anybody else feel like its pointless to own so many different games / consoles as one person? yeah its cool for some imaginary situation where someone comes over and says "hey do you have X game", but in reality you can only "git gud"at so many. mostly that shit just takes up space

I've been collection games in some external HDD for years. I don't even play most of the games. Just taking up terabytes of data.

I kind of got to that point so I sold off a lot of my games. I only kept childhood games (unless I hated them) and about 5-25 favorites on each system, but they had to be damn good to keep.

I would never get rid of original hardware as I use flash carts/drive emulators on them.

It's an ugly existential crisis that seems like it could strike people of my age who grew up at a time where video game playing could hit a level of interest rivaling any of the "traditional" hobbies like woodwork or working on one's car.

Sell your stuff if you are not comfortable with it anymore. Explore other activities.

It is. Even if you do have irl friends who care about old videogames, chances are if they come over to your place to play games you'll only play maybe a handful of them and the rest will just be you trying to show off to someone who you probably don't really need to impress in the first place. A sizable collection can be good for posting YouTube videos and social media photos to impress/brag to strangers on the internet, either to instill jealousy or make you seem like you know what you're talking about when it comes to le retro. So if you're some sort of e-celeb, a large collection can have a purpose of sorts, because you wonder if anybody care about Metal Jesus's videos if he didn't have a huge stash of games?

If looking at your own big collection doesn't make you happy and if you don't feel you have a use for having tons of random old games to play whenever, there really is not much of a point to collecting since most other people (who actually matter to you) won't care all that much.

I just collect stuff I like or have actually played. I don't care about games on systems I don't own or never played. Stuff before my childhood I just emulate.

>> No.5328686

i'm hitting a wall, im not an aaa collector, but as i get older am using it less and less or not using it at all
gonna start to get rid of it, but will keep 10% or so of it

heres what happens to me
1. Hear about cool game
2. Buy it
3. Never Play it (or try 5 minutes of it then never again)

Yes, it is no longer pointless to own so many games and consoles as three or more persons.

>> No.5329012

i only had a collection cos i never got rid of stuff over the 32 odd years of playing games. but with hd loaders, flashcarts, burnt discs and mame i realised it was better to just sell that shit.i usually only rotate between a few shmups anyway though when mates come round we will play random bmups for fun or a fighting game depending on preference.
now games are too expensive especially if you have good taste.

Emulation is a better experience in every way, whether its easy access to any game, being able to use any controller, zero cost, access to enhancements like better resolutions, etc.

Anyone with a brain has realized by now that being a collectorfag nowadays is just stupid. The people who still collect just fall for the sunk cost fallacy and are in a permanent state of delusion because they have nothing else going on in their lives.

who cares? a physical collection of that size would probably require a separate room at least, unless you're hoarding modern games

if helps if you stop collecting and buy a gaming computer, so you can just emulate everything.
but you'll run into a new problem where you'll download literally every game

Ive been purging a lot of stuff, clothes, books etc. i have a decent collection of ps3 (not retro) ps2 games that i should get rid of since I already have a hacked ps3. Should I just trade them into gamestop just to get rid of them? I don’t know anyone who collects or needs them instead of just getting rid of them.

It would be cool to have a preservation society that had a large group of members who paid to acquire old videogames. The videogames would not be able to be played normally. They would be put in secure storage and occasionally loaned out to museums.
