Was there an actual market for these?

>> No.5323779

Yeah. I knew plenty of people with insane religious parents who would see stuff like this as the only video games appropriate for their children. At least they somehow got the best SNES FPS with it.

It was a logical choice. For example, Color Dreams originally sold their own (non-Bible) games, on their own custom unlicensed carts, so they wouldn't have to pay Nintendo huge licensing fees. But Nintendo used its clout to force stores not to sell Color Dreams games (basically threatening to pull their stock if unlicensed games were on the shelves). So Color Dreams had no place to sell their games. What was a market that Nintendo had no influence over? Christian bookstores. So they changed their name to Wisdom Tree, gave their games a thin Biblical veneer, and made bank.

They're a rather bizarre artifact of the late 80s-early 90s, back in the day when Billy Graham got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and churches were burning piles of metal albums.

It doesn't have motherfucking Noah in it therefore it's shit.
The best bible game is clearly Bible Adventures more specifically Noah's Ark.

>> No.5323921

I remember one of my neighbors/friends had Joshua for the NES back in the day and I'd play it some while at his house. I also feel like I vaguely recall seeing Super Noah's Ark 3D at some Christian store in the local mall, but that could just be a faulty memory.

>What was a market that Nintendo had no influence over? Christian bookstores

It was a clever move because Nintendo wouldn't dare risk the PR disaster of going after Christian bookstores for selling unlicensed games.

Good game.

BTW, for all you heathens that ripped out your lockout chip, don't play these unless it's on a flash cart or at least do some research. Supposedly the cart will overheat and can melt since it sends voltage to "zap" the lockout chip. I don't know how true this is, and isn't the normal BS about flash carts but it's worth researching.

Wisdom tree is the only "fullset" I have for NES. Decently cheap to collect and a few of the games are actually fun. I'd like to get the NIV version of the bible for gameboy, but it's stupid expensive ($850 on ebay as of posting this), as is super 3d Noah's Ark.

And they never released Devil World in the US because hurp it has Satan references in it. Their own fucking game.

My cousin had pretty much all these games for some reason, he was an adult so I'm not sure why. I used to like Spiritual Warfare more than Zelda even though it's one of the most insane games I've ever played. Nothing better than spreading the word of God by pelting the shit out of randos with fruit while internalizing the core message that alcohol is cyanide for the soul. I've never once been able to get the game to accept a password though.

Yes. I was born into an evangelical family, and Bible Adventures is the only childhood NES game that didn't end up getting lost. I would have been better off playing Spiritual Warfare.

We also had Raid 2020, which might have been even worse.

>you need nearly a million dollars to publish a game on their consoles
>on top of the cost of developing the game

That seems awfully steep, I doubt many companies could fork over that much cash.

>> No.5327592

>>5327581
They did not and it's why the prominent names in NES gaming were mostly arcade giants like Konami and Capcom who had loads of money. Also it's not coincidental that Ocean were one of the few European devs to put out NES stuff because they had the money for it.

Not many US devs did NES stuff either, mostly just Microprose, LucasArts, and Acclaim, all bigger devs with enough $$$ to pay Nintendo's exorbitant tax.

>> No.5327597

So it kind of explains why some companies came up and just instantly vanished, like Arcadia Systems. And some Japanese publishers were also into telecommunications, like Vic Tokai, Toho, or FCI/Pony Canyon.

>> No.5327626

EA never put out anything for the NES and their first foray into console gaming was on the Genesis where they connived Sega into agreeing to more fair license terms by producing unlicensed cartridges (Sega initially were as greedy as Nintendo) and then later coming to a settlement where they still got to make their own carts as a licensed developer.

>> No.5329210

>>5327620
And they had to pay extra shekels to license the game from Activision, and even more shekels to port the game to the Famicom. I wonder if Activision paid Tokuma Shoten for the rights to publish the game in the States, or if it was part of an agreement. It was released two years later in the states, which already made the game ancient compared to the C64 original.
