I bought a PlayStation and Rebel Assault II with my own money I earned working weekends and after school. Played the shit out of and Interactive Demo Disk Volume 3. Got Crash 2 and Armored Core for Christmas. Watched WCW Nitro every monday night to see Sting drop in from the rafters to beat up 20 or so guys with nWo shirts while Hogan ran away shouting. In 1997, I bought a brand new Pioneer laserdisc player to collect anime on laserdisc as the idea of paying the same for tapes that could wear out bothered me. The player delivery was held up by the great UPS strike of 1997, and I was dying the whole time! Remember watching the anime week marathon on the SciFi (not SyFy, damnit!) channel around that time with great shit like GE999 movies - also waking up early for Saturday Anime there (Project A-KO, Akira, etc).

Ordered: Arcadia of My Youth and UY movies on LD direct from Animeigo. Got Bubblegum Crisis and UY Beautiful Dreamer from an LD store owned by Pioneer, and Battle Angel from a Saturday Matinee store in the mall.

20 years later I expanded the anime LD archive fucking massively when a glut of titles from, probably, dead otaku estates and shit found their way to eBay. Highlights like the Maison Ikkoku LD24 box that would have been $1600 in the 90s cost me just $50 like 5 years ago, and I amassed a pile of discs in lavish Japanese packaging that would have cost as much as a car when I first bought my LD player in 97 and it felt fucking good to amass this hoard.

eBay sellers got greedy and the pickings have dried up, but I recently got the Vampire Princess Miyu Integral LD box for $20 from fucking Goodwill, of all places, on their bay listings (weird to imagine the otaku that prob paid like $400 to import that back in the day, just to die or lose interest and have their prize scattered to the wind at some skid row store).

Continuing my LD collection has been a great way to bring back that initial sense of wonder this shit gave me when I started the archive in 97. Now I have a high end pioneer CLD-98 champagne colored player along with that original cld-606 I bought new.

You know, I've seen the LD go for some pretty high prices on occasion, so I would say it depends. UY movie 2 has some issues with the DVD and subsequent releases that make the LD valuable - it was filmed open matte, so any 16x9 transfer is cropping the full image. The original DVD screwed up the credit sequence as well.

That's what you get with a garbage player. The chroma noise is nonexistent with the high end players. Sure a HLD-X0 is pricey, but a CLD-97 or my 98 is right up there with a low noise S/N ratio.

There's a thing called collecting, and the packaging of 5 inch discs - the tissue paper thing inserts, recycle symbol hollowed cases - is an abomination after handling a thick cardboard Japanese LD sleeve with 12 inch original art commission for some "perfect collection" box.

Blu Ray surely beats LD in quality, no argument from me on that, but I'll just download the fucking rips because there is not much collectible left in that form factor next to the LD master race packaging.

Yeah it's an interesting debate. The same thing happened with the GE999 movies from the DVD up to the HD versions, so having the GE999 "Galaxy Box" LDs gives you that extra cropped information absent from every other release.

This can be a bad thing at times - in the Arcadia of My Youth LD, I spotted the unpainted margin of a background painting that would have been masked by a 16X9 aperture plate in the gate of the original 35mm projection.

I didn't have video games yet. I was probably going outside and playing with my friends, we made a raft one year and took it out on a pond near my house, that might have been '97. Before Pokemon hit life was a lot different for me. Extreme Dinosaurs is the only pop culture I remember from that time period.

I remember watching Rurouni Kenshin. There were commercials for Final Fantasy 7 which I was getting hyped for. I also remember raiding clearance sections and got a lot of SegaCD and Turbografx stuff.
