Now that the dust has settled, what is objectively the best Mario game of all time?

How the fuck is SML2 not retro? Game Boy released in fucking 1989.

Oh no, I meant that the objective best Mario game of all time is not retro.

It's a fucking color hack from 2018 it is NOT retro

>> No.5443334

I used to say it was SMB3 but I've grown to appreciate SMB1 more over time. It's actually a decent challenge, and coins and lives actually matter. I don't think it gets enough credit for being such a well designed game, despite its legacy.

I really admire how 1 is designed from just a handful of elements steadily increasing challenge by recombination. It's a great game, but some aspects of the handling and a couple of said design elements are now really obtuse.

SMB3 on the contrary feels very modern and solid in comparison; more than 30 years again barely nothing about it feels outdated or primitive. If you want to go for a somewhat more challenging experience, try the original version. The western release kind of fucked up tinkering with the powerup system

I usually play the Japanese version, but the amount of lives the game throws at you is still really excessive. And there are just too many auto-scrolling levels. And the bosses aren't good. It used to be my favorite game of all time but I think I've just played it too much and now the flaws are just too apparent.

>there are just too many auto-scrolling levels
I don't think there are too many autoscroll levels, but I do really fucking hate the "puzzle" levels. They're so obtuse and frustrating.

Super Mario World.
3D Mario is when it went downhill for me.

Yes. The game isn't throwing out 1-ups left and right like every other Mario game so collecting coins actually has a purpose, especially because the game gets properly challenging by the end. With a well balanced difficulty curve.

>aspects of the handling
this is one of the reasons why I like SMB1 a lot, the following games give you way too much air control, in 1 it really seems like you "earn" your jumps and you have to really be careful about when using them

>> No.5444154

>>5444136
Not to mention that SMB1 was before they started handing out coins 50 at a time in each level.

>> No.5444329

Smw is easily the best game ever made. Perfect in every way so it has to be that

>> No.5444343

Too easy, both the cape and Yoshi and endless supply of coins and extra lives trivialize any challenge

it's a great game but not perfect

Super Mario Bros. 3

>> No.5444386

>>5444343
Agreed. Smb3 is better becuase its at least challenging. Smw is ass-easy and really just lets you walk/fly rite thru most levels with minimal effort. For me that equates to low replay value.

Hey buddy, ive seen a lot of retarded backseat modding today. You'd better hop on over to the /doom/ retro fps thread, those utter rule-breakers have been posting hacks and mods from 2019 non-stop!

Well, the boss thing sounds a little vague, but it's weird to call the auto-scrolls levels a "flaw". It might be just that you don't enjoy them as much as other levels, but that's hardly a mistake or oversight in the game's design. I see them as a sort of "test" of skills picked up elsewhere in the game with the added challenge of less freedom to set your own pace

About the extra lives and difficulty, the problem seems to be that, as you claim, you've played the game too much. It's certainly difficult to really screw up and get sent back to the beginning of a map ,but asking a game to provide a constant challenge for you after dozens or hundreds of replays seems a little unfair. There's no hurdle in SMB1 that remains as such after enough practice either
