Agreed. M64 has some absolutely top-tier music. It's almost a shame it was before vidya music started generally being orchestrated. The ending theme alone makes the playthrough worth it.

Maybe it's because, as you say, the game was minimalistic in terms of music otherwise? it's like BOTW, when you enter Hyrule Castle and hear an actual song for the first time since you started playing.
