The controllers are just really bad. It has a non-self centering analog stick which means it's super imprecise, and the circuit board for the buttons is extremely prone to failure and there's no signs at all of it happening, you can put one away in storage fully working, and when you pull it out a year later it doesn't work. The contacts just stop working and you have to take the whole thing apart and delicately clean it to have any hopes of it working. You can also rebuild them with replacement parts but the controllers are a pain in the ass to work with because of the complex design.

>> No.5343535

>>5343482
It was one of the first analog controllers around, predating the N64 controller by over a decade, but it was built really badly and would fail to recenter itself after an hour of play.

To milk people via accessories like rumble paks, VMUs, etc. It's like they saw the 64 controller and said "let's do that pak thingy but times two" (which might have been what really happened since the Saturn's wonderful 3D pad was a direct response to the 64's analog stick).

I love the DC but the VMU "bump" on the back hits my second finger. It's really uncomfortable and annoying. The analog triggers are actually sharp, so if you're playing something like Tony Hawk, where you use them to spin constantly, it will blister the hell out of your finger eventually. The stick being hard plastic is really bad about letting your thumb slip off, even with the plastic nubs which wear off surprisingly fast. Cord coming out of the bottom of the controller... ick, but it does have the "holder" slot so you can make it exit the front. The last complaint is there being only 4 face buttons. Sega should have went with 6 by default, especially since various street fighter and MvC were huge draws to the hardware.

Today I put a white PS4 replacement stick in my DC controller. You have to widen the plastic circle on the front to get full motion as the PS4 stick has a larger diameter than the DC. It feels damn good and no slippage. I used a white stick so it matches fairly well. I also used the worse condition controller I had since the plastic had to be removed. I hate doing destructive mods, but this works so much better than stock.

Since the controller is already modded, I think I'm going to try to wetsand the triggers to make them smooth, and I might try to cut plastic away from the VMU bump and fill it with bondo or epoxy or something. Hell, I may go nuts and mount micro switches in the buttons, but I doubt it since it's kind of hard to find ones that feel good on buttons that small.

This. The Dreamcast controller is the worst stock controller outside of those for the 5200 and CDi. The Dreamcast had such bad stock controllers that I had to get other controllers to make games play right. Spent almost as much on arcade sticks, light guns, keayboard+mouse, dance mats, maracas, twin sticks as the games, just to get them playable on the system. I haven't played any fishing games, but even those have their own controllers for the system. Dreamcast owners were fortunate that driving games even function with the stock DC pad, because there are no good steering wheels for the system.

Weirdly, I never had much trouble with any controller layout until the GBA SP. (The fact it wasn't very wide, and was too thin, plus the clicky d-pad and bad L and R buttons made me stick with my original GBA). Starting from NES, the only controllers I never had the chance to try were the Saturn ones, the non-default Dreamcast controllers, Gameboy Micro and Virtual Boy.

Also, the OG Dualshock controller had a great weight to it, and the PS2 controllers felt cheap and lightweight compared to them imo, but were functionally fine.

it doesn't just get me that sony made the perfect dpad with the vita and then went backwards to what the DS4 has, it's that they made fucking working protoypes of the DS4 with a vita dpad and then decided to change it.

Wait, I forgot, the Game Gear was pretty lame quality-wise. I'm not sure if I'm too keen on the Microswitched Neo Geo Pocket Color stick either, but that's because I'm always afraid of the switches wearing out. I also never got to try the PCEngine, 3DO, CDi, Neo Geo console, or non-VCS/2600 Atari controllers.

desu the only flaw with it was the joystick being a hard plastic piece of shit that would literally cut your hand if you used it too long, to the point where certain mario party games got banned and removed from later mario parties like 2/3

it's a pretty comfy controller otherwise

No. these were the big blunders.

1. Sega Megadrive 3 button controller
When Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat became mega-popular it was very frustrating to be saddled with the original 3 button controller. 6 button version eventually came out but it should have never been a problem to start with.

2. 3do 5 button controller
See above. And they should have known better by the time.

4. N64 analog stick wearing out in the USA
something to do with the way they are greased means NA N64 analog sticks become loose over time. Japanese versions don't have this problem.

3. Nintendo advantage + 90% of other arcade sticks not having real arcade parts in them.
It took a staggeringly stupid amount of time before true arcade-quality controls became something you could buy off of a department store shelf, with rare exceptions.

4. Mad Catz cable design.
Mad Catz had this habit of making controllers with a weak point right where it connected to the controller, resulting in frayed wires and a loose connection

5. PC Engine controller in general
Not enough buttons and stupid need for break-out box design.

I can't really think of any PlayStation game where the lack of analog control would be a complete game breaker in the way only having four buttons to work with was for SF2.

Maybe Gran Turismo, although I still played that game with the d-pad even after I owned a dual shock.

that was only problem with fighters, 80% games on snes or genesis dont use more than two-three buttons anyway. And those two games came out 3-4 years after genesis was released

Genesis came out BEFORE SF2 was even a thing in people's mind even in the US! so it would not make any sense to release it with more than 3 buttons on its controller. even nintendo was originally going for only 4 buttons in the SNES before creating the shoulder buttons, and even when it 1st came out in japan in late 1990 it felt like risky and excessive, but for better or for worse, ended up helping when SF2 was ported in 92.
