This. I have no idea what OP means with "influx of zoomers" in regards to Eva. That show has been popular in the West ever since the 90s and it's one of the most discussed anime series in existence (which doesn't make it the best or the worst quality wise but that's a different topic). It's like OP's been in a coma since 1995 and didn't wake up from it till a few days ago.

Besides, even if we were to assume that evangelion was 'niche' and would become 'too mainstream' or whatever bullshit hipsters or gatekeepers wanna tell themselves then what's the deal? It doesn't make the show itself worse and it's not like Gainax didn't milk the hell out of it in the 90s in japan already.

Anons I hate to break it to you but Evangelion is one of the most popular Anime's of all time. It's MANY peoples first foray into the genre and even Anno himself has admitted that it's imagery is all style and almost completely meaningless. Evangelion was just a very flashy show. There really wasn't anything in particular it was trying to say. All of the crosses and imagery were seriously just in there because it looked really cool. And it did look really cool. It's probably one of the best style over substance shows out there. Beyond that it's a pretty typical coming of age plotline like many other popular shows. Have you not read any of Anno's commentary about it's imagery? He has explained many times it's pretty meaningless and he just thought all of it looked really cool and he wanted to make something interesting. But as someone who watches and enjoys anime of people who watch anime Evangelion is DEFINITELY one most of those types of people have seen. Like I said it's right up there with Sailor Moon/DBZ/Yu Yu Hakusho and the likes. It's extremely popular.

It's just a coming of age show man. It even has the typical character archetypes. An immature boy, a spicy redhead, an aloof apathetic girl, an absent father and a method for the main character to prove themselves. It's a very typical storyline in anime that resonates really well with teenagers and young adults. There's nothing deep about it and there's really nothing wrong with that.
