He's not the kind of unbeatable bullshit later superbossses are, but he's pretty tough as far as encounters in that area go, and you're probably not in the best shape once you get to the final floor where he's lurking either.
But they could've just as well had put Lich 2 and his Nuke bullshit up there and had him ruin your runs too.

Yeah, I went out of my way in my playthru (THF/BB/RMG/RMG) and defeated Warmech pretty easily, but I also had to look for him specifically on the top floor for 3-4 visits.

And Lich 2 is where I took a break - just in the context of an attrition tower its frustrating.

Eh, Warmech's a softy. You just gotta be expecting that faggot. Once you know where it is and get wrecked, you come back prepared and can beat it then BTFO Tiamat as well. Lvl UP! Lots.

The worst part of FF1 is without a doubt the goddamn sorcerers in the Ice Cave. AND the mages. AND the frost dragons that you encounter twice in a row. Talk about wearing down parties.
