So I hold the Metal Slug series in pretty high regard, Metal Slug X especially, despite never being that good at them. Lot of fond memories of playing it in the arcades, quarterfeeding until I beat the game or ran out of money (and I never beat the game). Good times. Stupid times.

Well, recently I decided to put something to the test, and picked up a copy of Metal Slug X (my favorite) off PSN. I played through it from start to finish without a thought for how many continues I was burning through, only to check it at the end after I finally beat it. I forget the exact number, but it was somewhere in the 60s or 70s. At this level of play, it would've taken by about $30 to $35 in quarters to beat the game. Told you I wasn't very good. That's downright casual.

Since then, every now and again, I'll pick up the controller and play a little bit from mission one. The first CONTINUE? I get, I quit the game and go do something else. Doing this I've been getting a little better bit by bit, with my ultimate goal being able to One Credit Clear the whole game.

Thus far, I can consistently and reliably get through the first mission in its entirety and about half of the second mission on a single credit. It's not much, but considering I was averaging about 12 continues per mission before, I think it's a nice step in the right direction.

Metal Slug thread?

Sue me for picking one of the first images that cropped up on Google.

Never played Metal Slug seriously, but I suppose it's more or less the same as danmaku. You have to memorize your shit and lose a thousand times. It's not just about paying attention.

I did the same thing with Metal Slug 2.
I can get all the way to the tunnel in mission 5 without losing a single life but once I hit those zombie things I just lose it.

Good for you OP. Though I'd suggest you start with 1CCing the first game since it's not too hard as far as arcade games go and your skills will carry over to X anyway.

For me MS3 and the extra long final mission take the title for hardest

MS1 and the rest are different leagues though.

I had no problems finishing MS1 with one credit, but hell if I'll ever do it in one of the later games.

The first one you memorize the patterns way more easy. I think the others have more random patterns that really fuck you.

OP here, the thing is MSX is the one I have the most nostalgia for, being the one I mostly played when I was a kid. Going for a 1cc in any of the others would still be fun, and I'd like to try it some day, but I feel like I gotta do right by MSX first.

Also I don't have the original, and can't remember whether it's on PSN or not (I try to support games I like, and I like Metal Slug).

Especially when you're fighting the mothership core. Every console port I've played has nerfed those giant electric balls he throws. How do you even dodge them in the arcade version?

I shoot for 10-15 credits. I'm not a big arcade junkie, but this is usually how I play them.

Thanks for the confidence boost, my average is 12/13 for the whole game. All of the early slugs are just thinking about your position and picking off the hardest enemies first, I played the 360 one recently though and I thought it was just cheap as shit.

You have to know to crouch so you can shoot faster.
It's still a really dumb section, though.

I like you, OP. You're doing it the right way now, and that's fucking awesome.

If you were in a real arcade, you'd be getting the most bang for your buck that way, too. Now I want to play Metal Slug, but wanting to play Metal Slug just makes me want to order a new stick with Seimitsu parts, which I'm waiting for a good deal on...

Some tips:

When in the Metal Slug, or the Slug Flyer, when you're holding down, you can rapidfire your normal grenades. Most bosses crumble in seconds when you're throwing all your accumulated ordnance at once.

Master ejecting from the tank. When you jump out, you're temporarily invincible for a few frames. Use that to your advantage to keep the tank as long as possible.

On the first stage of the UFO fight, save your grenades for the mini UFO's. They're a much bigger threat than the larger ship.
