Daikatana had a "SaveGem" pickup that you had to use to save your game, and they were limited to 2-3 per level (mostly in secrets).
It was very heavily and justly bashed for it both by critics and the Doom/Quake community at the time, and since then it is considered to be a stupid idea more befitted of console games that has no place on PC.

Having an option and not using it out of your own volition is better than not having an option at all.
In Daikatana it was compounded by some BS designs and numerous instant-death possibilities.
IonStorm themselves patched the savegame limit out later.

No matter the reasoning, doing something a retro game was blasted for, in a retro inspired game is not a good decision.

So, about Wrath trailer and gameplay video.

Stylish, probably more HeXen 1 and in line with what Hecatomb could've probably end up being, than HeXen 2. Not that memorable in monster designs though, so far. Interesting looking combat, although I can just see it devolving in some slaughtershit further on.

That having been said, layouting in the particular map that was shown on the gameplay video SUCKS MAJOR ASS. If this was done by someone with actual mapping experience - as the visuals seem to indicate - I can fucking bet it was some speedmapping communitycuck or AD-suckup. Can't they just hire Sandy or something? Because what they are currently moving towards is Painkiller demake.

It's not about linearity, it's about predictability. It's bunch of simple rooms, each having like three times as much space as you truly need, slapped together with some zombies invading them, environment-dressed so that to look pretty. The intended gameplay is literally lowest common denominator. There is no thought whatsoever meant to be involved on the player's side. I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed.

The Original Evil Dead movie was made on a budget of about $350,000, approximately 900k adjusting for inflation, and became an instant classic horror film made by a largely unknown filmmaker and unknown actors at the time while utilizing traditional film effects that still look good to this day.

This easily has a larger budget, larger names attached both in terms of producers, writers, and actors, and will fail hilariously with terrible dialog, acting, and poor visual effects that I'm sure will be dated CGI and look terrible to begin with, only progressively looking worse over time.

Not to mention Evil Dead even got a damned theater release. I'll be surprised if this actually does.

Doom EASILY has the source material to become a thriller/dark comedy on par with the original Evil Dead and it's sequels, a thing that also inspired some aspects the original fucking game.

Final Doom is definedly worth it. Later half of Evilution has some quite dated gameplay as in both gameplay and visuals. Maps are still better than in vanilla Doom 2 though. But the Plutonia is the real reason to buy Final Doom. The gameplay still feels fresh and challenging. And it's challenging in a good way, as there is no artificial difficulty or slaughter maps. Map32 is quite a slaughter map though, but I still find it fun even though I don't like slaughter maps. It's visuals still look great and the new texture pack is quite nice with it's jungle theme. It's real classic, and imo the best of official Doom releases.

There are people who do their own thing, end up influencing those around them, depending on how many people they managed to influence, they might establish a certain movement, a "school" of level-design of sorts. Point in case: Allen Blum, who pretty much established how "proper" Duke Nukem 3D map should look and feel like. Then there are people who explicitly join already established movements/schools, and vehemently practice acting like someone else (the person who founded the "school") would. Then there are people who aim at establishing their own movements, but are frauds and plagiarists, who actually know about what they are doing way less than they pretend to, and present their quote/memespeak as their genuine mapping style - but get a pass as long as it looks superficially cool or sophisticated. Then there are complete braindead retards, who produce mapping equivalents of child's scribbles (they could waste 2 hours or 200 hours on a single map, doesn't matter, it will still be incoherent barely playable mess), and, at the end of the day, are hopelessly clumsy and tone-deaf.

I've received this critique in the past, but I honestly don't know what to make of it. The weapons are quite a bit more different from one another than they are in vanilla heretic, and I recently removed the tracers and made them a non-default option. q2 and q3 movement values are mostly the same (ground friction 6, air acceleration 1, max air speed 320)
the biggest difference is in how they handle z velocity when jumping off ramps, and when you already have a velocity. q2 adds to your z veloicty when jumping and has you jump higher when moving up a ramp (same as q1 actually, hut q1 has no midair step height so you can't really double jump in that game), while q3 sets your z velocity to your jump velocity, removing the ability to do double jumps and ramp jumps (for height anyway)

Is there such a thing as too many secrets? There's SO many secrets in some of the Arcane Dimensions maps that it feels like they're the primary focus. You can beat maps with tens or even hundreds of enemies left alive if you miss the secrets. So you finish the map yet you don't feel like you ACTUALLY finished it, you need to go back and search carefully. I've heard people complain about Ion Maiden having too many as well.

Single Shotgun and Nailgun for weaker enemies depending on the ammo type to conserve, Super Shotgun for point-blank death dealing, Super Nailgun for rapid fire mincemeat of something you need dead really fast, Grenade Launcher for enemies with tricky positions, Rocket Launcher for targets that aren't too close and need to die hard, and Lightning Gun for deathdeathdeath.

The "upgrades" do better damage output at the cost of being more situational, risky, or in the Super Nailgun's case, ammo hogs. The weaker versions remain in your selection because every gun has its uses. About the closest to an outright replacement is the Super Shotgun, and only because Quake's levels aren't that open so you'll get more bang for your buck usually popping at enemies with the Super than with the Single, but Single still has range advantages.

The five greatest maps in Ultimate Doom:

E4M6: This is the best easily, a great reimagination of E4M2, which was kinda cramped and annoying (yet, still the second best in episode 4). Love the map's puzzle style progression and the hyde and seek with the cyb, I expect Sigil to be something like this.

E1M3: Legendary level with introducing the pinky (and the shotgunner on lower skills), full of interesting secrets, and great layout overall.

E2M2: Not a huge fan of Hall/Petersen, but this deserves credit for being so utterling fun. The crate maze was done very well, and the rest of the map is full of exploration.

E1M7: Complex layout, lot's of nonlinear areas, actually the meaty epitome of episode 1. Not much else to say, it's just fun.

E2M6: Petersen did a real horrific level, which I hated as a kid, but love now, for being very characteristic. The dark hallways and the fake exit all added to the map's psychedelic feel.

I think it comes from the fact that most mapmakers design their maps with UV in mind, as if it's the way to play the map that the designer intended. I believe Romero said this; correct me if I'm wrong. For the other difficulty levels, the designers just toggle things on and off, such as less monsters and more/special pickups only being available depending on the difficulty, such as more health pickups on lower difficulties for example or something like that.

In reality though, UV isn't "too" bad all things considered, except for poorly designed maps.

Sigil will be released to download, when boxes should arrive to their owners, some day on April. It's 100% same Sigil wad than the boxed one, but without the Buckethead music. I'd expect download to be in Sigil website, but who knows if Romero will upload it to Doomworld. Maps themselves require only a limit removing source port, but since maps are in actual episode 5, so that original episodes don't get replaced, it might not run with anything else than Zdoom based ports (inc. original Zdoom and Zandronum). Some mappers don't even bother with adjusting their maps for lower difficulties and just make it the same on all of them, usually intended as UV difficulty. Which is fine, it's their map but it sucks to encounter those sometimes. I generally just play on HMP when playing normally. Though when I load up Project Brutality I just set it to whatever the equivalent of not too rough is since I'm only there for the violence and just want to kill shit. Stuff shouldn't be breaking backward compatibility every minor/point release, that's stupid on GZDooms part, but modders also need to realize all software that isnt maintained dies to bitrot. Heretic, E2M4: Ice Grotto from wandstart.

The level gives hellstaff at the very end of the level when it's already useless, as there are no more dangerous enemies left. Hellstaff in situated in the center of the floor design that looks like an eye, which suggests symbolic significance tied to hellstaff, and by extension, hellstaff runes.
Replaying the level reveals, that hellstaff runes are scattered throughout the level a very situational manner. There are four in the chapel, one per each stained glass, containing the green key - two easily accessible, another two seemingly requiring wing artifact (they could be glitched to through the other side of the stained glass, if you run-strafe into it, but I don't think that's intentional). Two "inaccessible" stained glasses with runes contain inferno orbs on the other sides of them, which come quite in handy as means of disposing of acolytes.

Further on, one rune is located near an easy to miss room containing a backpack (although that one is a duplicate), one lies near in the building with the blue key near where the missable dragon claw is, one is near the optional and last-to-open building containing wings which are the only way to get back from the second half of the level (outpost) to the first half (ice grotto with a chapel), as there are no teleporters back. There are several runes scattered near the useless hellstaff, two in the "white" ("red" in this case) of the eye itself even. Finally, there are two hellstaff runes in the last chamber containing the main exit from the level.
What you are supposed to do is to use wings in order to get to the first half of the level, get to the chapel, possibly collect two last runes, and then notice a door that was closed for the entire time, is finally open. That door contains the exit from the level, leading to the secret level.

The hellstaff runes, in the context of this specific level, quite obviously mean something alongside "you might wanna look around about here".

Action Doom was made in the era, when the people were pushing the limits of Doom with ZDoom. So we had wads like Void (jumping and puzzles), RTC-3057 and Daedalus (explorory, slow hub-based gameplay), Doom Raider (Tomb Raider gameplay in Doom) and Space Station Omega (full of scripted sequences and cutscenes to make Doom more like Half-Life). It was amazing back then to see, what you would be able to turn Doom into. It was less about exciting gameplay and more like "wow, is this possible in Doom?". Nowadays wads like this wouldn't be anything distinct, since you can do pretty much anything with ZDoom, and source port has became bloated with all kinds of (unnecessary) features.

Action Doom had many things never seen in Doom wad of that scale. Like scores, minibosses, controllable vehicles, minigames, highway part where you have to jump from moving cars to another, new weapon (spreadfire gun) without replacing old weapons by taking it from Heretic (back then you couldn't make new weapons with decorate). I remember playing it first time on 2004, and it was fucking amazing back then. It hasn't aged well, because Doom community and what we expect from good wad has been changed and evolved.

But you should be still thankful to all old Zdoom wads. This was the thing, that pretty much kept Doom community alive in 00s. Experimental Zdoom wads also played a large part to influence the gameplay mods, which would come much later after them.
