This one but Cascade Capers from DKC3 is also magnificent.
Favorite level is a lot harder to choose but the second castle level in DKC2 in world 6 is probably my favorite to replay now and then. There's no autoscrolling but there's also still a lot of variety in enemies and stage hazzards in general and the whole atmosphere of it is incredible to this day.

DKC was an early experiment by Nintendo to see if people will like a game with ass controls and gameplay if it looked pretty enough and had enough fake hype around it at launch.

Obviously, they were insanely successful so they repeated the same formula with Mario 64 and pretty much every other game since.

I 100%'d 1 and 2 recently, going for that 105% on 3, never tried it before. 3 is definitely the weakest game, but I've come to appreciate it more when going for everything. It has the most content.

I kind of think that while dkc1 was a good game, it was kind of a mess final product.
like the levels are good by themselves, but there's a really peculiar overuse of cave levels, some level themes have only one or two levels. chimp caverns is really disappointing theme wise as the last world..

you can tell even rare thought they dropped the ball on this, because in dkc2 and 3 every level theme got reused the same number of times.

I kind of agree with you.
Photorealism is great, but that kind of weird and surreal graphics are very distinctive of computer graphics. I always loved watching the 3D animations of tha era because GCI was then a very interesting mix of realism and surrealism.
I prefer old intros like Soul Edge for PS1 or Final Fantasy VIII than modern 3D cutscenes.

In my opinion, that style is something that only a computer can do. Photorealism, cell shading and other styles are just imitations of reality or of other styles like Stop moption and 2d art. Meanwhile, the interesting possibilities of the original CGI style have been almost abandoned, unfortunately.

Same here. I never share this because I assume people would just dismiss it as bait but SM jumping is way too floaty for me. I also don't like the insane amount of inertia in SM. But then again, I have to admit that I never really got gud at any SM game.

I also prefer the ability to roll through enemies and throw barrels over cape spin or fireball throws.

It wasn't really ashamed, it had to do more with the GBA not being able to handle low pitches and DKC3's ost being primarily low pitched. The GBA port feels a bit rushed as well, seeing how it just doesn't have some of the features in the 2 previous GBA ports (no new intro, no improved collectable list) had.

I think its the land and the water, in the original they are crust as fuck, really give off the feeling of being actual rough ground and the pixel vomit on the water gives that feeling of light hitting water in movement, where its all different colors

Ultimate ground is too clean, it tries to look rough but not enough, it looked more natural in the original because our minds filled the details, while the water is too still an blueish.

I don't know exactly what he means but rolls in dkc1 work a bit differently than the others.
You pick up more speed rolling into enemies and if you roll don't a hill or decline you'll continue rolling until you cancel the roll or reach the bottom.
