What does /vr/ think about D&D:Shadow over Mystara? It's probably one of my favorite games of all time.

Also, is it rules-friendly to discuss Dragon's Crown here? Any attempt in /v/ is immediately met with /pol/ bullshit.

>Also, is it rules-friendly to discuss Dragon's Crown here?

Nope. Sorry for your lots. I wish I had a place to discuss modern vidya, too.

That being said, I like the prequel better in terms of presentation and whatnot. It is lacking in content, however, and that's a bit problematic for me. Oh well. I wish more arcade games were designed like this, with an RPG and shop system.

Are you an idiot? Of course it isn't, it's not retro.

JoJo/One Piss isn't video games and it gets more discussion on /v/ than /a/

M-user is a fucking boss in Mystara, his invincible backdash is crazy as hell

That has nothing to do with /vr/, dipshit.

Lets not start throwing out words we barely understand, here. The rules state it isnt retro, so no, you wont get alot of people talking about it, and if you did, it'd probably get deleted, so it isnt worth someones time even if you did want to talk about it.

That being said, I've yet to play Mystara, got it installed on Kawaks, planning on a run through later on, pretty excited. Looks like a more badass version of the Golden Axe games.

We could always do a run. Max amount of players is 4, correct? I think Arcade emulators these days have online multiplayer.

I know kaillerra supports 4 player, but you have to constantly save/load state to prevent desynch.

Does GGPO support 4?

Nope. It uses FBA, which does not support 4 players.

Seriously, back in the arcades, this guy was the hardest to play as.

I dont recall the insta kill thing too, but I do recall he had a temporary invencibility if you time just right the animation of he reading a scroll when the magic of that level is over.

anyways, the hardest to play is the thief, I think. I don't knoww for sure because I always used the cleric and mai elven waifu

There are special move combos in the game similar to fighting games. Pressing down+forward attack does a particular attack for the character IIRC. 1/20 times you do this as a mage, it will be an instant kill attack with a dagger (don't think it works on bosses however).

mm delicious thief.
Did she every appear in anything else? Seems a shame to have such a striking character appear in only one game.
She's one of the main things people seem to rememebr about it. I mentioned it to one of my friends a few months back and he said 'Oh, the one with the thief?'

Nope, neither was the magic user.

I really founf the game to be hard and awkward to play. Maybe I was just too used to Final Fight and the like, but these dnd ones had lots of tricksy commands.

Shadows of Mystara and Tower of Doom are getting re-released in June for the PC with online co-op, challenge modes, and some other stuff. I'm pumped because the D&D beat-em up style with leveling up, different classes and all that is my favorite type of game.

Other excellent games: King of Dragons, Knights of the Round.

>> No.543913

I never liked that XP wasn't shared, and you actually had to compete for boss kill XP

It made being paired with, say, a greedy m-user a bit angering.

Tower of Doom was in a pizza place in Goleta, CA. That's where I always played it during college, I only got to play 2 player once. Shadows over Mystara was in a comic book store in my hometown of Lodi, CA, that's where I always played it, but the comic store relocated and got rid of all its arcade games.

I actually preferred Tower of Doom. It was easier, it felt more fair, less chaotic, easier on the wallet. I also liked the Tower of Doom storyline and branching paths more.

Do remember level ups are fixed and XP are merely.. points. Also, Dwarf and Elf use the 1st Ed D&D rules and are thus nerfed by their own natural level caps. YES, ELVES ARE LONG-LIVED AS HECK AND ARE STUCK ON LEVEL 10 AFTER ADVENTURING FOR 200 YEARS.

Yeah, there were some seriously retarded things from D&D that (mis)informed a lot of our classic games.

Also, 1st Edition stat rolls: 3d6, no rerolls/adjustments, in that order. Look at Dwarf's stats. The rest? LOOK AT ALL THIS CHARISMA! (Yes, I'm the dude from the previous ToD/SoM thread with character sheets and other goodies, suppose I'll paste the ToD ones this time)

And it was *fine* if you actually played 2e, because most progression stops around level 10 anyway; you stop gaining your hit die and the like.

In any case the xp required to go to level 11 was immense in any case, and unlikely to be gained unless your DM was the serious Monty Haul type (combat gave tiny piddling amounts of xp unless you were a warrior - the main source of wizard xp was successfully casting spells, which was something like 50 - 100xp per spell successfully cast; which would mean getting the next 125,000 xp would take many, many sessions). Getting to level 10 in the first place would take you many, many sessions, assuming your character didn't die somewhere inbetween.

>> No.545171

>>545152
Also, for anyone accustomed to 3.x and/or 4e, the stats in >>545142 and >>545148 might seem very low, but really a character was still pretty playable even with middling stats.

Experience level mattered a lot more; there isn't a whole lot of difference between a strength 12 fighter and a strength 14 fighter save the amount of encumbrance they can handle.

Stat bonuses generally didn't start occuring until you hit 16 in a stat, and even then the started off modest. Magic items and potions had a tendency to just set your stat to a particular value, rather than add to your base level, so at higher levels of wealth and experience stat differences tended to even out as well.

>> No.545193

Bit of a reversal from basic D&D, where you gained a point of xp for every gp worth of treasure you found.

Also failing a save against rattlesnake venom killed you instantly.

>> No.545303

>>545193

That was kept, but IIRC rogue-types - thieves and bards - were the classes that gained bonus xp from finding treasure. Couple with their relatively lower experience thresholds they often gained levels far, far faster than others in the party, assuming a typical dungeoneering-oriented campaign.

2nd Ed. had plenty of save-or-die poisons carried over too, like the cursed cloak of poison.

Lucia the Elf and her magical ability to use a shield and cast spells. Judging from her stats on the image, she also wears leather armor. Elf is op, nerf her. Or at least.. have that level cap. Charismatic.

Quite possibly the most overpowered character due to actually having a useful prime requisite, gaining extra spells.. in AD&D. Not here :) Also Charisma. If I remember right, Fighters back then did everything with D10's, Clerics with D8's, Thieves with D6's and Mages with D4's. Barbarians added D12 :)

To be honest, I think it should be allowable to discuss Dragon's Crown in here in the same spirit that computer RPGs based on the classics and historical discussion are allowed on /tg/. Its highly relevant to the classic beat em up genre, of which the D&D games are a particularly apt example.

So long as we're selective about what is tolerated and don;t go throwing the doors open to anything with 'retro' pixely graphics and 'chiptunes'. Dragon's Crown though? That should be of intrest to many a retro man.

What do you mean 'did everything'? That's thier hit dice, sure. Meaning the die thier hit points are drawn from.

As has been noted, the characters represent, more or less, perfectly playable examples from the days of yore when exceptional stats were exceptional and average ones didn't virtually count as being a cripple.
