Best version of HL? And why?

>> No.5318160

The original with widescreen. I'm not sure if there's any way to get the original running in widescreen though except by using Steam.

That won't change ANYTHING other than making it run widescreen? No vertical cropping whatsoever?

Also, what does this:
>Also, if you want to have a better color quality of picture in the game, add this parameter to hl.exe shortcut:

mean? I mean, what will it do EXACTLY? What do they mean by "better color quality of picture"?

Half Life 2 and the episodes. Maybe it's because I live in eastern Europe, where it is set, so it always felt so real for me. Also it has sort of eerie, strange atmosphere to it, which is at the same time so great.

You can use Xash 3D.

Or if you're super autistic and want to play the 1.0 release version in widescreen then just patch the resolution in a hex editor. It's just like all the other old quake engine games. There's a table in the exe that goes like 640 480, 800 600, 1024 768 etc, just replace any of the given resolutions with whatever you want and that's it. This works for games like Kingpin and SiN too.

Ofc, the game will be vert- by default, so you'll need to increase FOV too. But I'm sure you're a big boy and can find the fov command on google.

>> No.5329507

>>5328861
This is /vr/ so basically anything older = better. People will seriously suggest you play unpatched games here. Because you know, even the developers themselves had no clue how their games were meant to be played and only the original unpatched release copies are ever worth playing.

A3D is an old API for an obsolete 3D sound tech. You can make a guess as to why it was removed in later patches.

You don't get gl_overbright in any version if you use multitextures. The only reason it works is because the WON version doesn't detect the capability on modern hardware.
Still, WON normalizes the lightmaps instead of clamping them, so it's still a win.

You can find cracks that'll make Half-Life 2 run without Steam. I would assume there are cracks for The Orange Box as well (which includes both expansions, right?).

The best way to run HL2 without Steam would be to first download the latest patched version from Steam, then use one of the Steam API emulators to run it offline. No file modification/cracks would be needed in this case.

Legitimate no, but someone did make a playable copy of the Collector's Edition (build 2153) using the original DVD. It uses a simple .bat file to bypass the Steam check, which you can read the source code to.

It's interesting if you are into speed running, bench marking old hardware, or a purist who wants to experience it the same way everyone else did in November 2004.

>The most noticeable difference in this port is its improved graphics. The character models are much more detailed, featuring eyes that track movement, facial expressions, and jointed fingers. The levels were also updated and extended based on the work from the Dreamcast port, and most of the bugs were ironed out, making it the most technologically advanced and stable version of the game to date.

>> No.5333752

>>5329456
the single player games from the orange box do not require the steam client nor a internet connection

just make a bat file or a shortcut to HL2.EXE and add the -game parameter followed by the appropriate gameid (hl2, episodic, ep2, lostcoast, portal)

you obviously need to download the games first, and the only legitimate way to do it is through steam

the same goes for HL2:UPDATE which is currently the best vanilla-friendly version of the game

>A3D is an old API for an obsolete 3D sound tech. You can make a guess as to why it was removed in later patches.
A3D didn't become obsolete because it was bad or something better came out, it became obsolete because Creative lawyer-cucked Aureal out of existence.
It was removed because A3D cards had no manufacturer support anymore.
