As a kid when these first came out, Tamagotchi were way more interesting and fun compared to digimon (and most other vpets that came out in the US were trash compared to those two) but as time went on, Tamas didn't grow all that much in terms of design while Digimon knocked it out of the park. The stuff they're still releasing today especially is fantastic.

>> No.5428957

My sister tried to be a cool aunt and gave our cousins the tamagotchi and they had no idea what to do with it.

I don't blame them though, they don't really make sense nowadays when pet simulators are common on mobiles and much better. It's the ultimate boomer toy. The cousin is perfectly content with The Sims 1 game I had installed for her on grandma's old PC.

>boomer
Boomers didn't play these. Gen-X is the earliest generation to have them as kids, and even then they would've mostly been high school age at the time, so generally it'd be millenials.

I had one of these when they first came out but I was pretty young and didn't know how they worked. My digimon died and I cried to my parents, so they took it in thinking the device had literally died. The guy at the store had to explain it to them.

The thing I remember about the first digimon, and maybe it was an off-brand thing, but the fact was that the ones my friend and I had, the one who would win in fights was always the one that was "older," aka, started first. We tried to restart ours eventually to see if we could get something more balanced by starting at the same time, but I must have been slightly faster because mine ended up winning every time and so we got bored of them pretty quick.

Being a fan of the digital pets, I really have a hard time connecting with other fans, because they all like the retarded cartoon or the video games which, while I did play one that was okay, it didn't represent the vpet experience at all.

Also, the games/vpets all changing what evolves into what from game to game is extremely confusing to younger me and made it harder to latch onto than something like pokemon where things are consistent from game to game, even if later stuff adds onto what exists, it doesn't completely change the chart.

no joke my unemployed deadbeat dad tried to make money selling those things back in like 1999. i haven't spoken to him in 15 years now.

The one I played was a pretty good, basic experience. It's been discontinued now, though, and the app no longer runs.

>>5429105
Doooo some research before dropping any cash. Especially for Tamas because they can be wildly different to each other. And the older ones might be super boring to you because there isn't a lot of interaction, it's just a toy that occasionally beeps and you need to respond and not really a game experience.

Somebody post the Tarakotchi gif dance.
I used to have one back in the day, even asked my mom to wake me up if the damn thing was crying in the middle of the night, of course i grow tired of it and let it die, took the battery and used on my school bag until it was stolen back in the day. I was thinking of getting one since now days i only sleep for like four hours, any of this models are good?

If you set the clock correctly, they never should wake you at night.

The Tamagotchi Connection is the only one other than the original I had out of this list (the US release one, not the earlier one that was renamed in America) and it was really good. The problem you might find here is that a lot of these either require friends with their own tamas to interact with, or websites that are long since closed down. The 4U does sound pretty interesting, but I'm a weirdo who isn't as into the color screen vpets.

I remember having one of those along with Tamagotchi Angel. There was also a dog pet I had along with a rancor digital pet which had a minigame that allowed you to feed it jedi.

pretty sure that's the same artist that does a bunch of touhou doujin and did a commercial manga called something like "Don't become an otaku, Shinozaki!" I haven't seen this particular one before, though.

I never had a Tamagotchi, but I had a giga pet. The rugrats one. It was pretty neat. Later on I got a digivice and love it. I wanted to pick one up again, but man some of them go for pretty high prices.

Bandai recently re-released the original tamagotchi with some new colours. I think they're doing the same with the original digimon soon.

>some of them go for pretty high prices.

Digimon prices are insane. Scalpers are crazy. And the new ones need to be imported and are released in limited numbers, so you're paying either way.

Even more idiocy, this is why /vr/ is full of people sniping each other for (You)s rather than discussing the games.

This is a pretty good site to find images of digimon from the vpets. It's fairly thorough with things like different attacks and other incidentals in addition to the digimon themselves.

>>5430131
That's too bad because the originals are pretty boring. The 20th anniversary stuff Bandai's been doing for the digimon vpets have been pretty good, adding new stuff and fixing things while still being in the older style. The pendulum in particular was great I thought.

>> No.5430456

>>5428979
I had the terracotta design one.
>>5428989
That was my experience as well. I wanted to play with it more, but so much of the original's growth was locked behind winning battles and my friend didn't stay interested long enough to get a fair/balanced reset for competition. since they could only fight at rookie and up, and I only ever got numemon or meramon (which didn't evolve further?) it was always who reached the adult stage first.

>> No.5430463

>>5430456
That's definitely something they fixed later on. I particularly like the pendulum just because it makes it sort of a skill thing to get a "good" result and it's not necessarily shaking it the hardest or fastest. Depending on the version you want a good rhythm and each digimon has a different ideal # of shakes for a megahit.
