His good videos are fun, but a lot of his more recent ones feel uninspired, and it's clear he never really wanted to become known solely for this series, his interest lying more in movies than in video games.

Also, his fanbase is mostly cancer, especially the dumbass kids that think his criticism of games they've barely heard of is supposed to be 100% genuine.

I like the first 100 or so AVGN episodes, and the older movie reviews, but that's where I draw the line. My vision of Cinemassacre was tainted after watching some of the newer videos after not having paid attention to the channel in a while. James and Mike fucking suck ass at video games and only play the same 15 nes games over and over again, and when they finish those they play rom hacks of those games. Just recently they played the original Resident Evil 2 and all Mike could fucking talk about was easter eggs in A Link To The Past, and James just rambled on and on about horror movies and how tank controls ruined the series for him. Half of James and Mike Mondays is literally just rom hacks and "challenges" centering around Super Mario Bros. and Zelda. Mike posts his dick on the internet and censors comments that talk negatively about the channel, no matter how true they are. Also apparently screenwave (those fat lard asses that spontaneously appeared out of nowhere and are in like every fucking video now) is entirely in charge of writing episodes of AVGN and the other series on the channel which is why everything is so uninspired and "fake" feeling. James just sits there now and nods, with the occasional sperging about some old horror movie only 3 people watched that has nothing to do with the conversation at hand. Mike has no presence in the majority of the shit screenwave is in (which is the majority of content besides James & Mike Mondays), which really tells you something. When Mike "10 Inches" Matei is distancing himself from the spotlight you know shit has gotten bad.

I enjoy his videos an rewatch them sometimes. He basically pioneered the "angrily critique classic games with profanity" hyperbole. Generally speaking, he cares about what's he's talking about and has decent screen presence.

To those who don't know, the folks from Screenwave Media (Ryan's company; you may know Ryan from the Mike & Ryan videos, but he's also been webmaster cinemassacre.com for at like a decade now) write and edit the AVGN episodes now. James writes and edits some he's personally invested in (he did EarthBound himself for example, which is part of why it's by FAR the best AVGN ep of 2018) but the guys you see in the Rental Reviews do the writing and editing of AVGN now.

If you don't believe me, one of the guys on Rental Reviews confirmed this himself (complete with a pic of himself for verification) on /tv/. (Sorry that whoever compiled this pic left out context; search post numbers on /tv/ archive for that.)

If you look carefully, when the avgn inspired reviewers started to come out, one if them would review a thing first and the rest would take that judgment as set on Stone and never try to have a different opinion, to the point that most of them feel like forced memes desu. A lot of NES games are trash. Especially if you grew up with Mario 1,2,3 and Zelda 1,2. Everything else pales in comparison and doesn't feel like a complete or polished game. There are lots of good games but so much trash and a lot of his critiques are valid. It's best to play the game yourself or watch the video after playing the game so you can laugh about it.

His older videos were fucking gold. I'm not really as big of a fan for his newer vids but every once in awhile he delivers with some of that same greatness.

More recently I've been a fan of the vids when he more or less breaks character and actually reviews games. For example I really liked his review of Earthbound and I was interested to see what his thoughts were of it.

I also like his older movie reviews of the 80s-90s. I was barely old enough to go see some of them when they were newer, so I barely have any foundation of them in the first place but I do like his genuine enthusiasm and his talking points for his reviews.

The problem with AVGN is that he embraced all the meme aspects of "The Nerd". Or, I guess you could say, "The Nerd" became a standalone character.

In the early days of AVGN, the character was much more believable, and you'd almost be left to wonder whether or not he was acting or if he was legitimately just some pissed off nerd. Eventually, he got popular, and people started to latch on to the more extreme elements of his character--the angry outbursts, the tirades about shit and piss, the silly gags. Whereas these elements once felt fairly organic in his videos, he took them and exaggerated them to even greater extremes, and they became the defining elements for the character.

A friend put on the Polybius episode while I was at his house. Something about the "The location is..." and the blank eyes really freaked me out. I have no idea why, it's been nearly a week now and I still can't get it out of my head. I think it struck a deep rooted childhood trauma-nerve or something.
Other than that though it was really well done. Good sense of suspense and even though half way through I could tell there would be a jumpscare it still got me.
As for his other episodes, some are okay, some make me cringe and some make me exhale slightly harder than usual. I'm not really into Youtube at all though.

Some of his videos he's made within the last year have actually be pretty nice surprises with how good they were and they felt more genuine than some of the stuff he's put out in the last four or so years. His problem is he pushed it too hard and a lot of the jokes and whatnot felt forced. It was much more deadpan in his first 100, and some of those episodes weren't even funny, just extremely informative (my favorite videos are still his hardware videos, like all the crazy Nintendo controller addons, Gameboy addons, Pong consoles, etc).
I think James is best with a bit of...laziness in his videos? Like he's just a nerd making videos, trying to "warn" others about shitty games (that nobody but him cares about). Some of his earliest stuff, like TMNT, had this sort of raw feeling about it that he's never really recaptured.

Honestly, when I went back to them, they just weren't funny now that I'm older (began watching him in high school, the same school that me and Sean Fausz both went to. That was a mind fuck when I saw him in one of those AVGN/NC crossovers back in 2009ish).

But to iterate what the last anon said, the Double Dragon review is still pretty funny and honestly his best video IMO. The Room review can give me a chuckle here and there. Outside of those two, the others ones have not aged well at all.
