Doom is having a bit of a revival right now. Ther'es several major projects in the work:

I read this somewhere outside of /vr/ the other day. Looking forward to playing it and I hope the community response is positive.

I much prefer the PS score. Its atmospheric.

The music puts me to sleep. Would be good for a horror game, but not in Doom.

It's good music, and even fits the game more than the original. Doom is not an "action" game. You really spend more time exploring and searching. The music fits a kind of tense, anything could be around the corner feeling.

Like I said, sleep inducing. Technically proficient ambient stuff but it feels wrong in a game where I can run so fast, I can catch my own rockets.

Vanilla Doom was different from what you play today.

Ironically the most popular Doom sourceport (GZDoom) actually disables wallrunning by default, making it less fast than the original.

One day I would like to take doom in a different direction and make it a bit like the novels. I have a feeling the game would play like stalker or systemshock. Where doom guy would eat and sleep in an elevator, sneak into bases with his trusty handgun. Applying his space age medicine to his hell ravaged body, rubbing that burn cream over his charred flesh, impaling himself with massive syringes and pumping that warm rush of medicinal sustenance into his body that would make a lesser man vomit without control. Doom guy would light cigars off the red hot barrel of his chaingun before dumping it and marking the location. Then slowly pulling out a black burlap satchel with a red cross, opening it up to a massive vial of obsidian ichor and stabbing himself with it. His whole world turning into a dizzying mist of red with strange shadows, moving around on all cylinders while using his rifle webbing to tie his knife into his gripping hand. Slamming that shard of cold steel into mass after screaming mass, taunting, fighting and subduing each of them before drifting back to reality and seeing about 3 barons of hell, 4 pinkies and 2 imps cut to pieces.

I wonder if Doom would have been the same sensational success if id software had followed the original design document more closely...

>> No.5358209

Likely no. What Tom Hall was doing was writing Half-Life before there was a half-life. A strongly cinematic story driven linear first person shooter. ID made the right call to make what amounts to next level W3D with demons and sci-fi. I do think axing Tom Hall was a dick move though. So he doesn't gel well with one project so he's gone forever? Come on. ID seemed like a pit of sharks back then.

Axing Tom Hall and John Romero was part of their downfall. Imagine if those guys were still at ID in high positions? ID would still be a creative powerhouse.

>> No.5358271

>>5358209
Indeed, Romero would have been a great creative director but from what I understand he became too much of a disruptive influence on the rest of the team. To cut him out completely (including royalties on legacy releases he himself had been co-creator on) seemed ultra harsh.

Tom Hall ended up making Rise of the Triad. It was a shit game similar to LameDuke. That would have been the final result of Doom with him as a lead.

>It's good music,
I disagree, it's almost all just repetitive ambient noise with no melody or beat to speak off, it's boring as fuck.

>and even fits the game more than the original.
No it doesn't.

>Doom is not an "action" game.
Yes it is. You just have to look at Thy Flesh Consumed, Doom 2, TNT Evilution, and Plutonia, to really see the good action.
Oh wait, all of those are gimped and neutered for the Playstation ports, so you don't get to actually fully appreciate all they have to offer.

>You really spend more time exploring and searching.
Maybe if you can't navigate.

>The music fits a kind of tense, anything could be around the corner feeling.
Highly disagree, the slow and atmospheric themes of the original games blows all of PSX/N64 Doom's music out of the water.

These tracks are FAR better at building suspense and a sense of dread and foreboding, than anything of the PSX/N64's ambient tracks, on top of the original games also featuring higher tempo themes for maps where it's suited, creating more variety.

It's funny, according to the history books Tom Hall wanted Doom to be more story-driven. But then his game Rise Of The Triad is completely ridiculous & action-oriented and the manual literally says nobody cares about the story.

Rise Of The Triad is an objectively good game.

Though Tom Hall was lead dev, and you can see a lot of his influence in ROTT, I think a lot of the other guys factored in too (like Joe Siegler and Scott Miller), and a lot of its characteristics come from it being intended as a licensed Wolf3D sequel, then ID cancelling that, then Apogee retooling what they had to their own game, with nothing else to hold them back.
