The GBCamera is a lot more fun when you're working with a decent screen. Here's everything I know.
These days, I use a GB Pocket with a backlight I bought from Handheld Legends. I like this solution because you keep the original LCD. Because you have to remove the back reflector, there is a little bit of tradeoff in direct sunlight... but IMO it's totally fine. More info about the mod here. (I have not attempted biversion)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0PlML-q4Lo
If you actually want to mod your Pocket, here's a great way to not destroy your LCD (which you will if you're not careful)
https://imgur.com/a/TeWMN
I used to use a "CartWheel" (see attatched pic). It lets you use your GBCamera with the SP's awesome screen in the correct orientation. It works great, but you can't take selfies while looking at the screen... lame. Plus it looks insane. It's already embarrassing to use the GBCamera in public and the CartWheel only exacerbates the situation. The Pocket is much classier & easier to explain. Anyway, check it out.
https://gameboyphoto.bigcartel.com/product/cartwheel-with-case
This is not a product I have tried, but BennVenn is selling a beautiful no-solder LCD kit for the GBC. This is a new mod on the GBC scene, up until now people used GBA SP screens in their GBCs... yuck. BennVenn claims the price will go down later so keep an eye out if it interests you.
https://bennvenn.myshopify.com/collections/aftermarket-lcds/products/backlit-gbc-drop-in-lcd-kit-pre-orders
and for those of you content with no backlit screen... I salute you. but life could be better.

do you want to play game boy games? Do you care about not being able to play color-only games, do you care about it weighing more due to size/batteries, do you care about the pea soup green screen?

I have one in addition to several other GB models, but only because I love the GB and that one is a novelty. It's enjoyable to me to see what games would have looked like when you played them in the pre-pocket days, especially given the DMG has a pretty blurry screen compared to the pocket (and especially to later models which basically removed glare).

I'd say if you have no other GB and want one, and if it's cheap for you to buy it, then buy it. Else, look for another model, like the pocket, the color, the advance sp, the light, etc.

The GBP backlight mod is maybe not the most "authentic" solution in terms of the retro experience, but not only is the genuine Light's backlight much dimmer than the mod kit, it's also way more expensive. In my opinion, the backlight mod is respectful to the console because you keep the original LCD-- the only change is swapping the reflective backing for a backlight. I don't think aftermarket LCDs exist for the Pocket anyway.
At least I didn't gut & dremel the case and put a rasp pi in there-- now that is disrespectful, especially since ebay is brimming with aftermarket Gameboy shells that no one would ever miss.

You get the idea.

They won't revolutionize the way you take pictures, but they're cheap as hell (4 Dorrars via AliExpress). So go ahead and get them if you like to toy around a little.

Warning: the lenses don't automatically "snap" into a perfect centralized position and require some shifting around for a good shot. You'll also get a vignette effect.

I could take some illustrative shots the next days.

This new year's eve I tried taking some pics of the fireworks, just as a proof of concept. I wasn't even sure if anything would show up under the miserable lighting conditions, but I was far from disappointed with the results.

My setup could have been somewhat better - I was far away from the fireworks, was shooting through a window and other buildings were obstructing large parts of the sky. On tops I had few empty slots left as I was taking pictures with friends all night. Next year I want to see what I can do with an empty camera, close to the action with an unobstructed view. Maybe throw in the fisheye lens for good measure.

No worries, most of my shots also end up looking like shit. I'm just very selective about the ones I keep and even more so about the ones I share.

If your technical solution for ripping the pictures gives you only straight BMPs and no ROM/SRAM file for retroarch, you can still apply a filter. Just load the image file in retroarch and apply your configured lcd shader (or any filter, really - go wild!). Not sure if this will give you the exact same result as the "emulation" route, but it's impossible to achieve 100% accuracy anyway.

Somebody could, in theory. You'd have to squeeze a storage medium and a microcontroller in the cartridge. It wound up going to Goodwill down the line when I lost interest in it and I don't know if there were any photos of it still on there as it was taken from my room by my mom when I was at school. So someone not only picked up a rare find for cheap enough that it would make me sick, but also child pornography as I was 14 at the time.

There's a number of ways to do it. I think a lot of folks simply dump the SRAM from their carts, easily via a dumper, or more complicatedly using bizarre methods like using an N64 EverDrive and GB Xfer pack, or using a USB GB Smart Card and a Mega Memory Card. There's also two pre built GB Printer Emulators available that 'print' BMPs to an SD card; the printer emulators give you the borders, while dumping the SRAM would require you to add in the borders after the fact, if that's something you care about.
