So the first like 26 minutes is Hexa talking to Joel. Well, more like "fanboying" than "talking", but still.
Still, Joel explained some stuff, like for example why one of the auto-saves had a thumbnail of a map he was playing in the stream. It's not that he test-plays maps before the streams, he just saw this wad with a huge filesize and checked it out, just no-clipping around for a couple of minutes.

1) Learn basic decorate, you don't need ZScript or ACS because it's too hard anyway. Don't learn it too deep because you're just going to steal everything anyway.

2) Learn how to steal assets. You need to know how to use russian torrent websites to steal Unity assets, so you get them for free. And you need a md3 converter for blender, so you get 3d models conveted to md3 GZDoom format.

3) Learn how to make shiny PBR materials in photoshop and programs like EasyBump. There are many online generators. You need to read about PBR in Zdoom wiki so you know which folders to place generated images.

4) You need to learn how to use Oblige map generator. Once you learned it you can generate your levels, however they will look crap so you will need to download GZDoom Builder to edit those maps, for example you will need to put dynamic lights sources so your shiny pbr materials will be visible. More PBR materials, more hires stuff = better mod.

5) Your mod should look as cool as Total Chaos or Doom Slayer Chronicles. This doesn't mean you need any talent. This means your mod should be as shiny as those. So you need to have as much hires stuff, PBR stuff and dynamic lights. You don't need even to create maps, just generate them with Oblige and add dynamic lights. The more shiny it will be the more chances it will be popular on moddb. Moddb is the main website for mods, all other websites are just crap. If your mod is popular on moddb, it means it is good and successful.

1. I have some experience in map making, mostly BUILD and early Unreal. What's Zscript or ACS based on?
2. I'd rather not steal other assets, cool as all these textures and sprites are, we have seen them a million times.
3. PBR in a Doom mod? My specialty is NPR anyway and I have some 20-odd years experience with 2D/3D, so I'm confident enough to make original assets.

5. I have to look these up. Or is that another joke? Dynamic lighting is fine with me, also normal/spec maps can look nice on low res textures, but I don't want to do anything with hideous 3D models, never looked good in Doom mods IMO.

You can still use 3d and hires stuff and then convert it to sprites and lowres textures so it will look unique. On russian torrent websites like rutracker there are tons of this kind of assets which you can pirate.

ACS is like lobotomized C, created by Raven for Hexen's map scripting. It's since been extended far beyond its original scope, to the point where it can be useful for all sorts of effects and systems. You probably won't need it when you're starting out, though, so don't worry about it too much. ZScript is more or less the successor to DECORATE and is mostly written in the same way with just a few tweaks. It can do a lot more than DECORATE ever could, and without all the ridiculous hacks that DECORATE used to rely on.

Something along those lines.
He's admitted that this was a mistake, and he should have allowed for more experimenting and exploring more options.
He realizes that it was a bad call, and that it really killed one of Doom's original selling points, speed.

Something similar likely would have happened to the Playstation port too, if Carmack hadn't been out of town, John Romero looking at it and probably saying something like "Dude, that looks like totally gnarly, let's publish it!"
Romero probably recognized the shortcomings, but was willing to compromise due to it being a very good package overall.

Absolute most of them are uncapable of understanding what makes any game good, and in what ways old games are better than new ones.
They only see a trend and mindlessly copy what they think fits in that trend.
Main problem is: they are somewhat successful because their hipster audience suffers from same inabilities as they are.
Project Warlock is a testament to that.

Only those who can not only understand what makes old games good, but also bring that forth in a different game without ruining the formula will succeed. Unfortunately those are very rare.
DUSK barely makes it, it still misses a few points.
Amid Evil looks like that can be it.
What we have from Ion Maiden can not be indicative of the final product, as they have plenty of chances to fuck it up further down the line.

Any weapon mods similar to Faspons and Weapons of Saturn?

I really like them both for a sort of Vanilla+ feel, but I don't like a couple of details from each.

Also, is there a way to make Faspons be 100% a weapon mod? Because even when I tick YES on vanilla monsters and NO on faster projectiles, I still feel like the monsters aren't quite acting normally.

every major (and most minor) FPS reviewer made a vid/article about it, giving it a raving review, often overlooking its problems
The game is said to take after Heretic and Hexen, but the level layouts are completely flat, with exception of few elevators, that just take you to another completely flat section, and it's all on a square grid (because that's how Hexen was, right?).
Extreme darkness. IDK if they fixed it yet, but during the creation of the levels (it's Unity3D btw) the skybox was made as a prop set up around level and it blocks global lighting, which on highest graphical setting makes it drop a global dark shadow over everything.
The enemies and their animations may be nice and all, but they have no rotations so there's total like 12-16 frames per enemy (because old shooters were supposed to be like that, right?).
Levels are extremely samey and boring, with about 4-6 unique wall textures per episode and 2-3 themed props.
No balance at all. Game has upgrade system for guns, but upgrading even one of them makes the game a total cakewalk even on highest difficulty.
Lives system (because old games need to have those right?), with highest difficulty giving you one and having you restart the game if you die (ironmanning is good right?). Even if that death was caused by you spontaneously falling through the floor/wall which happens sometimes.
Basically put it is plagued by all the telltale signs of "We want to make retro but we aren't quite sure what that means".

Then you have that Aardwolf pushwall maze in one level, which completely fucks statistics in the side because there's like one hundred secrets in there alone, and you just cannot grab all of them, meaning you can never score 100% secrets in that map, even grabbing all the normal secrets outside it, you only get credit for like 27%, barely more if you try your hand at an optimal path.

OK, I watched the Sigil videos in Romero's Twitch stream, and learnt a couple things about the maps:

1. Every map will have a red skull key in a cage, usually hanging in the air (with a Baron guarding it preferably). This gives a nice and fresh touch of episode character.

2. Evil eye sprites will be shootable (the walls behind them), sometimes even opening mandatory areas. Another fresh and interesting touch.

3. Romero's clearly obsessed with zigzags by now. It was part of his previous modern maps, and he won't abandon the idea. The ceiling aligned, flashing zigzags on the trailer map was the most spectacular one.

4. He will clearly build this map in the same way he built his D2 and E4 levels, as it will use extensive number of catwalk areas and harmful areas below. This kind of playtype was abandoned long ago, but it's interesting. Instead of beating hordes of enemies, your job is to maneuvre well in the ledges, and find out the layout and even secrets to advance to the next level.

No matter what the detractors say, this will be an awesome mapset we will play religiously for years.

All the gimmicks, except for 4, are superficialities, are all about the looks rather than genuinely mixing gameplay up. 4 is geared specifically to fuck up those who move using mouse ("horizontal mouselook"), like Romero does, and the danger is greatly reduced by controlling your character from keyboard, and, naturally, minding your step too.

You can play it keyboard only (and the base game is mostly easy enough that this is viable), but it was designed with using a keyboard and mouse in mind, you can see this in the included demo recordings, and there's video footage of John Romero testing the game during development using a mouse for turning, further even the Wolfenstein 3D manual suggested you use a mouse for turning.

The idea that Doom was designed for keyboard only comes from the fact that people with weak 386 computers didn't have enough memory to run both Doom and their mouse drivers at the same time.
Someone with a good 486 computer, with memory to spare, could enjoy the game As The Developers Intended (TM), and you will find that there's settings for a mouse in all versions of Doom on home computers.

Unless you're playing to challenge yourself, or you prefer a gamepad or joystick, there's no good reason to not use a mouse when you play.

The first two Sigil levels were basically revealed in the videos. One starts at the back of two shotgunners, a typical Romero trademark. The level looks like something that can be beaten in 3 minutes. The other is a relativeiy ugly map with some wooden room start and shooting the eye opens some exteriors. Also looks like a 5 minute map at most, well, not sure if the level ends after the red door.

I hope the other 7 will be better. What I saw, later maps had better leveldesign and hopefully they are larger than just a few rooms put together.

...and this doesn't really work. Using the latest stable GZDoom under Linux and trying to run the exe via wine (which crashes), GZDoom complains loudly about a bunch of non-conforming scripting. Wrong premise, as I ended up avoiding my config on the second test, but it led me to a workable answer. Looking closer at the supplied gzdoom.ini, I saw that it itself autoloads a ton of stuff. If I play purely with the supplied INI and manually load nothing but the Doom 2 levels, then the entire thing is playable and the looks are massively improved. The targets flip and make pling noises when you hit them. I spent like an entire day making them and I had no play beyond "Hey, that'd be kind of neat."
They have numbers painted on them, ostensibly for score, but there's no scoring system attached. There's also no difference in hits or anything, so they only like flip to the left briefly before flipping back, and that's it.

for reference, on the same doors, every other geometry destruction method except the thunderbuster and non-berserk kicks work much faster and more reliably than the chainsaw. chainsaw's advantages lie mainly in resource efficiency and user safety. cells are much easier to come across than HEATs, brontornis bolts, or berserk packs, and just one lasts long enough to cut through several doors. chainsaw can't destroy bigger walls as easily as the other methods and particularly struggles with thickness, but you can use it to safely break walls that are too close to use an explosive on.

I've had the following idea, somewhat similar in a sense:
A shrapnel launcher for a shotgun slot, lauches pellets by a gauss magnetic coil principle
The first stage of charge takes same time as regular shotgun pump, you can fire as fast or that.
OR you can wait a bit and let the coils charge further making next shot be more powerful, up to SSG level, as well as being able to shoot somewhere in-between for a middle ground level of power.
