Even Breath of Fire had the characters from the game on the cover. The main protagonist isn't even on this cover, and I can't recognize anyone on the cover.

Suikoden came out before FFVII and the explosion in Square's popularity. It was one of the only RPGs on the PS at the time, that was where the money was in filling that void. I remember when I used to read EGM or whatever gaming magazine back then and this obscure game I never heard of named Suikoden won RPG of the year, and they wrote something along the lines of, "well there aren't really too many options here, but it's a good game in its own right..." Of course, there were other great options on other platforms but whatever, you get the point.

It's a very mediocre game. The level design is really poor. Usually mediocre JRPG's are saved by great music, but the music in Suikoden 1 and 2 is godawful. If you're gonna play Suikoden 2 at the very least play the PAL version as it fixes a lot of extreme issues and bugs from the NTSC version.
