the grinding is only really bad for the final dungeon (jesus christ). the only way to play through this game without grinding is knowing where to find and make the best equipment.

About cooking: later on, you'll get access to a town that you can rebuild. You can go to other places and ask NPCs to live in your houses. Most NPCs sell stuff, while others give you access to minigames. However, you can't "recruit" everyone, you have to "choose" people to live in each house. That means if you "choose" (because you don't really know by then about it) the wrong person to live in a house, you'll be locked out of the minigame, and with an useless NPC occupying a house.

About the sword, I think it was actually a helmet...? Either way, you have to fish it out of some lake in the middle of bumfuck nowhere.

Well, I did as a brainless kid. You can actually see that fishing spot if you encounter an enemy way before you got the bird.

So, when you are able to fly, you kinda go back there.
