If you're not into JRPG or want to get into them, this is the best bet. Also SMBRPG is a pretty good one. If you want a fun but not 500 hour level, try shining force 1 or 2 (2 is more jrpg like IMO).

Earthbound and M&L games. I'd recommend some older FF games if you got the patience for them. However the two games I listed have the best balance of fun combat and story imo. They're also good launching points for newbies. From there you can branch out more into other games if you want.

Grandia, Skies of Arcadia and Breath of Fire 4 for a sense of adventure / exploring an interesting world.
Dragon Quest 7 3DS version and Bravely Default for a huge amount of separate vignettes where you end up experiencing and changing them all through multiple iterations (BD does this a bit repetively, mostly due to budget issues), maybe Chrono Trigger too for babby's first hyper-polished version of it.

Other classics with their own strengths include Final Fantasy 5 (most fun pure "gameplay"-centric FF title imo), Final Fantasy 7 (you either love it or hate it, it's very much not a forgettable game), Suikoden 2 (not-Water Margin the Game), Wild Arms (a competent early PS1 title that's more loveable than you'd think) and Tactics Ogre: Let's Cling Together (Yugoslav Wars with a fantasy tinge).
