I've been on the fence about getting an old optiplex for an emulation machine, or starting to try and recollect older retro games. Does anyone else have a dedicated computer like this?

I had the hacked Wii for a long time, it's a great option, especially for lightgun games if you don't have the space for a CRT. Since I started making pretty good money I decided to build a dedicated PC so I could play more modern games (Dreamcast, PS2) at high resolution and use other controllers.

An i5 optioned should only set you back like 30 bucks or so and would be sufficient to run whatever you might want to play accurately. Check out your local goodwill and they might have some good stuff cheap. Make sure you get a 4 series or newer.

I don't prefer to do either/or both are fine ways to play the games you enjoy. I have not tried the MIST FPGA yet, but I hear it is moving along quite well and I'd hope it will become a great inexpensive option. It seems a lot prefer using a Raspberry Pi for their MAME needs, but I am unwilling to give that a go at this time.

My dedicated emulation machines aims were to be small, quiet, power efficient, cheap, and fun to use. MAME, DOSbox, ScummVM, Dolphin, PCSX, etc. runs well enough on them. Give the games a try, you might find something you'll like.

I'm currently getting rid of a GPD device that I almost never use and plan on getting started with MiSTer at some point. I have flash drives for the consoles I really care about (NES, Genesis, and SNES) and prefer original hardware, but FPGA seems like the best option in the long term.

I'd like to sell off a good chunk of my NES collection, too, since I own a good amount of games that don't offer much sentimental value to me.

I think it's neat that there are collectors out there, but I'm trying not to become too attached to my possessions (at least as far as games go). I already own two CRTs as it is.

If not, then... I mean, obviously. Of course a single Power PC core isn't going to emulate 5th gen and beyond very well.

I bought myself an Alienware alpha to test it out years ago. I was so impressed with it, I gave it to one of my kids, and ended up buying one for each of my kids. They are quite a bit of power packed into a very small box. They are easy to upgrade, and run windows 7, linux and beyond without issue. They don't run contemporary AAA games unless they are on medium settings, but that is still impressive for a $200 used PC.

I am a PC gamer, and use a Wii on a CRT for emulation. I didn't get it to emulate 5th-6th gen, nor do I care about that. I use it to emulate 8-16 bit games. I still own many of the systems it emulates, so all it did was replace a NES, SNES and a Genesis under my TV with something that works really well. I don't expect it to do Playstation. I own a playstation.

>I have flash drives for the consoles I really care about (NES, Genesis, and SNES) and prefer original hardware
The wii does all of the systems you listed quite well. However, there is no Sega genesis controller that I am aware of.

>instead of collecting
can we all stop with this false dichotomy. Plenty of people enjoy real hardware without falling into the whole "collecting" thing. Personally when I get a new console I buy a couple of cheap games for it to test it out, then just get a flash cart or mod it to play backups. If you're serious about enjoying retro games the best way possible, you should really look into investing in retro hardware instead of an emulation machine.

How do you go from the PC to component video? What resolution do you output?

I got my modded NES and SNES classic editions. Yeah, you can't fit very much on there, but I very much enjoy the whole package. Looks like a console, has the controllers, the snazzy UI, the borders ( which I've made some custom borders for ), the save state system, the mod to press an input to go back to the menu, the rewind system, and I like being able to choose the cover art myself and even make folders with custom art to organize my games how they want.

All my favorite games go there, for everything I couldn't fit, I've got a Wii. And an Everdrive 64 for N64 stuff.

I usually don't have fun cheating my way through games. And even if I wanted to, I can easily open an emulator up and do it. Do you think having the hardware somehow stops me from emulating?

Probably, but I have an autistic fixation on not using software emulation. The Wii is probably more accurate than MiSTer overall right now, though, considering that the most accurate core on there (Turbografx-16) is said to only be about 85% accurate.

At first I thought this anime girl was pretty cute.

The more I look, the worse it gets. Hand is deformed as fuck, I thought it might have been a chinese sweatshop accident that mangled her poor hand. But no, it's some genetic deformity because her arm is way to short and her head and neck don't fit her body or each other.

This girl has serious deformities, possibly from generations of inbreeding on a small island. She might make for a fun night but I don't want her as a waifu. Her genes need to stop and not wreck havoc on future generations.

So in all seriousness, this artist has great potential, but they need to study and apply basic human anatomy to their drawings.

PC and Wii.
Not willing to spend thousands of dollars on equipment that is fast reaching end-of-life. Also not willing to put up with scammers or scalpers. Also I love using my GC and PS3 controllers too much.

>> No.5403286

Wii covers all the retro systems worth playing minus the PS1, which I just use the PS3’s PSN classics for. I got rid of my retro systems in favor of this years ago and it’s been great. I’ve used PC emulators in the past but they are much more annoying to set up and/or continually add games to, never look as slick as console interfaces, and have typical PC wonkiness that I put up with for modern games but feels especially out of place with retro ones. I like the plug and play idea still.

It isn't bad at all for what it is. If you have a tube TV, it is one of the best options for emulation. If you are using HDMI, you might as well stick to a PC.

I doubt you even know what makes a 'strong' PC, 'strong'.
Most likely scenario:
>Sells entire collection for $280 to a local
>Buys $1,400 Alienware X1337 RAWR XD: Epilepsy Edition
>Total value of components new: $700
>Total value of components if bought used: $350
