Has anyone played this romhack? It came out recently and I'm about to dive in.
I'm not confident though, the last "relocalization" romhack I played was Phantasy Star IV and it was fucking awful. I'm praying this is one is ok...
Here's the change list:
-Death Machine: AKA Kettle Kin gets restored to its full uncensored chainsaw wielding glory. Not only is this a graphical hack, it also rewrites the its AI to perform just as it did in the original Japanese release.

-Teleportation Circles: When Square released this game in 1993 Nintendo of America had strict policies against religious imagery appearing in its titles. The six-pointed stars in the teleportation circles were reduced to triangles. This hack restores them to their original appearance.

-Title Screen Background: When Square ported this game over to English, they butchered the original background image. Because of some graphical problems they cropped the image of the full Mana Tree at its roots and expanded it. The result is a blurry pixelated mess. Relocalized restores the original image.

-Opening Text Crawl: Relocalized updates the opening text crawl to that of the superior HD version.

-Relocalization: The titular feature. This hack takes the game’s outdated, awkward, and inaccurate text and script elements and localizes them differently. Just like with FuSoYa’s hack before it, Relocalized holds true to the style of beloved 90’s Squaresoft translator, Ted Woolsey.

I can't imagine being such a pink frilly pantywaist that the exclusion of a cigarette or six point star would upset me.

Last time I believed fan patches for already translated shit was BNW and BNW is so fucking crammed full of the absolute worst dialogue writing I have ever seen in a game. He retconned Mog just to have a fucking self-insert.

I think maybe this is what someone did to look impressive without taking the impressive work of localizing a non-local game.

I've spent an hour or 2 with this now and it's good. It's not that different but certain dialogues read a lot smoother now. All the item names are different which i'm not used to but that's not a bad thing.
>>5378872
I think that's the one, it was by "GhaleonUnlimited". They changed the personalities of the characters which completely altered the tone (everyone is really antagonistic and aggressive now), added pop culture references and there are graphics bugs in it which weren't there before.

Same poster here; I've just skimmed through the Word document the 'translator' enclosed with the patch archive and had a brief look at the PSIV English prototype page on TCRF.

The guy freely admits that he barely even KNOWS Japanese, but resolves to 'punch up' the dialogue and characterization anyway, based only on the spotty and incomplete TCRF translator notes and if it would 'improve' the story/characters.

I absolutely detest this sort of localisation. If the original text is dry and bland, even after being successfully translated/localized in the most fluid and accurate manner possible, than the text is in fact DRY AND BLAND. Keep it that way! It's a fault of the original creators, and I want to see that fault fully conveyed to me (unless it's like the Ghost Stories anime, where the original creators gave their blessing, in which case, have at it). This guy couldn't even do that, he just made up whatever shit made sense to him based on his own imperfect 'understanding' of the characters, who all apparently now sound like insufferable assholes that snark and quip endlessly at each other.

I know it isn't exactly Shakespeare or high art, but at least have some goddamn respect for the original text on PRINCIPLE, especially when you're advertising your work as being more faithful than the translation we actually got.

No. SoM did not lack a translation, the game itself was kind of, "HEY YOU WANT SAVE KINGDOM?" "UNGA BUNGA" "OK PLZ SAVE US."
"MANA?" "MANA!" "MANA GEAR!" "MANA GEAR?" "MANA FORTRESS?" "OUTER MANA?!" "LIQUID THANATOS!!!" "YOU HAVE ROOKIE MANA"

Oh yeah, there's a bit about Going Green and inspiring some seeds to not grow actual trees because that would be killing the seeds.

SoM does not need a relocalization or retranslation. The game just wasn't terribly robust in the first place; it was always about the gameplay and visuals, the world you could wander around in, and the fucking MUSIC MY MAN GAT DAM

Of what? The six-pointed stars? Good lord you guys. This is why these awful retranslations exist, because of pedantic nuisances.

Enjoy the game, enjoy the visuals. The story was silly and stock and the characters were token and the writing was not genius or anything. It was a simple game with a simple plot that relied on its gameplay and art direction to sell copies.

It's because people get their panties in a twist over a removed cigarette that people like >>538850 this """retranslator""" (who doesn't seem to be super great at English to begin with??????) get off as they do and create their godawful interpretations of things that didn't need interpretation to begin with.
The game was neat, it was fun, but its flaws had nothing to do with its story or censorship-- or rather, the writing (and censored features) were never enough to add or detract from the experience barring total fuckery, which is where we arrive with "I'd rather supersede Squaresoft's creation of this game with my own bullshit."

Sounds like a European kinda move. They're always about that bitch-level principle shit.

>> No.5388774

The official retranslation is fine. The game includes full Japanese voice support, so it's not like any rewrite-happy fucktards would be able to change the dialogue all that much without itbeing blatantly obvious that the voices were saying one thing and the translation something else.

Is the story good? Did it need a rewrite? Is it not still just 'GET MANA SPIRIT! DO MANA SEED! FITE MANA BOSS!'?

I don't care if the rewrite was quality. I care if the story is anything more than token fantasy 'get excalibur, fight monsters, make friends and kill the Big Bad' because that's all SoM was. Nothing about it wasn't totally predictable or absolutely token fantasy 'stuff.' The main character barely develops, the story addresses the characters as little more than inserts, and realistically you could just play silent create-a-characters and the full experience more or less.
Besides the girl, most characters' input is a stupid one-liner about what someone else ordered them to do or some prompting to make them continue speaking about The Next Dungeon.

I just don't think any level of retranslation is going to make it any more or less than that level of token 'story that's there because it's gotta.'

Honestly though, they'd have to be trying real hard to fuck this up, there's barely any story in this game in the first place, and there's absolutely zero characterisation. None of them have any personality whatsoever.
But anyway - Compared to some other romhacks this one is fine. There's no "punching up" of the dialogue, there's no pop culture references or "jokes" and there's no blatant tonal shifts. It just reads better, and in the romhacking world that's a fucking miracle.
