DKC2, SMW... it's really not that remarkable for proto-collectathon types of games like that. for stuff like zelda etc you're not really 'supposed to' find everything and don't need to, and in a lot of cases you might need a guide just to know for sure that you actually got everything.

Sparx finder made it easier than the first two games but my first natty 100% was Spyro 3 (or rather 120% or whatever the fuck it ends at when you finish the bonus world)

Once I was ready, on my final run I did the Romani quest and the Kafei quest (annoying even with song of inverted time) and wiped out all the bosses, before winning the Fierce Diety's mask and saving Termina. Unless I missed an important "time-sensitive" side quest I think I set up the "saved" timeline to have the least tragic outcome. You can never save everyone, however.

I used a cheat only to obtain the game but no cheats itself, as I got an action replay disc that only had preloaded cheats for Animal Crossing, and I unlocked the original game that way. It was my first time playing the game, and it was 2003.
I had no internet at the time. I had no manual. I had no players guide. And none of my friends played the game so they couldn't help.

It took a week. Not nonstop play because, well, I was actually playing Animal Crossing and I needed to do my daily things to get my sweet sweet bells. But I got all the hearts, sword upgrades, items.

These days I can clear the main quest pretty quickly but I wish I thought to draw maps of the dungeons while I played. It would have made Ganon's lair much less of a nightmare

Despite my nostalgia for DKR I didn't enjoy it as much if not not at all when I replayed it a year ago and the biggest detractor is the amount of shit you have to collect to actually progress in the game. Why the hell do you have to collect balloons as trophies to unlock other races, look around in the 'overworld' for even more of them, look for some keys just to play the battle mini games, re-do tracks just to collect some god damn coins (seriously, was racing against rubberbanding CPUs not challenging enough for Rare??) and beat some god damn bosses as if DKR tried to be more of a collectathon platformer instead of an actual racing game?

Don't get me wrong: I played the game back in 1998 and some parts about the game still hold up like the music and the visual designs in general and you can tell the characters play differently from eachother but Rare seriously had some addiction to collecting stuff for some reason during their N64 days. Same thing I hate about Donkey Kong 64 and Jet Force Gemini, if only they made those games more straight-forward instead of forcing to collect shit that could've stayed optional it would have made replaying them much less of a chore.

Without a guide? Yeah, I did. Was hard as balls but I did it.

>> No.5414520

Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 I did without any help. I don't think there are really any guides that could help for that anyway since the game tells you the objectives and you just gotta get good.

I've nearly 100% completed every Zelda game without help but there's always a handful of collectibles I just can't fucking find.

NES Metroid I did without a guide when it hit the GBA port but there wasn't much to find in that one.

the only time i consulted a guide for this game is for some treasure(?) behind a waterfall. That was bullshit. at this point, i use a guide if i want to 100% but i'll spend 20-60 minutes on something to give it a fair chance. in the case of replays, I will glance at a guide to see what is involved. I still want to do an all gems run of illusion of gaia since it's in the manual how to do it so that seems fair.

It's not that hard if you play the GBA version which tallies what has and hasn't been completed. This comes at the expense of worse graphics, worse sounds, and JUST WHAT I NEEDED though.

Play the original SNES version (non-emulated) or neck yourself.

Hey, you can't always choose how to play a game when you're young and broke.. Honestly the GBA version of SMW is a better introduction to the game than the GBC port of Donkey Kong Country which was also my first version of said game, and unlike SMW I didn't go back and play the original version until adolescence.

>It's not that hard if you play the GBA version which tallies what has and hasn't been completed.

True dat, Anon. I remember the very last secret entrance I ad to find to this day, because it was the only one I had to look up: Valley Ghost House. It's the only Ghost house with a secret exit, and there was no way to tell since all the branched levels are marked as red spots on the map, and that one being a ghost house isn't. The GBA version I played years later unveiled that shit.

>> No.5415376

Its sad, i dont think I've 100% something because many had secrets that were not always easy to find. I think the only game i 100% without a guid was mega man 8 and X7. I was pretty young. I was gonna say mmx1 but i later found out about the hadoken capsule.

But that's not even the only ghost house with two exits. The first ghost house you can find in the game (no not the one with donut secret, the other one) has two as well.

You're right, sorry about that Anon. Guess my memory isn't the best when it comes to smaller details. WL II however I vividly remember beating with no guide.

Never had the chance to play Wario Land 2, but I completed 3 without using a guide. Mostly repeating levels over and over and keeping notes after the cutscenes stopped playing. I found out much later that you can go to the temple and ask Rudy where the remaining treasures are.

Dr. Mario 64 with Metal Mario and Vampire Wario on S-Hard beeyotch

>> No.5416724

>>5416371
It's a shame that you couldn't fight any bosses after you collect all the music notes so imagine if you're playing it for the first time without knowing you don't have to follow the directions Rudy gives to you and you don't meet any bosses after the first time you beat the final boss. It also tosses up a narrative dissonance that you know who the final boss is while still following his advice and no that's not a major dealbreaker for gameplay but it feels like it's one of the less thought through parts of Wario Land 3.

Some of the later stages were really neat like the void and the final forest area but others like the cloud stage is even more of a backtracking hell than anything else in the game. Now that I think about it, compared to Wario Land 2 there are many more instances of having to repeat a section because of smaller mistakes both during boss encounters and in normal missions, which proves even more that you don't need lives in a video game to make a game hard or even frustratingly difficult (no those are not the same thing). Also, screw the owl stages. They couldn't possibly have them designed even more annoyingly.
