Neither the Vita or GPD XD will run Saturn or N64 games at full speed.

Forget it.

Pfft. More like a GPD Win 2 you'll need, and even then its a mixed bag.
I should know, I own one.

i'm debating which to get the new 3ds xl or the gpd xd plus. i'm really only looking to emulate old school cartridge based systems and mame. anything newer disc based would just be a bonus. i know n64 emulation has issues practically everywhere, so that's not a deal breaker either. based on that what do you guys think?

Is saturn emulation well enough that everything runs full speed on anything yet?

Is this a joke? Saturn emulation will never get anywhere

On PCs, sure. I have no problem running Saturn games.

Both 3DS and Vita have their weak and strong points. Vita can do PS1 very well, but anything else is a toss up between unoptimized Retroarch cores, unoptimized emulators or using emulators that were for the psp, thanks to the Vita's built in psp emulator. But when then, the emulators are restricted to the emulated psp hardware. The trade up being that these are constantly being worked on, and the Vita hardware screen, buttons are made of premium materials.

The 3DS has great emulators for snes, nes, Genesis, PC engine, gb/c/a and more, whether they be injections into the official Nintendo emulators, emulators ported to 3ds or the built in gba mode the 3ds has.

But, it can't do PS1 and there's still compatibility issues with certain emulators, unoptimized, sometimes glitchy emulation and some other tidbits. A trade off is that the 3ds, all models, feel cheap and the screens aren't all that great.

It's up to you to do more research and pick what's best for you, I own both and find myself using the Vita more, but my advice is to invest in some sort of controller for a phone and load that up with emulators.

It's just a lot simpler, and your phone is probably more powerful and has more emulators optimized for it.

GPD XD is a phone, right? Just buy a phone

yeah for more than 10 years now. with an i5 cpu you'll have no problem, i3 too probably.
the emulator is SSF.

Handheld? Not happening
Laptop? My mac book air with a dual core i7-5650U runs 90% of saturn games fine in openemu which claims you need a quad core i7 or better. Also does wii emulation no problem at 1080p60fps so anything newer than that will have zero issues with 5th gen emulation
