She is. I know that FF6 is different than other FF's in the way it jumps around with character focus, but a majority of the story revolves around her, her powers, and what she is. The World of Ruin is effectively the end of the story, your only real goal from the start of it is to defeat kefka and aside from Celes, Edgar, and Setzer, everything else you do in it is optional and to complete the personal stories of each character. Even then, if you beat the game without recruiting Terra, she drops in at the end to guide whoever you have out of Kefka's tower.

Some people like them, some people don't. It's a very different approach to gameplay revolving more around setting things up and executing commands than it is about building skill and timing. Though if you're going to try Final Fantasy out i'd suggest starting with 6 and then branching out from there since the games are not connected at all. 6 tends to be the most newbie friendly of the games, faster paced, easier, and a very wide range of characters to enjoy both battle and story wise. From my experience, people who generally don't like JRPG's tend to enjoy ff6, at least those who i've convinced to try or have shown it to.

To be honest, I'm decidedly a Western RPG fan - but I think that trying something outside of someone's comfort zone can be fun.
The only FF game I ever played for more than few minutes was I think FF4 on a SNES emulator and FF13 way back in the day, from what I understand the worst FF game there is. Suprisingly, I didn't hate it.
But I guess, I didn't really have a reference point.

I was actually thinking about playing 6,8 or 10. I guess most will try to sell me on FF 7 - but I want to try something less obvious first.

13's a perfectly good game it's just that people hear the word "linear" and immediately write it off without understanding what the devs were going for. The whole franchise is ranges from decent to excellent, and the only way you can really judge each game is to play it for yourself and form your own opinion, as reviews are completely untrustworthy (each title is either "the best ff" or "shit" in the eyes of the incredibly awful fanbase).

Honestly in ff6 Terra, Loce, and Celes could all qualify as taking on the 'protagonist' role at different points. At one point the focus goes to Sabin, and some make the case for Setzer and Edgar later in the game too since they are the other two needed to get into Kefka's tower.

FF6 is unique among the FF games when it comes to a 'main' character. And i kind of like how the spotlight is shared.
