact with the different characters you could have chosen as your protag as you play.

That's the same experience I had with it too. I've tried playing it at least four or five times and only spent about ten minutes fighting monsters before I turned it off. I've never made it far enough to have an opinion on it and I was just wondering if anyone here ever actually played it.

It’s ok, and definitely not something to miss out on, but more as a curiosity than a necessity.

I only played through once with Lux and Esuna. I enjoyed it but it isn't for everyone.

It at least gives the impression of being an organic race-for-the-McGuffins style adventure where contestants are teaming up and backstabbing eachother left and right. Your pick of MC and who you decide to team up with can give you quite different experiences between playthroughs.

All that said, it's not great. At least it's way better than Mystic Ark.

The publisher broke the USA version.
It's actually not bad if you play the japanese original, or the patched western version that fixes all the mechanics and stats back to their original state.

It’s worth trying out cause it has some neat ideas. I love the radar encounter system, and I like the idea of teaming up with or fighting the characters you didn’t choose to play as. I think I remember hearing that your level caps about halfway through the game, which is something I love to see in jrpgs since it encourages strategy over simple grinding.

I don’t think it’s worth ‘trying’ to like it though, the game can be a real slog at parts. I think it deserves a look but don’t force yourself to play it unless you happen to be in the small group of people the game is fun to.

I dropped it after two hours. Interesting but not something I want to play through.

I normally hate LPs but I’ll use them for games I end up not liking but still feel curious about. If you drop the game like I did this one is thorough about the game’s history, mechanics, stuff players can miss, and most importantly is just on a forum and not some annoying video series.

It's not bad. It has an interesting aesthetic and pretty good music. Very light on the story though. The problem with the US release is that the when it was translated, they somehow completely fucked the stat growth up. When I was playing, I kept hitting walls when I'd enter a new area that would force me to grind levels to stay relevant. The stat growth thing is a major problem when it comes to meeting the other characters seeking the runes. You have to fight some of them and they scale to your level with unbroken stats so they can very nearly one shot you. You basically have to defend until they miss and then try to drop them in one hit. If you're going to play it, look for a rom hack that fixes the stat growth.

Nice, I'm glad to hear it actually was broken and not actually designed to be that way. I'll have to patch my rom and give it another shot sometime. I've always been really interested in playing it but after spending a little while grinding right outside the first time I had to turn it off knowing the rest of the game was probably going to be the same slog.

Also, that Saturn section needs a hell of an update.
No Devil Summoner/Soul Hackers, no Albert Odyssey, no good-grafix version of Grandia, Tengai Makyou 4, Sword & Sorcery (even though somehow the 3DO version might be better, and tons of TRPGs and DRPGs if you're including stuff like SMT and Dark Law.
