This game was actually designed to meet the demand of a 3d Sonic game after Mario 64 except the Saturn didn’t handle polygons very well. The actual 3D game, Sonic x-treme, was never released but even then it was basically just Bug and nowhere near Mario 64 in terms of 3D gameplay

After sonic 1 the franchise was effectively handed over to sega of america which did fine. It was only leading up to and around the launch of the saturn that the japs dropped the ball and Yuji Naka being butthurt that nobody liked Nights and the time and still doesn't.
