It featured Dan Castellaneta as the voice of Earthworm Jim:

And it was pretty weird.

Could we have a retro videogame media thread? Cartoons, anime, movies, OAV's, music, comics, manga, and stuff like that.

I remember there being two different Sonic cartoon series on at the same time. Both were made by DiC, but one had a darker tone. The darker Sonic series had this whole freedom fighter storyline, while the other kidd-ier cartoon series had Sonic telling kids not to talk to strangers. Both series had Jaleel White as the voice of Sonic.

Also, speaking of later 90's cartoon series based on cartoons, there was a Sam and Max: Freelance Police series based on the Lucas Arts game:

This show only lasted for a season.

Sonic The Hedgehog: TAS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMa9Iot1Ves
This series was made for ABC in the United States. I think the Archie comics series was based on this cartoon. Also Robotnik was surprisingly dark with no comedic elements.

Then there is this series called Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x2NbK8IOpQ
This is a 'kid friendly version', I guess. Also the source for many YTP videos.

There is also a third Sonic cartoon series. Sonic Underground.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyGjgOwZo1M
This series only aired in Canada and the UK, and was like some weird Sonic fan fiction. It was fucking weird. Jaleel White was also the voice of Sonic in this series too.

EWJ cartoon was awesome, but only lasted 2 seasons. All the Mario cartoons were garbage, but the live action Super Show parts were actually acceptable material, usually due to the celeb guest. AoStH and SatAM were both OK for different reasons, Sonic Underground was a trashfire, never saw the OVA. Double Dragon was fucking horrible. Captain N was painfully bad, and the Zelda cartoon it came with was only good as meme material. Mega Man was amazingly bland for a show about robots fighting each other. Never watched Q-Bert, Pac-man, Carmen Sandiego, or the Saturday Supercade.

The Maniac Mansion live action show was absolute shit that had only names in common with the games. Fucking Eugene Levy ruined it. The live action game show version of Carmen Sandiego on PBS was the hypest shit ever. They actually managed to make a decent edutainment show out of a decent edutainment game series. Too bad they had to shut it down since they forgot to make participants sign liability waivers and that one kid slipped and hurt himself during the final game.

Yeah, though I honestly don't remember much about the cartoon in terms of quality or plots beyond knowing that I probably watched it a time or two. I was certainly an EWJ fan as a kid, I probably still have some of the toys somewhere.

Watching it just now, I can say that the opening was certainly better animated than I would've expected. I might go back and give the series a watch, the humor of the games is certainly still appealing to me.

We got Sonic Underground here in the US. It was in kind of a weird place (being a late 90s Sonic cartoon), so many of the people that watched the cartoons as kids didn't really "gel" with watching Sonic in their late teens.
I liked the slapstick Sonic cartoon. It was super nutty and like watching the 3 stooges except with a robot that has an asscrack.

Playmates was one of the groups that invested in Earthworm Jim. They had their own toy-line and were the ones who produced the cartoon series to advertise the toyline.

The cartoon was alright. It didn't quite have the same sense of humor as the first two games, but was decent as far as saturday morning cartoons go.

The Carmen game show kept going for three seasons after that injury regardless (lasted five in total). What killed it was budget cuts, as PBS couldn't keep affording to foot the bill for prizes.

They tried to keep it going with "Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego", but both the budget and the talent was lacking and it ended after only two seasons.

Combined with the other consolation prizes, costumes, animations, and the cost of the set itself, it adds up, especially for public-television.

Where in Time had to downgrade the prizes to textbooks and home computers, and even that apparently was a strain, which is likely why they had to rig the bonus round to be nigh-unwinnable.

I didn't consider it retro enough, but it is from 2003. Dear fucking god.

I also have to bring up Sonic OVA from 1999, or Sonic: the Movie as it was called in the west. This was a weird take on Sonic, Very anime. I say weird because this came out around the same time as Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. But the OVA was based on elements of Sonic CD, bits of Sonic 3 and Knuckles and even has references to the DiC Sonic TAS from the '90s. It is an interesting take. Plus it has some pretty good animation and artwork.

I meant Sonic was a bit of a tarnished brand name that was absent for a whole console generation. Yeah, the OVA was released to match up with the game Sonic Adventure, but I mean, it was also put out to help reignite the Sonic brand too.

When I think of mid to late '90s cartoons based on video games, so many bad ones come to mind, like those USA network shows. Street Fighter, MegaMan, Darkstalkers, etc. Even the Mortal Kombat cartoon series kinda sucked. The first Pokemon cartoon aired in 1997, which is pretty crazy considering how long that show stayed on the air.

Earthworm Jim was one of the few rare ones that was actually alright.

Super Mario Bros. Super Show was made to promote Super Mario Bros. 2 in the west. Plus Zelda 2 was new at the time too, so the Super Show had Mario and Zelda cartoons to promote those. Plus the cartoon showed more Mario 2 enemies, even though Bowser was the main protagonist.

And then Super Mario Bros. 3 came out after and was included with Captain N: The Game Master. Captain N: The Game Master was pretty awful, but it has a weird charm to it. Super Mario Bros. 3 was the only part I liked. The show was just more of the previous DiC Mario cartoon. I don;t remember if this was better.

I liked the supershow better for using Mario and co. in so many different scenarios, kind of like how Mario was originally intended to be a versatile multi purpose character that could appear in anything.

Mario 3 and World kind of suffered for trying to stick closer to the games since they didn't travel as much and were more limited in what they could do. Also those fucking musical numbers that were sung by what I can only assume to be a horde of gremlins were really bad.

To be honest, Doug doesn't really have much to do with the EWJ cartoon series. It's not like he wrote any of the episodes or anything. Earthworm Jim has always been a strong part of my identity and my family. When it first was first released in 1994 it was an obsession. Everything in the house hold was "Groovy" this and "Aaayow!" that. We even named our cat "Evil" like the cat from the game. Then in 1995, you can imagine that we were blown away when there was a TELEVISION series. "Earth Worm Jim! Through soil he did crawl!" we would all sing in unison. My aunt even started calling Homer from the Simpsons "Yellow Worm" because they had the same voice actor. All my Earth Worm Jim memorabilia has been building up over the years and with the advent of the internet I was able to connect to other fans of the franchise. I love everything about his cool, collected personality but also quite erratic (lol, it wouldn't be a funny show without it!) and his suit and laser gun really are the ticket! I wonder what would happen if he wasn't a worm? Haha, I don't want to imagine!

>I have a hard time believing that, it looks extremely western.

The character designs are westren and most of the storyboards too, but back in the 1980's it wasn't uncommon for animation studios to farm out their animation to Japanese studios. Real Ghostbusters, Thundercats, the first season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, even many episodes of Batman: The Animated Series were animated in japan. Though it wasn't uncommon for western animation studios open up animation houses in countries like South Korea or Singapore, just for the cheap labour. So some cartoons would outsource some episodes to japan, some to South Korea and so forth and just juggle between studios.

Ghost Busters was made by Filmation, based on a kids TV show from the 1970's. Filmation realized that they had their own "Ghost Busters" property and rushed out this series to cash in on the film:

>Imagine being so desperately in need of characters that you have pick a random generic basketball player from fucking Arch Rivals and A CAR to make a cartoon of videogames.

BigFoot was literally there to advertise this game.

The SWAT guy is Max Force from Williams Electronics NARC. The arcade game is an awesome late 80's run and gun game, that kinda like Double Dragon with machine guns with Eugene Jarvis paced gameplay style (Like Robotron 2084 or Smash TV). I always thought it was that quintessential "late 80's/ early 90's arcade game" you saw in movies and TV shows and stuff. Rare ported the NES version for Acclaim in 1990. Acclaim puts 'Max Force' into their Captain N knockoff to advertise the NES game. Which is kinda awesome and weird. Also he looks a bit like Peter Venkman from the Real Ghostbusters cartoon.

And then there us Kuros from Wizards & Warriors. I've never played that game, but I use to see that cartridge in rental stores everywhere and in a few bargain bins.

Kwirk is a character from a GameBoy game made by Atlus and published by Acclaim. It's this weird puzzle game where you turn blocks. It is also on the PCEngine.

The Basketball guy is named Tyrone and he is an actual playable character from the game Arch Rivals. Which is an arcade game that was developed by early Midway and the game was basically the prototype to NBA Jam. Acclaim ported the game to the NES in 1990.

Acclaim were advertising their 1990 game line-up with PowerTeam. It's like they handed the producers a bunch of their properties at random, and just said "oh do something with these!".

Definitively Acclaim. They literally looked at Captain N and the Game Masters and said "we should do that with our games". This kind of thing was the norm for cartoons in the late 80's and early 90's.(Image related) Ironically Valiant Comics was owned by Acclaim between 1994 to 2004.

Steve Purcell, created Sam & Max as a comic series before he was hired with LucasArts. he was an animator/artist at Lucas Arts and they decided to turn his Sam and Max characters into a game. The cartoon probably wouldn't exist without the popularity of the first game. So there is that.

The cartoon was made by Nelvava studios in Canada, but it is a good adaption of his characters. Has good animation. Steve Percell even wrote some of the episodes.

The Sonic OAV series was definitely inspired by Sonic CD the most. I could imagine that the animated sequences in the Sega CD game were what promoted Sega to make an anime. Sonic uses the super peelout from Sonic CD and Metal Sonic makes an appearance. But there are also some Sonic 3 tie-ins with Knuckles and his strange Australian accent. Also, the OAV has redesigned SWATbots which made their first appearance in the Sonic SATAM cartoon and Archie comics. This one draws a lot from the games.

And speaking of OVA,s there is also the Super Mario Bros OVA from 1986:
