Hey! this is my first post in this board.
I recently finished a game called Terranigma, it was the first real RPG game that i played from start to finish.

And i have to say, it's probably the best game i ever played. i have been missing out on RPGs all of this years, but i'm not too upset about it because i will get to experience them now using emulators

Sure. i absolutely love the action combat system in this game and the fact you can JUMP unlike alot of older RPGs (and Zelda)

I really love the plot in this game and the concept of resurrecting the world from scratch. also the plot twist is absolutely god tier and explains the entire game beautifully, and the ending was extremely heart-wrenching and i ended up crying.

The enemy design, the soundtrack, the graphics, its just an amazing experience overall. the game is not perfect (the magic system could have been better for example) but they did an amazing job with almost everything in this game.

This is the RPGS i downloaded to emulate so far and plan to play: (i will not count Zelda games because i know some people don't consider it an RPG)

Dragon Quest 3
FFVI
Chrono Trigger
EarthBound
Secret Of Mana
Sieken Densetsu 3
Terranigma
Illusion of Gaia
Star Ocean
Super Mario RPG
Phantasy Star IV
Golden Sun
Mother 3
Paper Mario
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy VII
Parasite Eve
Vagrant Story
Xenoblade Chronicles
Final Fantasy X
Shin Megami Tensei - Nocturne
Persona 4

also technically i tried to play the Kingdom Hearts games some time ago but i quitted early because the RPCS3 emulation was way too buggy :\

It's not. It's an action adventure, and not even a really good one at that.

The graphics and music are absolutely amazing, and they are consistently of a very high quality. The more empty environments are not only essential to the story, the feeling of lifelessness and solitude they bring is absolutely god tier, like the place where you get to the real world for the first time.

In regards to the gameplay, i strongly disagree with you there again. i think the enemy design is fantastic, and the fact you can actually JUMP unlike many other action rpgs adds a ton of depth to the gameplay.

Lastly, Terranigma is definitely an action RPG. you don't need to have turn-based combat for a game to be an RPG

I felt the same way when I completed this game. Actually I felt this way after entering the overworld for the first time. Everything about this game just felt so good and well done. I have to admit I suffered to Bloody Mary and had to look up a guide. Oh and I also had an issue in the zombie area finding the door that is super hard to notice.

My biggest fuck up (I've only played this game once) was not knowing how the magic rock things worked. I thought you had a limited number of rocks and that was the limited number of spells you could cast (i.e. if you have 6 rocks you can cast 6 spells and then no more after that until you find more). So I ended up saving all of them until the last boss fight and to my surprise you cannot use magic rocks in the final boss fight. If I do another playthrough I will make sure to use them properly.

My complaints about the game are the obvious lack of weapons, the lack of Chapters (This is a personal preference, I like the begining how the chapters were split up nicely but then the last one is so long) and after Bloody Mary you don't have much fighting to do, it's mostly story driven. It really feels like the first half of the game is the best. I also thought it was pretty awesome when you can talk to animals and the bird takes you to the north pole. Then when you can't talk to animals you talk to him again and he takes you to the north pole for a treasure.

You might enjoy the other two games in this 'trilogy', Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer.

Sucks about all the trolls in this thread though...

>> No.5364851

Combat is really slippery in this game, status ailments are annoying, it becomes less interesting when humans return, then it gets really weird towards the end. Good ending segment and credits though.

>who gives a fuck if i like having a username?
Because the desire to be identified or have some form of consistent notoriety/recognition where it's unnecessary shows that you are a miserable attention-whoring cunt and people don't want to engage with that. There are tripfags in places like /crt/ where it's helpful to know who some certain people are because they're particularly helpful. But if you're tripcoding all the time in every thread for no reason then it's just pathetic and distracting.

>> No.5365850

>>5365828
Actually fuck it, this is what I think about Terranigma:

It's a good game with a simplistic battle system, but it works when you get the hang of it to the point it never really gets boring or repetitive. So it lacks complexity, you get a few spells but mostly it's just using your goddamn weaponry. One issue: The leveling system makes it so at times you'll feel either under or overpowered, nothing in between.

Bloody Mary is one of the things everyone remembers from this game because it's a boss that is quite difficult at the point where you fight it, and then the rest of the game feels so much fucking easier. Not balanced difficulty wise. However after doing that it feels pleasant, like you kinda got rid of that fucking fiend that didn't let you enjoy the game.

Some things are not too obvious, I had two particular problems: One was throwing the three stones down that fucking pit at the beginning, which took me a while to actually figure out. The other one, a door that undead people would go through and I couldn't notice it existed, so I kept running in circles.

I liked the story quite a bit, it's pretty memorable and original in comparison to anything else really. Like I said I'm a brainlet so I can't overanalyze the later parts of the game but it was pretty interesting. It's weird, because the first time I tried this game I assumed that the dark world was pretty much the whole game (mainly because I never really got past that). It opening up the way it did changed my perception. Side content was nice too. Going around the map never felt unpleasant.

And the music gets praised a lot, because it's honestly good. I liked this game a lot.

I do really like the jump attacks but then I think about something like A Link to The Past and how you can use boomerangs, arrows and the hookshot and it feels like they could have added something else to it. I don't mind staying with a spear the entire time but maybe have 1 spear that's easy to get, 1 that drops from enemies with better stats, 1 that you find in a dungeon that has less power but magic abilities like fire or ice and do that for each of the spear upgrades you would normally get instead of just railroading you into each new spear. A good variety of weapons that aren't just bought in shops is basically what I mean.

I also didn't realize that Ark goes back to his village before it dissapears. I just assumed he chose to leave the overworld or something I dno, I didn't think too hard but now I wanna play it again.

He does. But none of the people he meets there are even "real" people (the ones Ark knew from before were just made out of crystal blue like he is, so it's debatable if they ever were "real" people; anyway, those are gone when you reach crysta. They turn into souls/glowing orbs when you talk to any of them upon your return, and crysta is empty right after Arks defeats Dark Gaia. Only when Light Gaia tells you she grants you one last happy time do they return. It's all fake, if not an outright illusion.
Not even Elle is alive at that point, the one you meet in the dream is just that, a dream. She sacrificed herself earlier, after all. How does she talk to you at the very end when Ark goes to sleep, you ask? The same way Meilin's mother talked to Meilin while being in the process of reincarnation. I think only that bit at the end is the real Elle talking, and the one you meet in Ark's last day is fake.
As for the file name, I always left it at "Ark". In fact, I chose Ark as a name for other games with protagonists that can be named after playing Terranigma.

Okay so I finally figured out how the Magirock system works after looking through 3 guides online and finally coming to a forum. The rocks are just Mana Points essentially and after using a spell you are given Magirocks back and then you go to the store and exchange them for spells and then use those spells and get the rocks back etc... Everybody I found online was just as confused as me thinking you had a finite amount of magic spells and didn't realize you got the rocks back after using a spell.

Hopefully this increases the amount of fun I will have on this playthrough.

WTF was up with all that Astarica business?

I took what you said and thought I had it figured out when I started the game. Then the guy in the shop told me that they act as bottles to contain magic. So I figured I knew what I was doing. Then I used the spell and got really confused about how to reload the spell. That's when I did my google search and came up with other confused people and I didn't notice the money cost next to each spell which also threw me off about what was happening. This whole explanation by the guy in the shop would have made more sense if he said "After casting a spell the magick rock is returned to your inventory to buy more spells" or if they just used a Mana system lol.

But so far I'm having fun actually using these spells on some bigger enemies in the towers of the underworld.

I see. Yeah, having to re-buy spells isn't the most intuitive thing.
I once tried incorporating magic into my playthrough. Was really fun in the beginning using Ice Rings as a projectile attack. But at some point availability was a problem (can't buy every spell in every magishop), and the damage was not so impressive after some time.
Plus, you could only carry nine of those so you had to use them sparingly. If only that number had been a little higher.
Some of the full-screen spells are kind of fun to use, but most of them have such long animations. Also, enemies have weaknesses to certain elements so your damage may wildly vary based on that. Only way to find out is to experiment, but it never felt necessary to go into a dungeon, see what works, go out to buy more of that spell and back in again.

Nobody knows exactly, and I hear it isn't much clearer or at all clearer in the original Japanese version, either.
Probably an event from a past incarnation of Light Ark and his companions (Fyda thought she knew Ark from somewhere when they first met, same with Royd).
Whether it has any relation to the main plot or whether it's simply a commentary about human lust for power and the lengths people go to to achieve said power is not known, either. Probably the latter in any case, but it's hard to draw a connection to the main plot beyond pure speculation.
One theory I read that's extremely far out there was that Elle becomes a god in that scene, i.e. Dark Gaia. I don't think it's supported by anything.
Also, the whole "go without food for a year and achieve a higher state of being if you survive" thing may or may not be a reference to self-mummification practices in Buddhism:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu
>The practitioners of sokushinbutsu did not view this practice as an act of suicide, but rather as a form of further enlightenment.
Though seing how Astarica is found in South America, maybe there's a corresponding practice from a South American culture that may serve as an inspiration for the scene. I'm not aware of one.

Hey OP! Welcome to /vr/ =) *smiles*

Are you playing on an original Nintendo SNES, or emulating on your computer?

I ask because if you're emulating you should fuck the hell off, because us frequenters tend to have a policy that you should only use original hardware for an authentic experience, otherwise die

In the vision Ark sees, he takes a goblet and collapses after drinking its contents, with Elle chuckling to herself "the end of human life is trite". But we don't know know exactly whether Ark passively watches the same things Light Ark did or whether it's an interactive sort of dream where he makes his own choice to take the goblet.
Light Ark dying there by taking a wrong goblet would mean he didn't fight in the final battle at Dryvale, but maybe he chose the correct goblet and fought evil Elle later, then.
Elle from that vision being an avatar of Dark Gaia is certainly a possibility either way.
And that picture is the most horrifying rendition of Elle I have seen.

Found the scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDuNp-PWbrc

Ark recognizes Meilin and the skater kid (who oddly have their modern clothes, but so does everyone else), so the Ark you control is likely DA.

It would be odd that LA would be there at that point, it's not like Elle did anything yet that would require LG to step in and send LA. The barfing animation suggests it's the wrong goblet, which reinforces the character not being LA. Seems more like a way to exit the vision through the same way you entered.

I just played and beat this game a few weeks ago, after beating Terranigma for the first time a month prior.

I honestly had more fun playing it than I did with Terranigma.

The story, dialogue, and characters were great...but you need to know moonrunes to play it until a translation comes out.

>Ark recognizes Meilin and the skater kid
Yeah, I guess from his reaction to them and Terranigma being a video game, and this not being a cutscene it's more likely the "interactive dream" thing rather than passively seeing LA's memories.
The modern clothes are just laziness, the game reuses so many sprites. Though that might also be because the resurrection scenes in chapters 1 and 2 supposedly take up half the cartridge's memory rather than outright laziness.
>It would be odd that LA would be there at that point, it's not like Elle did anything yet that would require LG to step in and send LA
Well, the reason he enters the sanctum is because Lord Meila wants a skilled warrior to go after the priests Roy and Fyda didn't return from checking on Elle.
As to why LA would be there for Meila to be able to ask him in the first place, it wouldn't necessarily be at LG's behest. Perhaps he was only chosen as agent of LG after this incident since DG made a move.
LA could have just been a warrior from Astarica (in which case Meila explains its customs to the player, not LA who would of course know them), or a wandering warrior from somewhere else.
As an aside, the hero's arms were said to have been found by Columbus on his voyages. I always considered the possibility that he found them in South America before bringing them to Storkolm.

I just beat the Ra Tree and using magic helped out a bit when I was getting swarmed by enemies but I'll see how useful magic is in the Bird area.

I feel really really bad because this is my third playthrough (My first two being over 10 years ago) and on every playthrough I have had to reference a guide for one of the Towers in the underworld. My first time it was for Tower or 2 to go out the window. The second time was for that same tower when playing with my friend and we got stuck.
Now on my third playthrough I didn't want to use a guide but I got stuck on tower 5. I spend 20 minutes talking to everybody in the village and trying to secretly enter the tower to avoid getting paralized and pushed back out but I had to look at a guide. Turns out I missed The magic thread from the previous tower and there was only one really vague hint from the fortune teller that didn't really help.

Was anybody else able to beat the underworld without looking at a guide? I feel like if I played this as a kid I would have got stuck really early and not had a fun time. Hopefully the rest of the game I can handle.

I found the crystal thread in tower 4 before completing it without any trouble on my first playthrough, but I didn't play the game as a kid.
When you do find it, it's pretty obvious what to do with it. And anyone who can't connect the dots will progress by talking to everybody at that point.
Though if you are having trouble here, have fun in Louran and definitely pay attention to details when getting there.

>> No.5375526

Like I said, I have already beaten the game twice but for some reason I keep forgetting these little details. I don't even know how I explored everywhere in Tower 4 without finding that thread. After looking up how to get into Tower 5 I went back to Tower 4 and found the thread right away. I know the other point in the game I got stuck at was the zombie door and being able to deal enough damage to Bloody Mary. Other than those couple spots I think I should be fine. It just feels bad knowing I had to look up a guide to beat a game as an adult and on top of that I already beat this game twice before haha. I think they could have nudged you a little more at the beginning of the game or gave you a vague hint when you enter the tower.

>> No.5375536

>>5375526
For the beginning part, the manual actually tells some things needed to progress like getting past the entrance in Tower 5. I guess back in the day you were expected to read those so the game itself isn't more specific about it to guide you. Sucks if you emulate it decades later and don't think of this.
And the German version even came with a 75 page guide for the game.

>> No.5375547

>>5375536
I remember buying illusion of Gaia on eBay back in 2003 and the seller said it came with the 'Game Guide' but it was the same size as a game manual so I figured it was a translation issue. I was about 3/4 of my way through the game and figured I would glance at the instruction manual and wondered why it was so thick. It actually was a game guide and it blew my mind. The whole time I was thinking the seller of the item referred to the game manual as the game guide when it was me who was being stupid lol. I made sure to read the guide after beating the game to see if I missed anything, which I did.

>> No.5375556

>>5375547
Oh right, that one had a full guide in the small instruction booklet. And since basically the only thing you have to do to get 100% is collecting all red jewels, it's basically a 100% guide.
Unlike that German Terranigma game guide I mentioned which only tells you the basics to get through the game.

Is there a translation issue with this game? I noticed the plant area is called EveGreen instead of EverGreen which would make more sense to me but maybe it's intentional.

Wait, what? Never noticed that.
Anyway, many names are cut short or abbreviated, especially for overworld locations because of a character limit. So you'll see Grecliff instead of Great Cliff, or go through the Taklama desert instead of the Taklamakan desert.
Apart from that the translation is mostly very literal from what I hear.

Okay this makes more sense. I just thought it looked like they could fit that 'R' in there but it might have been too tight to do it. I also didn't think anything of GreCliff and thought maybe at most it was Grey Cliff because it's a rock and it's grey/gray. Interesting.
