>The 5000 series.
I would agree. This is the best of quite a few revisions and features.

I have a few models of PSX. I gave my 5501 to my brother, and held onto a 7501, a 1001 with the pu7 board and a 1001 with the pu8 board. The pu7 needed a laser assembly replacement 2 years ago, and my pu8 board is still going strong with no replacements, and no fmv skipping. It plays cd-r media.
I have had it since new. I like the direct AV/out, but use the s-video cables through the multi-out. I have a guncon and time crisis is one of the main games I play, so it is a bit of a cost savings to not have to buy the AV breakout box. All PSX systems are dirt cheap which is a good thing. Having a i/o port for a game shark is what I would consider an essential feature.

However, the PSone is much smaller, and is still a quality unit. Avoid anything with a pu7 board. It is not a meme that they look terrible in comparison to later revisions.

I love the "audiophile" mods, and they certainly had some great ideas that even a gamer could take advantage of. Making the PSU external would have saved quite a bit of headache in the 100X models, and might have never required the laser assembly to be moved. I don't know what half the shit they put onto their systems is, but some of them certainly look pretty neat. The wooden ones all look amazing.

>>5313564
They're cheap enough. If you have component cables already for the PS2 then you might just want to get a slim.

Better audio DAC

So many conflicting opinions on this topic. What version do I want if:
1. I don't give a shit about the I/O port
2. I want the best visual quality for RGB output
3. I want the best audio quality for Analogue out (no plans to mod digital out at this time, but the compatibility for that mod is a plus for the future)
4. If 2 and 3 are met, I'd like the most reliable revision that can meet those standards. Some PS1 junkies swear by taking the laser out of a PSone and putting it in an older Fat, anybody have experience on this topic?

For the most part, the memed answer seems to be a 1001.

5000 series is the best bet. It has the same Analog DAC as earlier revisions. Avoid ANYTHING with a pu-7 board. This can be avoided by not buying 100X units, but not all 100X units have the pu-7 board. Some do have a pu-8, which changed how gradients in color are represented. I don't fake knowledge on why, but I know that I have 2x 1001 units, and one has the "banding" for shadows, and the other does not in the same games. They may have improved the GPU again after the pu-8 board revision, but I don't know that it was as substantial as the first major upgrade.

I have done this. They changed the laser assembly after the 100X series from plastics to metal. Not all of it was changed, but enough so that it does not warp over time. This was the major failing point of the first units. A mix of plastics warping because of being close to the heat from the internal power supply, and wearing out from the laser moving back and forth. I don't know that they make lasers that are identical to the original specs, and the 1001 units use the same laser as the 101 (PSone) units. The major differences in revisions is the placement of the laser, and this has a change in the ribbon that attaches to the motherboard. Different board have different placement and cable lengths. There may have been other changes as well, but I am not aware of them. The "shield" that covers the laser assembly is a bit different, but the black and grey cover are interchangeable. Pic related is from when I changed over from a dead unit to a new old stock one. I have not used that unit since, and keep it as a backup in case my primary unit shits the bed, and if that happens I would probably move the laser.

So just to be clear, the 1001 hype is a meme, and the RCA jacked models do not have any audio quality related differences to the 5000 series? I appreciate the informed and detailed responses.

>> No.5313923

>>5313894
No, it's just much easier to get high-quality audio through RCA. You'll have to do a bit of research to get the same out of 5000.

This would be better answered by an audiophile. It may be that the 100X board were easier to mod for direct output. Audio mods don't give a damn if it has the lesser GPU. Every audio modded PSX has RCA outputs, and it may just be more simple for them, but it is my understanding that the audio DAC is identical through the 5000 series. I never understood this either, but I suspect it may have something to do with simplicity. Without the direct RCA outputs, you need to use the multi-av output with the proprietary plug....but at that point, you might as well install your own gold plated plugs onto the back of the unit. I don't get it either. This may cause issues for them acoustically/autistically. I would think that they are as obsessed with perfect sound as some anons are with RGB output to a brand new PVM.

HOWEVER.

If you use a Guncon and Svideo, if you don't have rear video jacks, you need to also have the goofy audio/video box that plugs into the back of the unit. (playstation av adapter). The guncon must plug into a composite video jack to work correctly, and oem svideo cables don't have this. (Pic related)

I just opened up one of those adaptors and swapped over pins 5 and 6.

Now I have sync on Luna with an OEM scart cable and can additionally feed it out over a separate RCA if I choose to.

I can't see how this is better than the OEM output. This seems like a total hack job.

Nice. I figured it out myself since I was using an s-video to component converter box since my CRT lacks s-video. This way the luma channel was fed to its own RCA jack.

Well, the 100x multi-av stereo out is better than its RCA outs (lack of garbage-quality coupling capacitors, op-amps and whatnot).

Mick's "solution" there is jank as fuck though. Jeez, just use a guncon adaptor.
