Who's ideas do you like more, and why?

>> No.5399103

Carmack for tech, Romero for game design.

Game design will get you so far, game engine is where old ID games truly shine

Tom Hall for story? I mean he did got his point across in Deus Ex.

Tom Hall was the real genius.

Carmack revolutionized engine design, Romero is more of a philosopher than a designer for for FPS games.

>> No.5399140

Carmack ideas simply bc i think they got us further sooner than we intentionally would have.

>> No.5399154

the thumbnail looks like carmack has a cute wife and daughter

It does? What's wrong with you?

id after romero left pretty much was an era of mediocrity following Q3A.

>doom 3 was a glorified tech demo
>nobody remembers quake 4 & wolfenstein 2009
>people only remember rage because there's a sequel coming out
>doom 4 was going to be a COD clone originally

To be fair he was only good at optmization for shitty pcs. Ultima Underworld came out before Wolfenstein 3D and featured a much more advanced engine

Romero. He had the game and level design ideas.

This. Both were necessary to make id what it was.

Carmack = Quake 2 a technically polished marvel lacking soul and substance

Romero = Daikatana a buggy slapshod mess with an ambitions story and bold genre defying leaps buried deep down

They both needed each other.

Anyways, Quake 2 has its moments of world building. in terms of level design then yes, its kinda lacking. It makes up for it though with interesting art decals and kick ass music. Can't forget fun broken weapons like railgun and running around the same areas that didn't feel like padding. Overall its different from Quake and Doom and I welcome it
