I'm fixing to play this. Is there any advantage to playing the PC version or is it okay going into the original ps1 version?

You have achievements on PC, but otherwise just play PS1. Have fun anon, and decide for yourself if you like this game or not. I recommend not looking for ways to break the game on your first playthrough.

Use GF abilities to turn items and cards into spells. It's the biggest beginner trap to not do this.

Get the RosesAndWine mod to change ALL the music to way better orchestrated versions.
Also, you have access to ChocoWorld, which was a PSmini thing. You just leave that running forever in the background and you get some insane items

Play the PSX game on PC with an emulator. Use Beetle HW core on retroarch, and turn on PGXP and go to internal res 4x+

Yes. The graphics are much cleaner in the PC version, but as >>5342675 said, the music files are from the original FFVIII PC version released in the 90's, not the amazing PS1 soundtrack. There's a mod called Roses and Wine that fixes it, but I had some really bad bugs that kind of ruined the experience for me. Sometimes two of the same track would play at the same time or just not play at all. It always seemed to happen in tense moments in the game which ruined the immersion. I could have just fucked up during the installation of the patch, but I don't know how I could have since it's just an .exe

I would recommend just emulating the PS1 version if you don't own it.
