GameCube is actually more "retro" than Dreamcast.

Dreamcast:
>Bundled with a modem like Xbox
>Seganet with online subscription service
>Lots of DLC

GameCube:
>Plug and play, just like N64

But, thats wrong you idiot.

Retro is a function of time and culture, not of performance or functionality.

Yes, and retro is defined as anything beyond 15 years old. 30 is vintage, 50 or more is typically antique.

>Nintendon't STILL failed to include online play in a generation where literally every other competitor had it
>i-i-it w-was p-plug and p-play, totally retro!

Nintendo dropping the ball and selling a shit console without a feature that was considered a market standard at the time doesn't make the GC retro.

>> No.5453190

>>5453186
Wrong.

Vintage and Antique have defined dates. Retro is usually fairly recent.

>> No.5453193

>>5453186
Nigga, antiques are 100 years old or more. You can't get fucking "antiques" from 1950.

>considered market standard

What?

Dreamcast was bleeding fucking edge and even PS2 scrambled with modem and network. Xbox was the only one to really do it.

Dreamcast and Xbox paved the way to DLC and online gaming.

PS2 fumbled but scrapped together some online stuff.

GameCube sat barren like it's N64 predecessor. The only distinction is it had better graphics. It is just an upgraded 5th gen console. Dreamcast and Xbox were the industry leaders for technology and features of what became modern gaming, yet Dreamcast is discussed actively on here but GameCube isn't.

2001 is retro if 1999 is retro.

They're arbitrary terms, so all we have is our definition of what modern consoles do that retro consoles dont'.

Dreamcast and Xbox do what modern consoles do.

You could still buy an ethernet adaptor for the Cube.

>Seganet with online subscription service
An optional service, most people just used their own ISP instead.

>Lots of DLC
Gamecube still has 1 game that has DLC, a Konami baseball game.

Sorry OP, your argument failed. GCN is just as modern as the rest of 6th gen, even if its online sucked compared to the others.

>> No.5453234

Everybody here knows but pretends not to, but the fact that Dreamcast is considered retro and PS2, Xbox and Game Cube aren't just because of a simple detail is pretty fucking stupid.

Not happening, dumb nigger.

Automobiles in my state are "Antique" after 30 years. They are "Classic" after 20.

The remaining 6th generation consoles are older now then the Dreamcast was when it was allowed as a discussion point.

With the Release of the Xbox One-X & PS4 Pro, The entire 6th generation of gaming consoles, and DirectX9/Windows Xp software should be included as acceptable discussions within the retro forum.

I didn't know you could drive video game consoles.
Oh wait you can't and they're all completely different things with different standards for nomenclature.
You aren't gonna be discussing halo here despite how much you want to.

Let's go back to banning the Dreamcast then, if it'll shut you whiny zoomers up.

Was SegaNet a pay service? I actually bought a Dreamcast on 9/9/99 and I never once had to pay for an online service to play games online. I connected to the net through my own ISP. And I use to play games like Daytona USA 2001 and Phantasy Star Online for free.

>>Lots of DLC

Not really. DLC was pretty limited to small things like seasonal themes for Sonic Adventure and such. The Dreamcast didn't have a hard drive, so storage was really limited on those VMU's.

I guess the Sega Saturn is less retro than the Nintendo GameCube too... r.

>> No.5453272

If you're going to be so retardedly reductive, you may as well call the Dreamcast a proto Wii u because of the vmu.

I bet you also didn't know that video game consoles can be a manufactured product from an earlier period.

The PS2 is older now than the N64 was when /vr/ started, yet the N64 was allowed from the beginning. Think about that.

There are 25 games total for the Dreamcast that have DLC, you can download them all here:

http://www.dreamcastlive.net/dlc.html

All DLC packs combined equal to 2.7MB total.

i just dont want 6th gen because i think 6th gen sucks.
there are some good games for sure, but i think 6th gen is where contemporary mainstream game design was really fleshed out.

I'd rather play a contemporary brown FPS that at least looks good than some ugly 2004 brown FPS.

OK. Well OP The Gamecube is not retro. Therefore this thread breaks the offtopic rule
