5319065 No.5319065 [Reply] [Original]

I want to play the original star ocean games but I can only find the psp games and remember reading mixed things about these versions. Are the differences really a big deal? The new art looks cute

>> No.5319075

>>5319065
If you like the new art play the PSP version, undub recommended as the new dub is still meh.

A major change it makes is that the "martial" characters can perform 3-hit combos naturally right out the gate, which has a major effect on the difficulty, and that the harder difficulty modes are unlocked by killing 1000 or 2000 monsters instead of voice collection. You can also recruit Welch.

one of the most fun ways to play the game is to just stay with the two starting characters to see all the unique storyline differences

also instead of beating the wisemen by outnumbering them there will end up being a fight where they outnumber you instead, and that owns

I prefer the 90's stylistic anime look of the original, but to each their own.

The second evolution fixes some bugs and adds new cut scenes and private actions, but it also completely changes the flow of battle for melee fighters by breaking up the flow of combat into three hit combos. Also the new voice acting is mediocre whereas the old one was so bad that it was charming.

Someone on /vr/ keeps saying there's a bunch of unique scenes if you only play with two characters like when Claude gets ported to the Clanus at the end of Expel, but no one ever elaborates on this. I'm not sure if I'm getting memed or not, but I love this game so much I'll try it anyway.

Ive played through SO2 multiple times with various character combos. Ive done Just Rena and Claude. There is nothing major about doing it just as Rena and Claude. There are minor changes in dialogue. Like Celine re-joining you in Mars after you ditched her. Who cheers for Claude in the arena if the group is Rena, who keeps ditching to do her quest. The end scene where they talk about the survivors being sent to Expel. References to the group sometimes are changed and sometimes not. As not all the dialogue for this was filled it. It does indeed have instances where they recognized people could just have Rena and Claude. No new scenes, no story line differences, it's the same game.

>> No.5319620

I played the first game on SNES and the second game on PSX. Never played the remakes but I imagine they fix glitches and even out the difficulty curve.

Maybe play 1 on PSP since it's a remake of a very old game. But Star Ocean 2 wasn't super badly outdated imo.

This is completely and totally untrue. Under no circumstances does Rena go the Calnus. There is nothing to trigger this. Neither in Rena's game or Claude's game. As Claude, Rena is left alone. As Rena, you are left alone. The battle suits you still are totally a claude exclusive event.

If you play as Rena, you still ditch Claude for the tournament. This is all mandatory storyline and a random audience member cheers claude on if there are no other party members. Same on Claude's side.

>>5320409

Impossible within the story to win, it's a scripted loss. You can beat the fight, but you fight him again and again till you lose.

Dude you fucked it up by missing events or lying to your spouse or something. Claude doesn't leave her behind he gets her to hug him and transport at the same time. You're probably just a shitty partner if you fucked up the relationship, that shit is full dating sim secret route tier.

There should be no single point in the entire storyline where they're separated after the second village. You do not add other party members, not even temporarily, you do not leave their side, you track them down and stalk them during private actions, you do not let them die in battle unless it's the most desperate of circumstances. You never say anything to disregard their feelings or make them jealous. You have to actually be 100% faithful to an autistic degree. This would completely change the narrative of the game for Rena to discover Claude is an alien and the Calnus at this point. You're claiming either the entire rest of the game plays out differently, and Rena has a higher level of understanding for the ten wise men, her origins and so on, or the game completely ignores this?

Besides, if Rena came up too and there were 0 other party members down on Expel, Claude would have no reason to go back down, the game would effectively end at disc 1.

Except for Noel, it's literally Claude with a cold. The fact they'd sometimes say other things, it was really cool for me. I was never into graphics, but the voices hooked me.

>>5324039

oooo...that's well..... no. SO3 lacks the charm of 2 and tries to up the ante too far. I liked parts of, some of the characters are fun, but SO2 has a very cohesive plot. As messy as it seems, it still sits itself in distant future sci-fi. SO3 is sci-fi, but it goes to futures beyond realms of technology and magic blurring and the plot is far weaker. The battle system is enjoyed by some people for its depth and control, but I didn't find it an improvement.

SO4 got very repetitive to me, it was fun at times. The battle system is slick enough, I found some cool combos, and it was mostly fun. Over all, it drags on and has the most anime flat narrative. It's uninspiring and bland and I can't even really remember the story at all, but I do remember major points and stuff being dumb.
