What version of Powerslave gets played these days? From my very limited understanding, the PS1 version is much superior to the PC release.
Has there been any unofficial ports like with DOOM64 EX?

seconding this, would also like to know.

also, what's everyone's favorite episode from blood? I'm playing through it for the first time, currently on episode 4. so far I'd rank them

I just finished Blood for the first time myself, and the expansions as well. I loved the game, the mechanics and feel of it is so addictive. I think the dynamite and shotgun have instantly become some of my all time favorite weapons in gaming.
I would go
2 > 1 > 4 > Plasma Pak > Cryptic Passage > 3
I enjoyed every single episode though. 3 just felt a little stale comparatively, it did have one really good level but that's about it. I'd say 2 had my favorite levels, with "The Overlooked Hotel" possibly being my favorite level in the game.

I can't wait to get into Death Wish.

>> No.5309351

I think 1 is the most diverse with the train, carnival, etc. and the levels lead into one another pretty well. Secret level is good but has too much hitscanner spam on higher difficulties.

Ep. 2's winter theme is cool and I like the boat & mansion stuff, but some of the hedgemaze stuff is annoying and the secret level sucks.

Ep. 4 has the castle, mall, and forest, but some stuff feels tacked on and the In the Flesh level sorta comes out of nowhere and isn't that fun. I feel like they made the textures for that then ran out of time to do something good with it.

Ep. 3 Starts out cool but the sewer sucks (what were they thinking?) and I hate the mechanical stuff. The hospital is neat but easy to get lost inside. Secret level is meh.

>> No.5309357

I feel like the strength of E1 and E2 is in its cohesion going from level to level. You'll also get this in "Cryptic Passage" but since it's all reused assets from the main game, it doesn't feel quite the same.

>> No.5309363

Yeah episode 3 started off well. I really enjoyed the first couple of levels but it went downhill FAST with the sewer level and ended with two of my least favorite levels (Spare Parts and Monster Bait). I missed the secret level in that ep though, I'll have to replay it and play through it.

>> No.5309364

Thanks for your answer. I was just curious since it was released so much later, you never know how differently things may be balanced.
Like say "Lightly Broiled" being much more mellow in the mod than in the main game.

>> No.5309369

>my least favorite levels (Spare Parts and Monster Bait)
completely agree with you there. I found "Monster Bait" no fun at all, mainly a frustrating experience, and it also just looks shit. I'd say "The Sick Ward" is the only legitimately great one in E3.

>> No.5309373

I never really liked EP 1 of blood. Other than the dark carnival which is an awesome map. The majority of it just felt like rectangle and box rooms with cultists in them. The train level is only memorable because its on a train, but the actual gameplay is crap.

The original DW was brutal but by v1.4 and v1.5 the health drops and enemies became more sensible. For the reasons I stated I think it's easier than the original game if only because you won't get surprised by hitscanner squads. You'd better be a wiz with TNT, though - DW throws way more enemies at you in groups than OG Blood.

I've been playing the main game (For the first time) on "Pink on the Inside" which has been pretty easy on me, I really only had trouble with "Plasma Pak" but the rest made for pretty safe playing. I liked episode 2's gimmick with the napalm launcher, getting a ton of ammo for it before you actually find one made it so much more satisfying once you got it and could immediately cut loose. There weren't enough cultists in the second half of the episode and the rest of the E2 roster is pathetic, so it wasn't as fun as it could've been, and the boss is just an absolute joke. The mine level just before it was great though, and thematically it was probably my favorite episode. Still haven't done Cryptic Passage though.

>> No.5309438

>> No.5309440

You can probably get through Death Wish on Lightly Broiled then. You'll have to use some tactics that you didn't need in the original game for dealing with large groups of enemies but it has less cheap shots where you get blasted in the face as soon as you enter a room. The level design is a lot more wide open, too, so you'll be moving around more in general.

The others at least had ranged attacks and the tricks that trivialized them required specific knowledge rather than basic tactics. As soon as you get her out of the room she starts in, the fight is over.

I intend on giving it a shot soon, I'm pretty put off by the character, not that he offends me but its just so incredibly lame. The rest looks pretty good though, even though I don't have much of an interest in the samurai aesthetic. The weapons in the game look pretty great, especially the riot shotgun.

The Saturn version is the superior release in terms of features, level designs and powerups. Fairly easy to emulate using Mednafen Saturn, and if you emulate a Sega 3D controller using any run-of-the-mill Xinput controller it plays fairly well, stands the test of time amazingly well for a ~97 console shooter.

The PS1 version is like the Saturn version with (usually) better framerates and resolution but much simplified level geometry. As tempting as this version may be it lacks a lot of the polish from the Saturn version, and the autoaim is way too weak for a console shooter so its much harder to play.

If you can find a build of Powerslave EX it would be a viable option for a native PC experience but unfortunately its levels and enemies are based on the inferior PS1 version, and the port was never properly completed so there are still a few bugs here and there. If Night Dive successfully acquires the rights for Powerslave then it might be completed in the future.

I've never played the original PC release, but it's so drastically different from the console versions in everything but title and aesthetic that it's like a different game. I hear good things about it, sort of like if Duke 3D was egypt-themed on an earlier version of the Build engine, and even though you're stuck with DOSBox there was a recent hack that fixes controls and bugs.

Hope that helps.

>> No.5310161

Just use DOSBox, I don't think theres of any ports for Powerslave. The PSX/Saturn games are not build games but are also pretty good.

Blood's greatness actually ends around The Haunting level. The first episode is fun for it's first four maps, then clearly went into tedium for the castle levels. Episode 2 has a great opening level, then two average maps, then the duo of awesomeness: Overlooked Hotel and The Haunting. The rest is weak.

And from episode 3 onwards, it became just a simple repetition.

In short, Blood should be packed into a single 8-9 level episode, having the first 4 of episode 1, E2M1, E2M4-5, and a boss+secret levels.

How do I read the books that you pick up in Death Wish? Also is it normal to get fps drops? Getting some pretty massive drops on the 2nd level, all the way down to 44fps in one area.

iirc you get the text as a message when you pcik the books up.
are you playing with fps cycles set to auto? if no, try it. if yes, works on my machine.

I liked death wish, but it's not flawless like some people make it out to be. it's more linear than most build games, and tends to go for the "cinematic" feel of modern fps games. it relies heavily on scripted events and half life style in-game cutscenes, and often prevents you from backtracking/exploring.
still pretty fun to play, though. I liked how it sent you back to a different version of the previous level when you completed a secret level.

I like it because it's super fun to freeze 2-3 enemies in a row and then switch to the pistol to shatter all three in a row using a bullet each. otherwise:

Make it bounce on walls to hit Battlelords or annoying enemy placement without getting in their line of sight

It's pretty effective against Newbeasts

Use it on Damn I'm Good to get rid of corpses and avoid respawning

Use it in Dukematch so the shattered corpse spawns an Atomic Health

I thought Plasma Pak was the biggest disappointment for me. Instead of the Tesla cultists they really should have introduced something equivalent to the imps in Doom that could lob something that was long range but dodgeable as a primary attack to make encounters more interesting. The pods don't fit in imo and are buggy (crash the game easily). Beasts are bullet sponges with a cheap AOE attack. I thought several of the map settings were dull, too. Some of the weapon updates were cool but the voodoo alt fire is useless now.

>> No.5311230

Guess I'm the only one around here that likes the Plasma Pak.

>> No.5311231

I agree about ep 3. the first two levels feel slow as fuck, and the weapons/ammo feel to sparse. most of the remaining levels just look boring. this being said, Sick Ward and Monster Bait were pretty fun. the catacombs would be fun if they actually looked like the paris catacombs.

overall I'm not a huge fan of cryptic passage. the steamboat provides a great stage for a horror themed mission (and I found it pretty spooky when I first played it), but sadly the cramped environment seems to fuck with the enemy pathfinding in some places. the rest of the levels just seem a bit all over the place. with the exception of the library, they tend not to stay consistent with their own themes.

personally I enjoyed the plasma pak levels a lot. they're generally very open ended, and there's usually many ways you can approach every given situation. in Forbidden Rituals, for example, you can enter the main temple in at least three different ways.

>> No.5311247

Plasma Pak is fine, it's just that Cryptic Passage is better.

>> No.5311258

Public Storage and Aqueducts are too of my fav map in the entire game.

The theme in Public Storage may be as unoriginal as possible, but layout and gameplay is just stellar; and there are so many ways to go through the map and yet it's always great.

I admit the swimming cultists can be a pain in Aqueducts, but that's where you gotta be smart and take them out one of by one with stealth. There is a lot of tension involved not to fuck up and I think it's cool.

I love Welcome To Your Life as well. Again, plenty of ways to go through the map and it's always fun, it really encourages trying to be smart and take enemies from behind etc
and that's without mentionning sequence breaking at the start of the map, using a dynamite jump to access the rooftop directly.

Again, CP's boring gameplay doesn't cut it for me despite the maps having some cool themes and sometimes layouts too.
It's like they really did not "get" Blood's gameplay, enemy choice, use and placement feels like they treated Blood like a Duke usermap. The over abundance of supplies also comforts me in the idea the devs sucked at the game, and therefore did not "get" it.

You've echoed more or less how I felt playing the two expansions for the first time a couple of days ago. To me Plasma Pak felt like an extension of the original game, those mechanics taken further, a tougher challenge. It was also neat seeing new enemy types.
Cryptic Passage has really nice level-to-level consistency, but overall I was not as engaged by it.

>From my very limited understanding, the PS1 version is much superior to the PC release.

It's a different game. The console and PC version are a different game sharing the same assets.

The PC version was made first but released second. It's a "Doom-like" in Build, if not with great gameplay, at least with great level design and atmosphere.
If you play it make sure you don't download the beta version of the game widely spread on warez sites and which has been plaguing the game since release. The date on the .exe should say Dec 04 1996 (Powerslave) or Mar 19 1997 (Exhumed). I wouldn't trust a version with a more recent date either, and you should have music.

Saturn version was released first. it uses a full 3D engine and has some adventure elements akin to Metroid. Pretty impressive game considering it was for the most part developped at the same time as Quake.

PS1 version was released last but that doesn't mean it's the best version if you ask me. It's a port of the Saturn version, but by a different programmer. Gunplay feels a lot less satisfying and they got rid of bomb jumping. It's still worth playing because 2-3 levels are completely different.
EX version is a recreation of the PS1 version that loses even more in the translation. it was also never finished and has a lot more glitches. Only people who have no idea what they're talking about and who jumped on the hype wagon and discovered the game through EX would recommend it.

tl;dr play DOS version if you're able to find it and set up DOSbox. Also play the Saturn version, it also works 100% accurately on emulators, even yabause. Only then if you care enough play the PS1 version for its differences.

Alt PAL enemies is an easy way to bring variety into gameplay.

The only thing about it that's lazy is when weapons you see on the sprites do not match the projectiles that's coming out.
This is especially bad with SW's ninjas, which carry SMGs, and which fire rockets and grenades literaly from their belly, with little way to see it come.

Editing all the frames of an enemy, several times, for the weapon to match is a lot of work though, especially in the case of SW's Ninja which have a bazillion frames as they can literaly do almost anything that Lo Wang can (crouch, climb ladders, jump, etc). Besides they only fire other types of projectiles once in a while

This will be a thing of the past when my IK-driven multi-sprite-segment-character system finally works in Unity. All you have to do for characters to properly represent their weapon is change the held_weapon_sprite to the appropriate version. Handling of two handed firearms is a bit wonky atm, with sprite priority all over the place and sometimes my IK implementation spazzes out and turns the character into a noodly mess, but I'll keep working on it. The system only works with bipedal characters atm, but multipeds are also planed.

>> No.5316239

Duke hands down. It's a great tutorial and a great level at the same time, teaching and showcasing everything you can expect in the game. Let's also not forget that it was the first of "the main 3" and that first level alone wrote Build to history and made everyone's jaw drop; not Tekwar or Witchaven which were released first.

The same can't be said about Blood's, it's more like an easy simple map to begin the game slow.

SW's intro does teach the player what to expect in the game though, the first scene says it all. Enemies jumping in before you can even get your bearings or figure out the controls to fuck you up, yep that's Shadow Warrior alright.

Death row is amazing, don't let your childhood traumas of getting lost derail the common sense. The map is much better designed, more adventurous than Phantom Express and even the otherwise tasty Master Leep Temple.

As for Toxic Dump, it's a great map too, but Dark Carnival and Dark Woods caught up respectably. Too bad both games fell off the cliff after that, while Duke continued to excell in the amazing Abyss.

Blood returned to form in some episode 2 levels, but Duke never looked back by this time, despite the weaker outings by Levelord.

>> No.5316312

I like all of the levels in that post, I just overall enjoyed Phantom Express / Leep's Temple more than Death Row. Catacombs is a bit of a borderline case but the bit with the dozens of zombies coming out of the ground is good fun and the episode is too short without it. The update added 2 new enemies and there's already at least 4 more to be added as seen in various screenshots. I'm more worried about the weapons at this point. The Ion Bow feels, I don't know, weak? And it doesn't do anything interesting. I'm really hoping for some more crazy, unorthodox weaponry like the Shrinker/Expander, Guardian Head, Voodoo Doll, etc.

I really liked it, really consistently good throughout. I think it did as good as it could with the "story" it had throughout, but it got a little old seeing the death character constantly mess with you by turning into some enemy when you approached it.
Some fantastic levels though, but maybe a little too concerned at times with emulating more modern games by being cinematic and more linear.

>> No.5318887

>They fucked up the early access, but I tink we'll have a great FPS

On the contrary. The early access looked a lot more promising than this new level. Confusing layout, annoying fights in cramped corridors, random enemy placement, movement restriction by clusterfuck details, but above all: what is this house theme? Isn't this game supposed to be placed in a futuristic, cyberpunk Washington? Early access looked like futuristic, while this level is more we used to see in games like Redneck Rampage. If this is the direction, than Ion Maiden will be a bomb.

>> No.5318905

It's the villain's mansion and the guy is old so he probably enjoys a more traditional style home. Personally I think the new level is better than any of the EA levels. I never got lost, the was plenty of enemies to fight, areas to explore, and a nice outdoor area too.

>> No.5318931

>> No.5318937

I played the Ion Maiden update. Here are some thoughts.
-Performance is now way better
-Difficultly seems higher now
-The SMG used to be underpowered, but now it's super strong. Playing the first level again it's much harder to find ammo for
-The crossbow is pretty interesting, with multiple tiers of firepower when charged
-The magnum aimed fire is cool and has some use
-The grenade launcher should be fun, but it feels way more wonky compared to Quake or Shadow Warrior. Also it being a single weapon i'm not sure how to feel
-The infinite bomb power up is cool. I hope there are some more power ups or items in the final
-The new level shown is slightly smaller, but has a more tight and refined feel, like the old games
-Bowling bombs are still a bit finicky sometimes

Over all, very promising stuff. Needless to say, the complexity is still there.

I liked some of the linear parts if only for variety. If they were all like that Shadehaven level in episode 3 I think it would have been a bit much, especially since a bunch of them make you find all 6 (or 7!) keys. I got lost in a lot of the base game's maps because so many were concerned with weaving in on themselves (although I love the Overlook level). What were your favorite DW maps?

>> No.5319046

>without having to switch between three separate modes.
Except you can bind remote mines and prox mines to their own keys you pleb. With my esdf control scheme I have remote mines bound directly to T, normal dynamite to R. even still pipe bombs aren't even better than the normal dynamite. dynamite is way more powerful and you can control their positioning much better and for much longer ranges. you're just trash at using it. it's the norm to switch to dynamite in Blood frequently. in Duke 99% of the time I'm using pipe bombs it's just to tediously blow up bodies in damn I'm good difficulty, otherwise it's just rare uses to drop them out of vents etc to enemies directly below me in awkward places.

>> No.5319085

I think you need to work on your reading comprehension. He said "Pipe Bombs fulfill the same roll as dynamite without having to switch between three separate modes,' and you proceed to explain how dynamite needs to have different hotkeys to switch between them in some strange attempt to count his point while instead proving his point.

>> No.5319086

E1 = E5 > E2 > E4 > E3
They're all solid though. E5 is by far the best for gameplay. I think people overlook E5 because they're more concerned with aesthetics/atmosphere, while E5 was all about gameplay. A great example of this is a level like 'Public Storage': it's fucking boring aesthetically (it's a warehouse yawn) but the actual gameplay and inter-connectivity/layout are all fucking fantastic, to the extent that it's probably my favourite level in the game along with Forbidden Rituals and Forgotten Catacombs (all in E5). Every level in this episode is great, excluding The Ruined Temple because it's just plain lazy which feels very unfinished (it's basically an open playground), but even The Ruined Temple I enjoy playing through a lot.

I haven't played Cryptic Passage in a really long time but I never liked it as much as the original's episodes or Plasma Pak. Still really good though.

>> No.5319091

But they don't fulfill the same role. You can't throw pipe bombs further away or control their arc as well and nor as they nearly as powerful. They don't explode on contact either like normal dynamite does which is extremely beneficial, nor do they have proximity detection, nor can you leave them on a timer like secondary use of normal dynamite, etc.

>> No.5319096

I'm pretty sure when he said "without having to switch between modes" he thought cycling through the dynamite modes was necessary when it isn't, hence my post. Regardless you're "both" still wrong as explained.

I'd like to make a suggest for Ion Maiden. Please make it so that switching weapons is an automatic reload, because reloading is tedious and this would encourage more mixed weapon usage. Most of the weapons are pretty cool and viable but it has a few stinkers, namely the shurikens and sticky bombs. It has some unique/interesting shit like the Railgun, beating out Quake 2 as the first, and the Guardian Head is really cool. SW also has the best melee weapon. Then it has some gloriously powerful stuff like the Grenade Launcher.

I think SW has a lot of memorable levels, namely the wilderness, temple, and urban levels, like Seppuku Station, Master Leep's Temple, Dark Woods of the Serpent, Raider of the Lost Wang, or Bath House. Personally I'm not a fan of the industrial levels (factories, warehouses, shit like that, including Duke and Blood industrial levels, and SW has its fair share of those.

I have to mention Airplane and Skyscraper. Both are awesome levels in concept but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. Airplane's issue is that the enemies can see you through solid curtains and just fire away at you while you're blind. Other than that it's a cool level.

Quicker reload animations, quicker weapon switching animations, mighty foot and make the minigun shoot immediately but build up speed instead of the current spin up before shooting. The best thing in this game is the frenetic combat, but it seems to me that their choice of going realistic on the weapons design is negatively impacting that. I often find myself backing up into a safe corner to switch/reload weapons and it totally disrupts the flow ( and fun ) of combat. Also I completely avoid using the minigun despite it being the most powerful weapon so far because the spin up is also really disruptive.

Also make enemy projectiles faster on higher dificulties. Its just too easy right now to avoid almost all their damage by simply zig-zagging in front of them.

Other than that, everything feels perfect.

>Also, I know they're called bowling bombs, but the fact that you can't throw them higher than 1 foot feels bad man.

The alt fire that was added in the recent update has a different arc. It doesn't lob them but throws them.

>Also I completely avoid using the minigun despite it being the most powerful weapon so far because the spin up is also really disruptive.

If you hold the alt fire, you can fire instantly.
In fact, I'm not sure if it's intended, but you can even bypass the build-up that way: hold alt fire and press primary and you can instantly shoot with no build up at all, it doesn't work all the time so I suspect it's a glitch

Yea, those ugly, swapped, streched, recolored and overused sprites are the typical usermapper flaw, especially when the sprite is irrelevant at the level. These people usually think these unnecessary micromanagements on their levels can replace creativity or interesting layouts and combat areas. SW is comfy in a way that the other games aren't, though the beauty of the Build engine and games of that era is that they can all shine in their own ways.

SW is really good for its artwork and texturing, and can evoke some great nature feels. Blood really has 3 different kinds of enemies.
1. Easy enemies that are pretty much trivial if the player has ammo or patience, like zombies, rats, butchers, gargoyles, essentially most of the game.
2. Mid tier enemies, which can fuck you up sometimes. Like hellhounds, underwater gillbeasts, and boss creatures.
3. And then there's the fuck you you're dead tier, which is reserved entirely for the hitscan cultists who can kill anything in seconds

>> No.5325752

Not sure why the hitscan enemies in Blood are such a contentious topic. I've been playing some Duke Nukem lately, and I feel like I have way less control over the hitscans in that game than what I do in Blood.

I'm better at Blood so maybe that plays into it, but I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on how to encounter enemies and get out fairly unscathed, whereas in Duke I'm taking damage constantly and I don't know what exactly I should do. Blood you duck and jump, they're incredibly effective against the cultists. Not denying that Blood has some absolute dickish enemy positioning, cultists standing around every corner ready to fuck you up.

>> No.5325778

Blood's hitscan are easier to stunlock. Duke's hitscan are easier to dodge.

Doom has projectile enemies and deadlier player weapons. In Duke Nukem, you have to shoot the shotgun 2/3 times to kill one pig or chaingunner each. In Doom the supershotgun can kill like 10 humans in one shot. Doom is more about run and gun + crowd control. Duke is more about taking cover and using explosives in more elaborate environments.

LA Meltdown is great, they put most of the best stuff in it since it was the shareware. The last few levels are a bit of a letdown though.
The Birth is basically like episode 1 but funnier and consistent. Fuck babe Land though.
Shrapnel City is good, but not too consistent. The level designers have admitted many of its maps were rushed or converted from DM levels. Fuck that piece of shit Stadium.
Lunar Apocalypse has great atmosphere and some damn good maps, but I prefer the city style. And besides, Duke's ridiculousness kind of ruins the space horror atmosphere.
Alien World Order is good, but it feels overdetailed and gaudy compared to the original episodes. And most of the maps don't really FEEL like their location, they just feel like standard levels wearing the skin of France, Britain, etc.

explain the RR humour to me.
am I missing the jokes because I'm ESL, or are there no jokes?

Did you play the game with the Cuss Pack? If yes, then BIG MISTAKE.
And it's not about the jokes, it's about irony, about the entire picture as a whole being ridiculously skewed. Also, purely art-direction-wise, the second game is far less consistent when compared to the first one.
At least, that's how I personally see it.

In other words, I'd say that RR heavily relies onto absurd, "what's going on in this thre~" kind of humor. It's not the punchlines that crack you up, it's just sort of so much things being so wrong all at once (the scrappy somewhat duct-taped quality of the game itself absolutely chips in as well), sometimes you just can't help but smile.

Here, found a more or less fitting analogy, I think. Shitposting, the good kind, for the most part.

Also, as the last remark, read the manual (download it off replacementdocs if need be).

I just finished Episode 2 for the first time ever. Not sure why people would put this episode on a pedestal. It had a couple of really good levels though, I wouldn't say that level design is its main problem just all the fucking annoying enemies and the setting just isn't good either.

Now onto Episode 3.

Ep2 is usually seen as the black sheep of the game.
