I never really see much people bring these games up. I used to love these games as a kid on my Turbografx-16. What are your thoughts on the Bonk games?

Great graphics but ultimately soulless platforming

This. Not much depth to the first ones, but cool enough when they came out, was pretty fun.

Super Bonk is probably the one I enjoyed most out of the few I played. It's certainly different from the first one in the way each area feels distinctly different from the others, and more like an adventure than just level-based platforming.

God damn how often are you going to post this thread

Good graphics, but the only platform series more repetitive is Valis,
which also doesn't get talked about much (and for the same reasons).

The bonk mechanic itself has more depth than typical platforming mechanics for the time. It encouraged exploration in the levels to find smileys as well as getting good at the mini games to up your smiley count so you can get health upgrades and one-ups at the end of levels. Pretty remarkable for an arcade-y platformer of its kind.

I love 'em all. Great gameplay, visuals, and music. My favorite of them all is probably Bonk's Adventure. The first game was just so charming. Plus I liked Bonk's character sprite before they made him cuter in part 2.

I was too poor to own a turbo grafx16 in 1990 eventually I did get the genesis in 1992 when it dropped down to $150 dollars then I got the SNES in 1994.

Oddly weird difficulty curve, but an alright game.

Fuck that final area though, 6 bosses back to fucking back killed me and that final boss was something else, but I fucking did it with little health to spare.

I like the Game Boy titles. The mechanics are fun. It should emphasize exploration more.

the best in the series is Bonk 2. But Super Bonk 2 (snes japan only) and Bonk 1 are great games as well.

Bonk 2 is surprisingly one of the best 16-bit platformers. Excellent level design, minigames and enemy variety keep you hooked with a rather deep scoring system

lots of secret collectible items that will racket up your score as well

Bonk 3 is a giant disappointment. Super Bonk isn't too great either but does it's own thing. Has a lot of PC Engine sprite re-using which looks downright bizarre on the snes

Play Bonk 2 if you want more exploration

Valis is trash, I agree, but Bonk is far above that level. Even the mediocre Bonk 3 isn't as bad as the average Valis game
