If Redump.org & the others offered a Japanese translation of their site & their dumping instructions, along with a Japanese subforum/mod, they would probably get some actual help. I still think it's hilarious that as much as this whole "preservation" thing is concerned, the No-Intro & Redumpers have consistently ignored doing any of the official PC updates for even the western trash. It would have been an easy thing to do; just go to official sites and start archiving them. Of course, everyone's too busy preserving demo discs & prototypes no one really wants.
It wouldn't be too hard to go on Winny & Share, get the discs yourself & start datting them, but that would probably take too much effort for the average /vr/ leech.

Just a general question, are there any notable instances where a game that was missing for a long time was actually one that was well-loved and fondly remembered? I ask only because I find it funny if it were that all forgotten software was forgotten just for lack of player interest on release, and that the games, shunned at release, suddenly became valuable not for their quality, but for their rarity caused by no one wanting them. Like imagine what it must feel like to make a game that nobody cares about beyond the fact that no one cared about them.

IIRC the french dude who runs the Game Preservation Society made the argument that at one point, Japan too didn't give a shit about their cultural output, and also made parts of it illegal (ie. ukiyo-e prints). People from other places helped to take it out of Japan and preserve it until the country came around to appreciating their own cultural works. The french guy saw Japanese computer games in a similar light, that they would someday be appreciated where currently they are mostly seen as old junk.

I think it is just a focus on Japan such that the Korean scene was ignored. There are at least the specialized interest magazines and books in Japan for games, but not really as large a publishing scene about games in Korea and China. Possibly due to culture and political reasons gaming was not marketed as much. I think of the stereotypical Korean story where kids are to study all the time, gaming is superfluous, and so they convinced parents computers have the functionality to help with studies, and so Starcraft was popular.

Probably not in this case, but in some cases there's degrees of trust needed to acquire these things. Especially among Japanese people it seems. Japanese don't seem to value preservation as much and seem OK with things being ethereal. Atleast when it comes to games it seems... I think it's that emulation never really had the same impact over there. Nor did piracy/filesharing I think.

Anyway, from what I've been told, the scene for acquiring rare JP game prototypes involves building years of trust among collectors. In the arcade prototype PCB world, it involves trusted individuals who collect their own rare boards, and will do brief swaps with a collector so they can each play the games. That individual would then have a short amount of time to try to dump the game and preserve it before he has to return it to get his rare (and often times more valuable) board back. If his dump ever appeared online, then that would break the trust he built up. Because of this, I've been told there are actually several rare and sought after prototypes out there preserved, but they may not be ever released for quite some time, if ever.

Also the Japanese collectors of prototypes and rare games never want to circulate their images or roms, but they may back up and preserve their games solely as a way of protecting their investment.

Anyway, this is all just stuff I've been told. Alot of these rare PC and doujin games are fucking expensive as hell and never undumped. If I was rich, I'd definitely make it a life goal to preserve as much of Japanese PC gaming as possible.

The Japanese themselves have a mindset of complete ephemerality. They live on a dogshit, highly active fault-line, and their national symbol is a volcano that is known to be active and could erupt any day.

This is why they make houses out of paper, and design them to only last 20 years. They have no space, so they don't horde anything, second-hand shops in Japan do a crazy amount of business because of how much stuff people resell. The Japanese idea of preservation is garbage like the virtual console or NES mini, updated versions of a tiny selection of games that work on modern hardware.
