Curious, do the Japanese releases maintain English text in them? I've seen screens of some of the Japanese versions that look rad as fuck and wanted to check them out, but I cant read gorious nippon.

Yes. All Japanese versions of 1-5 except the PCE-CD have a language option.
The later releases have some Japanese text for things that weren't originally written like spell descriptions. There is a retranslation patch for the Windows and SFC versions.

It's a shame that the PC booter versions have such a nasty reputation. I picked up physical copies of the first four games and I really like that's the same boxes, same manuals, and just a sticker on the box saying what version of the game it is. The interface is clean and the graphics look pretty good via Hercules graphics on a monochrome monitor, which I wasn't expecting. But by all accounts the RNG is fucked. I'd be down to try and do some sort of code decompilation or something if someone recommended some tools. I want to know just how bad the mechanics have changed, especially because the Apple II source code is supossedly available.

I also grabbed a copy of Wizardry 8 from a book store while I was traveling last weekend. Then I remembered playing it on a demo disk from PC Gamer, then I looked at the release date, and then I realized they really -have- been gone that long. Meanwhile, Japan refuses to let the franchise die.
