>Replace battle system (most boring part of the game) with something interesting - improve strategic aspect with larger move set, multiple moves (or Pokemon) per turn, take inspiration from TCGs etc. or make battles more engaging with time management eg PP regens in real time, health potions have a cool down period, moves can be charged to increase their power etc.
>Make types have more importance than a Rock Paper Scissors dynamic, maybe some water moves beat fire (dousing) and some fire moves beat water (boiling) depending on how powerful they are/how long you charge your moves
>More uses for Pokemon outside battles other than cutting trees and swimming, and eliminate need for TM whores by letting movement types do actions rather than specific moves (any fire move can burn a tree instead of having to use cut, any fighting move can smash rocks etc.)

And obviously,
>Make it possible to catch every Pokemon without buying the partner game

Seriously? I never got into Pokemon because of how simple it was. The battle system boils down to repeatedly pressing A until your best move runs out, then change to your next best move and rinse and repeat. As long as you grind you don't even need to think about types.
The only fun bit was walking around the map, which isn't really a game (apart from a couple gyms which had puzzles in).

That's because the entire battle system is balanced around PvP combat. It's like complaining that Street Fighter sucks because you can cheese all of the computer opponents with certain attacks.

>> No.5414902

>>5414849
It's not like saying that at all because Pokemon is primarily a single player game. The vast majority of players get the game for the campaign, not PVP.
On the other hand nobody's buying Street Fighter for the single player.

Even then, Pokemon PVP is basically just as fucking boring. If they added some real strategy like TCG aspects it would greatly improve the single player and PVP.

>It's not like saying that at all because Pokemon is primarily a single player game.
Pokemon's main gimmick has always been the ability to trade and battle with other players. That's why there are two versions in the first place. The story campaign is just context for those features. Notice that unlike most RPGs, every enemy is forced to follow the same rules you do (sans the occasional hacked Dragonite or rarely used things in later games like Totem Pokemon). That's because the game is very specifically crafted for players to be able to battle each other.

Take switching, for example. It's the core of the combat. In single-player, it boils down to a low-risk way to switch your Pokemon for one strong against the opponent because the AI can't predict and punish it. In multiplayer, switching is layers upon layers of mind games. If you switch, your opponent can predict the switch and either also switch or use a move that hits what they think will switch in hard. But if you foresee your opponent reading a switch, you can either stay in and use a move that will hit whatever you expect your opponent's next active Pokemon to be, or you yourself can switch to something strong against your opponent's counterswitch instead of their currently active Pokemon. Or either player can try to punish a switch with a status move, which all (except sleep) cripple certain Pokemon far more than others, so they can also be played around by intercepting something like a burn on a fast special attacker so they can't get paralyzed.

Every single aspect of Pokemon's combat is built around that kind of thing, but it never comes up at all during the story. If you tried to fuck with it to make the PvE battles more engaging, you'd ultimately just break what makes Pokemon's combat appealing.

I feel like a 'battle pong' must exist in some form. I know there are lots of shitty flash games on newgrounds but are there any legit games that expand on Pong? It would be cool to have coins on screen and if you hit them with the ball you get a point for your special like in Tetris Battle Gaiden and you can use a certain number of points to make extra balls appear only on the opponents have of the screen or shrink his paddle or something. This would be really fun.

>> No.5414967

>>5414956
Yes I get that Pokemon's battle system is focused around PVP, but the point remains that most people buy and play Pokemon for the single player campaign. That's why they should have made a battle system that suits PVE instead.

And my point still stands, Pokemon PVP is shit anyway.

Descriptions of Pokemon PvP like this always just remind me of people who take competitive Rock Paper Scissors seriously and act like it's this incredibly deep psychological warfare. It doesn't actually sound as interesting as you think it sounds, it's not actually as deep as you think it is, and it's not all that great in practice either.

You let the wrong Poke get a Substitute up while you switch out and you won’t be saying that.

My crowning achievement was throttling an OU team including a Jirachi with a Rhydon that I refused to switch out. My opponent kept taking Rock Blasts and Focus Punches to the face trying to switch in something that’d counter my next Poke. They forfeited and complained in chat about people who “don’t predict.”
