What's a good affordable retro game system? Anything not over 200.00 USD

>> No.5308902

Dreamcast because it can also run NES, Game Boy, and Sega System games with no modding.

The pc you already have and a bunch of emulators

Somehow emulating on PC was never fun for me. I had tons of fun emulating Snes on Dreamcast though

The 2600 is the cheapest, but you get what you pay for.

>> No.5308997

Get a Playstation. Look hard enough and you'll find one for $20 or under. The smaller PSone model ideally because it doesn't have any of the overheating problems certain older versions have.

>> No.5309016

If you want to get into retro gaming and also want it to be "affordable" and refuse to emulate, you're going to have a bad time. Getting a console is the cheap part but you're going to pay out the ass for even the most common games.

Here's one game system that was fun but you can not afford it if you're on a budget.

>> No.5309157

>>5308896
If you're talking playing on actual hardware your best option is to pick a cart based system + Everdrive or CD based system + mod chip. Saturn is a good choice since you can just pick up a cart with PseudoSaturn or put in a one-wire mod chip and get a Pro Action Replay. You would also probably want to look for a CRT locally for around free-fifty. Japanese games are still relatively cheap for certain systems if you're interested in picking up actual games.

I have never heard this before. I do know that the SCPH 100X was prone to failing due to heat from the power supply causing the plastic laser sled to degrade and warp on some models. I still have my 1001 model, and still am on the first laser. I wouldn't call it an "overheating" issue, but it was attributed to the plastics used in the laser assembly.

Any time you get a PSX, you should buy a replacement laser assembly. A psx is dirt cheap, and the laser replacements are too.

A simple fix for long life is to make sure it is not powered when not in use. My whole setup is on a surge strip, and I power it off when not in use. I bought my system new in 1996, and it still is going strong. It still reads discs including CD-r and has no skipping issues with FMV scenes. I know I am an outlier on that stat, but I do have a few backup systems just in case.

>It's missing two ports on the back but it barely matters unless you really want to buy a PS IO instead of a modchip

I like the older models because of the i/o ports. A modified gameshark (uniROM) allows you to boot cd-r media without any physical modification of the system.

A Wii modded with the homebrew channel can play most every game on a cartridge via emulation, but solely as a wii is garbage. It really only shines as a system when it is modded.

>Sega System

uh huh

>> No.5309308

PSX probably. Less than $25 if your lucky.

and a mod chip is cheap and easy for them.

Just look at local goodwill and you will probably find one. Avoid the places that mark a bare bones atari 2600 $125 AS IS. Please do not pay those kind of prices and encourage that type of behaviour.

>> No.5309319

lotta people suggesting PSX in here but there's really no reason you shouldn't just get a PS2 for a few bucks more.

The Atari 7800.

Fully backwards compatible with Atari 2600 and has a great selection of games for the Atari 7800 itself, as well as good exclusives.

It runs under 100 dollars and people on Ebay do HDMI mods for 75 dollars.

Genesis can be had for under $40 easily, even online including shipping. It has lots of great titles under $20 and doesn't tend have too many issues despite it's age, what with being a cartridge based system and all.

The Dreamcast can still be found on the cheap end and most models have no piracy protection, so if you can burn CDs and don't buy one of the later Dreamcasts then every game costs the price of a blank CD (albeit with issues.on certain games that need to be reduced in size for the media format).

Most Nintendo stuff is overpriced due to collectors and resellers but the NES can be had for a good enough price as can it's games.

If you want an emulator box that you can plug into a CRT, a Wii can still be found for $10-20 at thrift stores if you look hard enough.

get:
raspberry pi
micro sd
ps3 controller
hdmi cable
phone charger with at least 2A power
time to set it up

and just build retropie and hook it to your tv. wireless controller support and any retro game you want.
I, same as you, didn't fancy emulation on PC, but after I tried retropie, I love it. Real cost is the time invested into setting it up, though.

What? Most systems with a flashcart are well under $200. Most consoles run $30-80 and there are only a few systems that need most of $200 to be spent on a cart. The 64 with a v3 ED (so just get the 2.5 and your total would be $160) or the SNES. Most other flashcarts are $60-120.

Even in the case of disc systems like the Saturn or DC. The DC ODE + console are under $200. The Saturn with ODE is too. But why, if you are poor, wouldn't a person just burn the games?

All game systems are affordable if you have a job paying 10+$ an hour, you just have to budget correctly and not be a dipshit that got themselves into a shitty situation. Sometimes you cant help being in shitty situations, so you prioritize things. Buy multivitamins and eat top ramen for a few months, bam buy any system you want plus a few games.
