Depends entirely. Some games simply aged like shit or were crippled by hardware limitations. If it's just a polish over like the La Mulana remake (which is still a very good remake however) then it's really a waste of money. Now, if it's something like the RE remake or the remakes of Lunar 1 and 2 where they are pretty much completely different, it's perfectly forgivable.

i personally see nothing wrong with playing a remake, although for me i always try to find out how true to the original the remake is. if they add a bunch of shit without making it optional, i will play the oldest version that stays true, usually the original unless it's like a final fantasy that's been remade a dozen times. i understand the nostalgia and the plain retro factor of playing the original version of a game, but the simple fact is that many of the older games age poorly, or have a very well done remake that does little to mess with the original feel of the game, and in those cases i prefer to play a remake. that's just me though.

my main problem with this kind of thing is that some people act pretty elitist about "the original" which i think is just a bad attitude in general to have.

>> No.534093

Yes, I would, because DX adds the Color Dungeon which gives you a ridiculously overpowered item that breaks the difficulty level.

X-Com is the biggest recent offender of this thing as far as I'm concerned. On the surface it looks like it's just a visual upgrade, but it - and I really hate to be saying this - is literally Babby's First X-Com. I still recommend it, but with the huge disclaimer that the remake is pretty much nothing but a pretty tutorial for the old game.

This. As much as they're different games, shin megami tensei: Strange Journey took the Soul Hackers formula and made it a lot more enjoyable. The only time I've ever died in soul hackers was from stupid mudoon/hama bullshit, or running out of magic, while strange journey and its anti-grinding system felt challenging without being stupidly unfair.
