Leaves enough to the imagination where the aura of mystery remains while still allowing dynamic gameplay on a three dimensional plane. Also what >>5411395 said is true, artists had less of a crutch to rely on with more primitive technology and had to rely on creativity to create the image of an interesting looking universe using only simple geometric shapes, but still not so simple where far more details were possible than in more primitive games.

It was an era stuck between the realistic graphics of the modern era and the creative graphics of the earlier eras, often making for a very intriguing aesthetic - often giving the player a sense of being isolated or a sense that there is more going on in the world than they are seeing.

Why hyperrealistic graphics don't interest me is because it's boring. Why would I want that? If I wanted IRL I would just go outside or something. It leaves no room for imagination. It's so sterile.

This is a revisionist perspective of low poly. The graphics at the time were incredibly realistic and super cutting-edge.

Low poly is aesthetically pleasing for multiple reasons:

1) It goes back to the nostalgia of when you were young, creating a feeling of comfort and familiarity.

2) Artistically speaking, low poly design streamlines the graphics so that they can be observed without being too exploitative. If you have extremely detailed graphics your eye is drawn to all the minutia that distracts from the whole. With streamlined design it makes unique shapes more immediately recognizable and unique looking.

3) Philosophically speaking, it carries more weight on the imagination and less on the visual objectivity of what you're looking at. Things aren't always 100% defined and discernible, which leads to different interpretations of the content. Lara's pistols for instance are definitely pistols, but what kind they are is up for interpretation, especially because their design changes throughout the series, as well as the sound, so there is no consistent criteria through which to judge them, thus they remain up to the object of imagination for the player. Simple things like this can expand the world in ways that benefit ones personal relation to the game.

4) Aesthetically speaking, low poly has a retro appeal now ingrained in society that calls back to a specific time of gaming, the 90's, where the standard of beauty in gaming was low poly 3D.

Combine all of these together and you has a genuine art style that is more than just technological progress in an era of media that was still developing.

We have finally reached a time when people think the 80's was stylish and N64 graphics look good. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s we always laughed at how bad they looked and couldnt imagine going back to them.

Our perceptions have changed. Most people basically live a digital life now. I play 10 hours or more of video games most days, that was unthinkable in the past because you would finish games in a couple of hours.

I guess if you were a baby when you saw your first low poly game in 2000 you might remember it as being incredibly realistic. That doesn't mean it ever was. All it proves is that 10 hours of gaming a day rots a NEETs brain.

Graphics don't have to be realistic to be immersive.

I see a lot of threads like these on /v/ recently. All weirdly worded calling the style "addictive" as here along with some random screenshot.

Jew here. These posts are not made by jews. It should be clear from the ridiculous word choice/statements backpedaling and goalpost moving that these are euphoric fedora tipping atheists.

This is gonna sound kind of weird but here we go. The graphics on the PSX just feel impressive to me, like its not supposed to run on its hardware and having a stable game engine is a feat. It gives me the same feeling as running DOOM on a coffee maker or smart watch.

I know this doesn't sound like a compliment, but it is.

What makes it even better is the last crop of games that came out that utilize the whole spread of features available. Almost every game has design choices that feel deliberate and thought out. Its like the opposite of a unity asset flip where shit just turns out how it does.

Not bashing the competition either, N64 and Saturn are charming in their own way.
