Can we talk about the major impact Sega had in the hip-hop community in the early 90s?
>Michael Jackson's hip-hop collaboration tracks were low-key featured on Sonic 3's OST.
>Kriss Kross's "Make-My-Video" for SegaCD
>"Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, when I was dead broke man I couldn't picture this" -B.I.G.
>NBA Jam
>every Knuckles the Echidna stage's music
>Shaquille O'Neal's Shaq Fu was realeased at the highlight of his Hip-Hop and NBA Career.
At what point did Sega stop appealing to urban America? It was dope. Fuck I love Sega.

I wouldn't call MJ's music "hip hop" though, MJ is called "The King of Pop" for a reason.

That's just Biggie talking about wanting to be an idort, not a Sega-only thing.

Not a Sega franchise, also on SNES

hip hop in video games back then was a meme, there wasn't anything seriously involved and mostly just a quick cashgrab that never went successful.

Hip hop got serious, too serious fo soundtrack a video game. Sega's not the only one to have that problem.

There was a lot of NJS in the Sonic soundtracks too, like Spring Yard and the 2 player Casino Night. Even a bit of electro.

At the same time that East Coast mafioso and West Coast G-Funk were rising in popularity, there was an alternative movement in the West and South that focused on being goofy, irreverent, and lyrical. Groups like The Pharcyde, OutKast, Freestyle Fellowship, A Tribe Called Quest, and Dilated Peoples all fit the general aesthetic of a lot of games from the early 90s, and (aside from OutKast and The Pharcyde) those groups largely shied away from profanity.

I assume developers shied away from hip-hop soundtracks because the music became highly politicized after the Rodney King riots, and popular media focused on the themes of gang life, crime, and living extravagantly popularized by acts like NWA, Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G, and Nas.

It makes me sad that a lot of people hear Chief Keef or Cardi B or whatever and assume all hip-hop is vapid, because I know it means they'll never listen to Digable Planets, Black Star, the Fugees, or any of dozens of other great, musically proficient groups that got overshadowed (well, Wyclef and Lauryn both had successful careers solo, but I never seem to meet people younger than 30 who listen to the Fugees)

I just read a book on the history of the Nobel Prize, and it made me realize how frequently the Norwegian Academy got egg on their face for their Peace Prize selections--Henry Kissinger, Anwar Sadat, Yitzak Rabin, Mandela, and Yasser Arafat all won the prize and, more recently Obama won one while presiding over a country involved in two massive, destructive wars in contravention of the UN Charter and Declaration of Human Rights.

I dig Del, caught him with Souls of Mischief in Denver last year. I love the production on 3030, but it's not my favorite work of his. The whole space opera gimmick gets a bit tiresome, but that's just my tastes. As far as vidya soundtracks go, I was thinking more about the production than the lyrical content
