Any of you have any thoughts on the original half life? I would really like to know.

>> No.5393267

It is a fun game. I enjoy it.

>> No.5393341

A nice reminder that linear set-piece level design is not inherently awful.

I wish it was still a popular modding platform.

I think that's the 7th greatest game ever made.

HL isn't even that linear among other FPS, especially this piece of shit called HL2.

My thoughts is we have a retrofps general and people are making new threads about it WAY WAY too fast. Please dont kill threads just to incite flame wars, we all know how this is gonna go

>> No.5393563

the only thing i appreciate from hl after playing it years later is the jumping. its the weirdest thing ive come to appreciate from a genre, hopping around at fast speeds.

>> No.5393843

A lot of the HL threads are by the same anti-HL guy, the dude has a raging hatred for HL.

>> No.5393850

>>5393479
Who cares? Mods and jannytrannies won't do fuck all, so bait and trolls run amok. There's no reason for them NOT to make these threads; they get the (You)s, they get the 100 posts... You had a guy(s) making the exact same thread but with pictures of different games and all of them managed solid reply counts and stayed bumped.

This is your internet now. 4chan acted like retards constantly and unfailingly and this is the result, man. We made the bed and we lie in it.

overrated, influential for the wrong reasons, terrible sound design
all the interesting parts were left on the cutting room floor, valve have a history of rushing games out after scrapping years of work
excellent AI for the time though, even if quake scripting limitations are really showing

>>5394389
Nah the original is fine. It’s HL2 which is the terribly overrated game that was never good. If the label ‘aged badly’ ever applied to a video game it would apply to that one.

Game journalists and mustards were jerking so hard over the gravity gun (HL2 wasn’t even the first game with Havok physics) and the lack of ‘cutscenes’ (which it actually has but they are in-gameplay and unskippable) that they failed to realize it was completely mediocre.

>> No.5394419

>>5394403
I don't like either game all that much, love HL1 movement (pre steam build, when they fucked it) and surface tension is great. HL2 I hate Alyx with a passion, and yeah sitting through the shit story on replays, but HL2 has more variety in it, every chapter has its own gimmick and it works well for some of them. Combine AI is dog shit cause mappers weren't communicating with the programmers (desks on wheels) and gauss cannon is missed to this day.

Great game. I still consider the early parts of Half-Life 1 to be the pinnacle of gaming experience.

When I was a kid I couldn't get past unforseen consequences because I thought that you were somehow expected to backtrack towards the tram because there was a scientist hanging on.

I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, enjoyed mods and then I tried again years later and saw the vent by coincidence. It was great and I really loved that mod that turned all drops into money and turned charging stations into weapon dispensers that let you buy counterstrike guns.

Honestly, the most fun I had was playing sven coop with my friends.

jesus fucking christ, I was 6 when half life came out, played it shortly after quake 2 and the bit I got stuck on was blast pit
I dont know whether to laugh at you or pity you

>> No.5394589

>>5394403
Regardless of whether or not the physics were actually groundbreaking, they're still incredibly fun. I suppose if you don't like Source or Havok then HL2 loses all appeal though.

But anyone who thinks HL2 is bad or mediocre probably needs to play more actually bad games.

I guess I interpreted it as the game expecting me to use platforming. I pretty much reached every possible place in that map from the ducts on the side to balancing on the inch rails only to fall to my doom.

My fault for overthinking it when the answer was so simple and straightforward. I beat it in short order within hours of getting past that segment though.

HL2 is fun. I still play it every once in awhile. Bug level climax is great. City fights are fun too. Ravenholme still sorta scary at parts but game limitations show through for sure but not near as much as you would think for a 15 yrd old game.

>> No.5396338

Personally I enjoyed the multiplayer more than the single player like honestly found the single player borring

I had bought it but never played much of it at all. Never got into the series. How does it stack up next to the other 90's shooters?

>> No.5397110

Both games are about equally linear though? The only real exception is Blast Pit in the first game, and even then it's just a matter of which one of two linear areas you go to first.

>> No.5397123

Great game. I was really excited to play it as I had been drooling over the teaser videos they included on PCG (UK). That video of the level in the office would still get me playing now. I remember thinking the gloves as he held the SMG were super shiny.

I got it for Xmas that year, and it did not disappoint. Xmas day I was en route to the complex on muh monorail

good:
-mostly fun
-important to modding
-aged better that 2

bad:
-too influential, killed non-linear shooters

It's innovative in its approach to storytelling and NPC interaction, but other than that it's a piece of shit fps, the gameplay is horrible.

didn't even pass the first stage and dropped it. Had been playing duke, doom, blood, some other similar stuff... later had gotten this thing for PC RPGs. Suddenly everyone was talking about half life, so I tried it out and it did absolutely nothing for me, maybe I just had gotten bored of fps' I dunno...

Play an actual bad game like Tekwar then reconsider your views. You get sweet laser guns and shit and you fight cool sci fi monsters what more do you want?
