I just finished the /pol/ map and I thought it was great except for one thing: The enemy placement. There were WAY too many enemies. I know that it's kind of the point because it's ridiculous but come on. The only reason I could finish the level was because I was playing on I'm Too Young To Die. Also sometimes the imp sprites would go back to the original sprite when in pain.

DoomRL is a good way to introduce yourself to roguelikes. It's hard compared to 99.9% of games out there, but compared to most roguelikes it's really easy.

Highly recommend a shotgunner build btw, and diagonal movement increases enemy miss rate (think of it like circlestrafing in normal doom).

Good map, lots of /pol/ jokes, fuckshitgoddamnload of enemies (nazis and niggers and joos, omy!). It's a good play even if you don't get (or don't appreciate) the jokes. Especially the "boss" encounter.


We really should get a good run/playthrough that touches on all the jokes to post on /pol/ when it's done. I'd do it myself, but I can't get FRAPS to play nice with Doom, and I'd want to let the mapper have the honor of telling us when, and if we should do it.

I intended for the difficulty settings to be about thus:

very easy->slightly harder than vanilla UV
easy->harder than vanilla UV
medium->hell revealed
hard->scythe 2

The whole point of the difficulty settings is to use them; there's no point in BUT I ALWAYS PLAY ON HARD MODE if you don't have any fun. And the wouldn't have been any point in having the very easy and easy settings match the vanilla settings because nobody would bother playing them. If it wasn't my map (and I didn't know it very well because I put everything there) I would be playing it on medium difficulty.


You shouldn't need the rocket launcher in the first room, though it does make it easier.

Don't just hide on the sides of the door for cover; if you let them see you fairly often you'll provoke more infighting and it will be very easy. The monster placement there is literally designed to have as much infighting as possible and all of the monsters are capable of infighting among their own creature type.

If you don't use mouse look it can get bad. I didn't use it and went off through Dooms regular auto aim and they put Chaingunners outside of your range thus you either have to get closer or use mouse look while still being in the range of the Chaingunners.

I am sure you have already experienced many times over a Chaingunner on his perch and you just don't bother killing him because there is an Archvile you cannot see that always revives him. Triggering traps with Chaingunners firing at you in three separate directions, walking out of the starting area and get mowed down by chaingunners. God damn were there chaingunners.

Then with Revenants get use to fighting near a dozen of them at a time.

I was able to replicate your issue with zandronum; I hadn't actually tested it in zandronum myself, just taken people's word for it when they played it in multiplayer.

For right now it seems that your best option would be to play this in zdoom (or gzdoom, so I've heard) Those display no such errors as you are experiencing.

I don't know what is causing this issue but I'll try to fix it. I'm not sure why zandronum appears to be having issues with it. I didn't play test with it making the map because it was never intended to be a multiplayer map.

Running a Map Analysis results in a huuuuuuuuuge checklist of various linedefs missing lower textures, missing backsides/frontsides, unclosed sectors, doublesided defs marked singlesided, etc, etc. This is really quite a lot of things.
The "Sector is not closed" in particular often causes lots of tearing in texturing like I'm experiencing.

Followup to this: this probably arose because for about the first half of making this map I wasn't aware that you could delete sectors instead of individual linedefs within a sector, and also didn't know that you could hit 'f' to change the way a linedef faced. When I needed a linedef to face a certain way for a door I would redraw and delete parts of sectors until I got a linedef the way that I wanted.

This will take some time to fix, but I'll do it when I have time and reupload a better version. In the meantime tell people to use zdoom for it, since it doesn't produce those visual errors.

I like looking around without things being squashed, yeah. I also like Software's lighting and how it doesn't shift and tweak sprites as I look up and down. One's a gameplay benefit, one's a pretty benefit.
Doom's maps don't often play on the vertical element, so I go for the pretty benefit more than the gameplay benefit.
I'm certain people will disagree.

This is a clear case of gameplay benefit trumping over it, so the ideal situation for the player is of course to go in ZDoom/GZDoom and play it. But I think it's good to prepare a wad for every possible player to go through it, not just a specific type of player.

Well, don't worry too much about it. I actually just checked myself, and I can confirm that it's only when playing Zandronum in software mode that these visual glitches occur. Switch to hardware, and they vanish. Play Zdoom in software, works fine. Same with GZDoom in hardware. It's really peculiar, but I'd chalk it up to Zandro's software mode being shit.

Also, the wrong music plays in Zandronum either way. You really might just want to point out that the map's made for Zdoom, and that Zandro should be used at the user's peril.

A single level that takes place with some red brick buildings, you go from the outside and try to go inside. There is a nice bridge that connects two of the buildings top floors. I didn't fully explore the map though, it was a fairly short map but somewhat fun, though I ran into ammo troubles with using almost all of my ammo (no more bullets and one to three shotgun shells left) to get into the final room. Thankfully it had a plasma rifle for the exit.

Also AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA in one of the sections, wasn't annoying though. It is mostly based around monsters placed in certain places waiting to ambush you around corners. Starts off on the wrong foot with some unfinished story segment where you're walking around collecting "Credits" that are just armor bonuses, some marine tells you that you need to do target practice like it's leading into a tutorial but they never follow through(also their dialog text pops up so fast that it overlaps the old lines). I've messed with things, and I have the riflemen, shotgunmen, and chaingunners all firing very fast projectiles.
Chaingunners are much less deadly, but shotgunners... those guys are nasty at all ranges. At far ranges, they still spread their attacks across the map. I think I'll make half of their boolet vanish after too long or something similar.

I am now dabbling in my second map, and I am hoping I have learned various things from my first map. It is another space station themed one (I love space station themed maps, hell as a kid I only played Episode 2 in Duke3D). I am hoping it eventually becomes more and more action packed. I personally limited the space of the map that the player can traverse so it will be smaller than my previous one, but there will be more back tracking. I am avoiding a maze like or labyrinth like map since I'd imagine it would be a pain to back track through. I have mostly been experimenting with teleporting monsters in this map. The map is far from complete (or at least I think it is), the furthest you can get to is opening the blue door, and when you open the door it is pretty much the end of the map since it will just be an empty space. Though fair warning, it may seem like it is generous with ammo at first, but I only had enough ammo to make it to the blue door, and that wasn't enough to kill every single monster there so there will still be plenty of ammo and health balancing going on when more and more is added. I would like some feed back on what I have currently. Here are four quick screen shots inside the map. Also thanks for the help for the last map I was tinkering with.

Basically if you like a better lighting engine, use GZDoom.
If you like the original Doom-style bright lighting, and maps that use it, keep ZDoom.
That being said, if you use GZDoom, you can use vid_renderer 0 and keep the Doom-style lighting.

Doom has a great pace to it and the weapons are all satisfying to use and have their ups and downs. The enemies are simple to understand and exploit, but there are so many of them set up and ambushes built into the levels that the same enemies can still be a thrill to fight.

The fact that due to the simplicity of the engine, mapping and modding is so much easier, means that even if you can run through Doom wads with one hand on UV (or even if you can't!) there's still so much content out there that something will blow your mind all over again.

I loaded it up on Ultra-Violence and there was way, way too little ammo. Even squeezing the juice out of every bullet and shell I could find, I still had three hell knights and around four imps left in cramped quarters that I just was not gonna be able to kill off with only fists.

My suggestion is.... add more ammo, maybe health too. Berserk would be ideal for quickly dealing with demons/imps in close quarters imo; for this map I'd take one over the super shotgun in a heartbeat. In cramped quarters, especially the room with the chaingun where there are an almost annoying amount of ambushes, you are very likely going to miss shots and get hit. Plinking away at imps with the pistol is effective there, but is annoying especially when the chaingun is sitting all shiny-like and you can't just pick it up because traps + not enough ammo to deal with the monsters fast enough.

The demon/spectre traps are very effective, but there is such a thing as being too effective -- you want the player to be panicked, not dead.

The blue key room misguided me into thinking that the objective should be to get the key and kill the ambush, leading me to get fed up with the wad the first time around and quitting. It's not immediately obvious that your goal should be "follow the path and get the key later" since it is possible to make it through the room killing all the chaingunners and then leaving.

Sure I'll put in more ammo, I personally had ammo troubles as well and gave that off as a warning since it isn't balanced off yet, especially that I'll have more spawning monsters.

I think I will change up the trap so people won't survive it, probably make it so the guys can't wander around. I was curious if someone would want to defeat them since they are chaingunners in the dark after all. I did want some sort of trickery in dangling an object you wanted in front of you but if you tried to go for it instantly you'd fall into a trap. Though you did eventually figure it out so I don't know how big of a problem it would be since it is the only puzzle I have. I am going to modify that and test the trap out, then possibly re-release it once it is finished/more finished with much more ammo of course since I agree that there wasn't enough.

Though I am glad you tried it, a lot of the things you said I agree with such as the ammo, I was thinking that box room had too little ammo and almost no health.

I actually use FRAPS. But I use GZDoom as the source port. I also run a small LP series and that setup hasn't ever let me down.

There were a few pauses during the /pol/ wad video, but that's because my video card drivers were updating, and I, for some reason, figured that'd be a great time to make a video. Surprised it turned out okay.

But as for your problem. Keep trying different source ports. Like PrBoom, GZDoom, Eternity, even Chocolate Doom. Also, mess with the FRAPS setting a bunch. I have it to where the overlay is there, but isn't recorded, and the FPS has to be at least 60.

It may also depend on the resolution you are playing the game in. When I was playing in 1080x1920, I was getting around 50 GB every 2.5 minute clip (not making that up), which is astoundingly ludicrous. I play and record at 600x800. It runs smooth, and it even uploads in 720p for jewtube, which is a plus.

One last thing, if the videos are particularly long, then they may be choppy and "pausy" when first opened and made. I usually compile the videos together first into a proper file before viewing.

So far, what I can see is that Brutal Doom is only good for Single Player campaigns, and for the most part the official Id campaigns. Playing in those huge online co-op levels with a shit ton of monsters is fucking impossible, bullets flying all over the place, it's impossible to dodge all of that shit, and the hardest single player maps are fucking stupid to play as well.

Yeah it is pretty much only balanced for that, even then it makes it really hard. I have a hard time justifying doing melee attacks to monsters for Brutal Doom because the monsters tend to get a hit in, and especially leaping Imps. Though it does make things easier, I could take out a Cacodemon with three shots from a regular shotgun.

You think about what the board is about - games that have been out for ages, many of which have already been discussed to death in the past, and it's clear the board appeals to a much smaller niche compared to the likes of /v/. Not that it's really a problem if you ask me - I have no qualms with a fraction of the traffic, given the particular kind of traffic you get on faster boards like /v/.

I think Doom threads won't have any issues thriving since there's an active community that still produces new content for the game. Same can't be said about many other games almost two decades old.
