I've had a lot of fun with this recently.
RA provide pre modded emulators to support their overlay and achievements. They have databases with achievements for retro games ranging from NES to N64 (They have stuff like GB/GBA/GG/GEN). Have any of you tried it yet?

Also, fuck this Super Castlevania IV achievement

>> No.5393943 [DELETED]

ive heard about it but grew old of achievements long ago. theyre really pointless i think, just enjoy the game. unless you want a laugh or something for "achievement unlocked: get your first death!"

I understand that. For me it's like it just adds a little extra (as pointless as they might be) so I'm having a lot of fun revisiting some of my favorite titles. Thinking of playing Chrono Trigger next since it has 78 achievments.

I thought this was a joke but turns out its real. Why anyone would make this/ use it is beyond me.

i get that. id say if you want something different while still enjoying the same game try item randomizer romhacks or even a new romhack if you havent already. thats something completely different though and only a suggestion. i think i tried it once before and it was pretty fun for sonic

Achievement systems can be fun; they add a little extra challenge and many people enjoy them.

You don't have to be a snoot about it. If you don't like them, then just don't download the mod and move on with your day.

I know there are quite a handful of games that have randomizer hacks at this point so I'm gonna have to check some of them out. Thanks for reminding me!

The only real point of achievements is to show other people what you've done, which is why they make sense with something like steam but just seem kind of pointless in emulation to me.

Well, your achievements get posted on their website (on your account and in the game's page) it has also have an equivalent to Xbox gamerscore and a percentage of players who have gotten the achievements.

I'm going to be a snoot and judge achievements because they are trash. They're an extrinsic motivator for playing games, and they were popularized as a habit-forming reward system to keep people playing in spite of unrewarding game design or a player exhausting the interesting content and becoming disengaged. They are a mobile-game leech tier reward system.

>>5394014
I'm not really an achievement hunter, but they can be used smartly. They can get players to try different ways to play a game rather than get complacent and use one method of play the whole time. They can be used to challenge the player to do certain things. They can also just be amusing gags. Portal 2 for instance had a pretty inspired use of achievements for the start of that one chapter. You probably know the one.

Or they can just be cheap check boxes. Get x kills, play x hours, do x whatever. When used like that, yeah achievements are stupid. I don't think they should be mandatory (which they are on playstation and xbox), but if the devs can use them in good ways, they are fine.

I understand they can be good for encouraging certain behaviors in-game, but good game design can lead a player in various ways without the external, shallow, and low-effort checkboxes. They are the 'lateral gaming' equivalent of a mandatory tutorial screen before getting to control your character. So i concede they aren't always completely awful, at best they manage to be a surrogate for better game design and play-testing.

Japanese games tend to have the most bizarre achievements, like "kill 20,000 enemies" or "talk to some random people at some random time".

Just ask in the forums to get Japanese games linked. A lot of shit is just lazily linked to whatever particular rom the guy that made the achievements used.

Achievements are the worst thing to happen to games, especially ones where you can play sandbox style. It just encourages playing in specific ways and not actually playing the game at your own pace. This is the reason Don't Starve has a "Fuck you" achievement that is openly insulted in the game on the console version.

If you've not played it (you should, it's a good game), gears are a very valuable resource and integral to long term survival, especially over the winter season. Getting them involves fighting dangerous clockwork monsters that will fuck your day up without good gear.

If a game was to send your stats, play time, and results of actions to a server that anonymizes the data, people would roar in anger about it. However, make them public and call them "achievements" and everyone loves them except people who see through the bullshit.

>> No.5394505

You use any kind of romhack or patch, and the achievements don't work. And since it's been years since I've first played many of these games, I like to try new translations, bugfixes, and even some mechanic changes in a lot of them.

What kind use would that data be to anyone even if it was gathered in secret? It's of no use to advertisers, or even other game developers. This argument makes no sense and comes across as neurotic.

Let you know what choices are picked, what optional content is ignored, what is completely abandoned beyond the bare minimum, what level people complete the game at and so on. That kind of data is very useful for a developer so they can tell where problems in the game lie, and fix them for the current and future products.
