Officially it is claimed that Sunsoft considered Mr. Gimmick too strange for American tastes, but it's more likely that NOA rejected the game for a US release as it was too similar to Kirby's Adventure, then in development.

It's good not great. It's not so generic that it doesn't add its own twist to the genre in having your own castle from which you warp around the world and having 108 characters to recruit (most of them just being palette changes, but some being pretty sweet finds,) there are hundreds of generic RPGs, this is one at least is a bit of a different experience.

Gimmick in Japanese is the buzzword name they give to little land marks or unique elements of the stages that only show up once. It has the opposite connotation of gimmick as it's used in English, usually denoting an uninteresting, underused and underdeveloped game mechanic

I bought this game based on the cover and back of the case alone. Anime wasn't as mainstream back then so this art style really caught my eye. The first anime I had saw (other than speed racer or dragonball z was in around 1995 on cartoon network. They had a late night show called "Japanimation" or something similar. I would have been 15 at the time. I remember watching robot carnival and thought it was really cool. When I saw Musashi a few years later, I bought it at full price, didn't even wait for "greatest hits."

To be fair, if you had played SF1, this was an instabuy. Also, I recall it being heavily featured in game magazines of the time. Still kind of shitty cover art, but it gives me nostalgia.

Armadillo isn't as good of a game as Mr. Gimmick; short levels with not a huge amount of content, but it is also quite Kirby-like and Nintendo probably also stole some ideas from it.

There's quite a few cancelled North American NES releases. With at least some of these, we can take a guess why they got the axe. For example, SimCity is presumed to have not been released to avoid competing with the SNES SimCity.

Napoleon Senki probably didn't get released because it used a weird Irem cartridge banking scheme consisting of four TTLs (the cartridge used both CHR RAM and ROM) and this would have cost too much to certify for use in NES cartridges, which is the main reason why third party mappers weren't used in NES cartridges other than Batman Returns.

Final Fantasy II was obviously cancelled due to the cost of the bigger ROMs needed for English dialog, which is also why FF3 never made it here.

California Raisins I have absolutely no idea.

>California Raisins I have absolutely no idea.
Cancelled because the CR fad had run its course by 1990 and projected game sales were low. Robocop vs Terminator was cancelled to avoid stealing sales from the SNES version.

This was made by Virgin and the project supervisor was the guy who handled MC Kids. He said that Virgin had dropped NES support by 1993 and the game was also made by an inexperienced team and didn't come out very well.

I guess a lot hinges on what they meant by Japan receiving limited quantities. Perhaps they had the game nearly done, sent prototype carts out to retailers to demo and gauge interest when deciding on initial production runs, and found indications that it was going to be a hit, prompting the start on an American localization. I don't know what production lead times were back then, but I would have to imagine that the development of the US version had to have started before the JP retail release if both were released the same month.

>> No.5445276

They didn't really change anything with the US MM1 other than the title screen and copyright notices, but it would still take a couple of months to get a production run of cartridges made and shipped.

Ironically, MM1 was not a hit either in the US or Japan and ended up on the bargain rack in stores within three months. Kitamura had to convince reluctant Capcom execs to approve a sequel.
