Do you think they would have made a Game Boy Color variant if they ever had the chance to?

>> No.5389564

>>5389561
Well since they had every chance to and didn't my answer would be no

>> No.5389578

Given the technology of the time, the only place they could have gone is adding a light, I should think.

>> No.5389594

>>5389561
Nah because realistically the GBC is still just a variant of the standard Game Boy rather than an entirely new platform.

When the GBC was released work was already underway with the GBA which was a clean sheet design.

>> No.5389661

>>5389594
Exactly. When the best-selling GBC games are actually regular GameBoy, it's telling

Someone please stop me from spending 150€ on a backlit GBA with a flashcard because I love that design despite it being a massive waste of money

If you like it then the money is not wasted.

You can get them cheaper. Dont spend 150Euro bucks.

Such as it was, there was NO good excuse for the original GBA to not be lit.

>> No.5389885

Original GBA still used AAs. People woulda been bitching they hadda pay $2 an hour to play the fucking thing.

Rechargeable batteries where a thing, and indeed Nintendo started using them just a few years later with the SP.

>> No.5389907

I've actually been tempted to get one for the same reason. If you can afford it, and it's going to be something you use regularly, go ahead.

You can make the light very dim, anon, the problem with the original GBA was people tilting it around everywhere trying to see.

You only need a bright light when you are sitting in a place where you are in the glare of sunlight at a bad angle. They could just make the light not serviceable in that situation and people would have still been okay with it.

This is true. I have no idea why there are people on this board that insist that GBC is a separate platform. The New 3DS can do things the original 3DS can't, including playing SNES games, and nobody considers that a separate platform.

>> No.5389931

>>5389594
THIS, I've never considered it a separate product, it felt more like a stopgap revision while people waited for the GBA.

It was also kind of bad, the screen was crap, and most of the games were shovelware.

>It was also kind of bad, the screen was crap
how so? It has no screen ghosting/motion blur like OG or pocket has. It wasn't front/back lit but so wasn't gba until many years later. I guess its smaller than pockets screen but the size never bothered me(then again I've never had pocket).

My only complain is the plastic cover, when it gets even slightly scratched you cant see shit through it, and if you take it off(or replace it with modern glass replacement) its clear and you can see it no problem even without any kind of light mod or wormlight(assuming you aren't sitting in complete darkness or in very dim room).

>> No.5390684

>>5389879
This. The only possible excuse is if it was designed by adults who weren't born after it's release.

I agree with this, though I still consider it a new platform because there is a notable step in game design between the two.

I remember kid me being pissed off we were getting the gameboy color instead of the gameboy light. Having an accessible screen was always way more important to me than a color one. Plus that indiglow color always pleased me.

Who thought getting rid of the battery light was a good idea? Besides my stupid 6 years old self.
Cover had silver border but I had to replace it.

Name 3 handheld platforms that were already doing backlit portable games. Cell phones don't count, because flip phone.

Game Gear
Lynx
Turbo Express

The anon you responded just said :"lit," not "backlit." I kindly as you stop moving the goalpost.

Bar phones with a color display were just getting popular then. If I remember right they weren't backlit either.

The GBC was already a variant of the GB.

>> No.5395218

>>5389917
New 3DS only had about 5 games that were exclusive to it, if even that. Whereas the GBC was different enough in terms of hardware to basically be its own system, not to mention having its own library, consisting of hundreds of exclusive games, not even counting the ones that can be played on regular Game Boy.

The Game Gear actually is backlit.
Replacing the fluorescent tube it uses with an energy efficient LED panel is a popular mod that can well over double the battery life.

You don't remember right. Probably because you weren't born yet. Even the first one was lit, which is what we're talking about despite the goal post moving or sheer ignorance that there's more than one way to light a display. My T68 still works fine. Definitely backlit.

You're comparing NiMH to Li-ion.
